i've been playing the recorder on and off for a number of years and i definitely can't play this! I wish i could though! i'm really just a beginner on the recorder... i can play three pieces perfectly... Ode to Joy, Amazing Grace and Lord of the Dance) anything else i would really have to work hard at... i've been determined to learn Flight of the Bumblebee on any instrument since i heard it for the first time when i was 15!

@thereseherdler Actually I see what you mean by his fingerings being off, but I think what he was doing was holding out certain notes, but was manipulating the recorder by changing the way he was breathing into it causing it to sound like two different notes even though it's just one note...... That and he screws up somewhere around the 1 minute mark.

This song is *really* difficult on recorder, since it's fingering system doesn't really favor chromatic playing. It's possible, but much easier on more modern instruments.

@yuvalhuri2 This is untrue. You can play a complete chromatic scale (semi-tones all the way) for the entire range of the recorder. There are also more avant-garde fingerings for playing polytones.

Plus there's something called circular breathing, which is breathing and blowing at the same time. So even if he wasn't taking breaths, he could still be breathing.

@zhs2009 There are plenty of professional recorder players, but they are not common, partly because the instrument is not taught in many conservatories. You can study recorder in the conservatory at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and some other fine music programs, especially those with an excellent early music program.
