I have a copy of "A soldier on the shelf" dated 13 Nov 1930, but mine is a TEST RECORD, C. G. Co., Ltd written in ink, it only has one side, No. WA 1087H-1, also has a red lable on the sleeve TESTING DEPT COLAS HOUSE,
This is superb! I just found a copy of the same song on a splendid Piccadilly from 1930, by Jock McDermott and his New Carlton Players - in the mail currently, but I hope to upload it soon! It's credited with "vocal refrain" on the label but no clue as to who the vocalist is.
You are lucky as the Jock McDermott 78s i have are excellant, and yours should have that 1930 sound!Ps i have some quotes from a 1931 music reviewer about Billy Cotton recordings, very complimentary, and will add shortly.
Thank you for your quick comment; on this moment buffering a video for viewing is so slow it takes me ten minutes instead of the normal 30 seconds - awful. Apparently the server is nearly collapsing under massive requests

I think its Dan Donavon, who seemed to be the bands main Vocalist. The vocal is lovely i agree.Jack Hylton did a great version of this too.
