One of those performances that either makes me want to practice cello every single day for the rest of my life (so I can play like this) or never play again (knowing that I'll never be half this good!).
What a masterful cellist!!! Piatigorsky always plays with great elan, dazzling technique and a gorgeous sound. He is the consummate performer with a bigger than life musical personality. Never a dull moment and impeccable taste.
Also, take a look at Piatigorsky playing the allegro appassionato -- 1:35 in that one is another example of an incredible string of effortless downbows
P.S. I also just found his autobiography online, which was a lot of fun to read. If you're interested, you can find it if you google Piatigorsky Cellist.
What a wonderful video for studying the great man's technique. There's such mastery and control, and yet such fluidity and ease. Surely the most beautiful technique of all to watch, and what a sound it produces! Quite remarkable.
What a bowing??!!!! :-0 what a amazing coordination of both hands!!??? everything is so clear!! i can't stop opening my mouth!!! this man is another dimension!!
What 99% of string players can learn from Piatigorsky is how to create a straight path from the musical intention, through the bow, into sound. With most people, there is a block somewhere so the music expression from the bow comes out rather without expression. Is this us? Well, we can all be careful!
Look up Perenyi's video of the Arpeggione sonata. His fingerings are astounding. They are strange, use LOTS of fourth finger, and upper G and C strings, but work perfectly. Just thinking them up required some serious thought. What an amazing player he is. Gregor is amazing, no doubt, but watch that Arpeggione
It's the Batta, Piatigorsky's cello of choice for concerts and recordings from about 1948 until his death, although he also used the Baudiot (which he owned before the Batta) on occasion.
There is a lovely freedom about his playing. An incredibly free bow arm. Thanks very much for showing all these lovely Piatigorsky videos. He was an incredible cellist.
You are welcome. I confess that I am not an avid listener of cello (mostly violin) but I certainly do enjoy a good cellist when I hear one. Seeing one is always a treat and I am glad you enjoyed it too.
Glad you enjoy it! You are just lucky that I happen to own a few violin DVDs that feature Piatigorsky, otherwise I probably wouldn't have been able to post these in the first place.
thank you very much!

This is a nervous twitch. Try to pull the bow and stop it and pull and stop it with a nervous action.

Well, one thing is for sure. This takes lots of practice and devotion. What intonation also! You have to know what to hear. Not all can do that!

piatigorsky is the only cellist other than feuermann i've ever seen with a legitimate down-bow stacatto bowing.

I've been informed that Piatigorsky didn't actually buy the Batta until 1956. Therefore, this might be either the Baudiot or the Montagnana.
