I was trying to find unseen images of the Korean War and I saw a picture of one of these where you can only see its mouth open and no engines and I thought to my self wow is this in the right time period... What little did I know.
It was 1965 at Pope AFB, I was driving a line truck in heavy morning fog when all of a sudden I found myself under a giant wing! Holy crap I was headed straight for the main gear, only quick reflexes saved my butt. That was my only encounter with an "Old Shakey".
When we were at Bovingdon in the late 1940''s early 50's, there were quite a few C-124's based there. At that time it was the largest cargo plane flying.
My Dad travelled on one of these aircraft in 1961. He was in the irish army and went overseas to serve in the Congo with the U.N. They stopped at a U.S base in Tripoli in Libya and flew over the Sahara to the Congo. They were issued with a cynide tablet incase the plane went down over the desert.
Isn't that plane like long lost and forgotten about? I never knew that it for sure existed at all.. I have one on Flight Sim X and I didn't know, "Does it exist?" So thanks for posting this video!
I was stationed at Hickam AFB, Hawaii and pulled maintenance on C-124's and C-118's. Looking at previous posts, I see that that clip was from and old TV series. I've been looking for a sound clip of "Old Shakey" for years. There was a brief clip in the movie "Strategic Air Command" but it was ever so brief. I have lots of memories of those days and quite a few still pictures if you're interested. Reply via email if you are.
@C124MaunaKeaBill I was also on C-124's in the 1502 FMS 64&65.Had to transfer on a Humanitarian to Robins AFB in 65. First worked on these in the 62nd FMS at Larson AFB in 56-58. msborn38
He would be pretty well beat up by then from being drug and bounced down the runway behind the aircraft and most likely dead by then, plus it wouldn't be as dramatic.
Its so sad none of these are flying in the air show circuit. last flight was in 1986 and it became a museum piece, how tragic.

@WindowsAndMacintosh There is a flight simulator that includes this plane? Would love to have it. I worked on and flew in these planes. Thanks.

I once flew across the Atlantic (with a stop in the Azores of course) in one of these and nothing broke! Imagine that.

I guess it should be easier if the soldiers pull him back to the plane.

Cool footage. Ugly plane (I know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder).

The Queen of the Skiesin her day. She never passed a bar and was guaranteed to break down in Bangkok and Taipei until the crew ran out of money.
