Stewkey is one of my favorite people. I'm from Philly and I have friends that are in a new version of The Nazz. Everyone thinks that todd did this by himself,he did not. Stewkey was and is a big part of this.
@shinyaeh77 Ah, thanks for pointing me to that excellent Buzzcocks song. I agree my friend, the tunes are remeniscent of each other in tones and feel.
Being from Philly, Nazz were just one of a number of outstanding bands back in the day. We had Mandrake Memorial, American Dream, Good G-D, Sweet Stavin Chain, Elizabeth and don't forget Good News with Michael Bacon (now performing with his brother Kevin), and many more.
Listen to 'Under the Ice" then "I'll be with you tonight" from Cheap Trick
Not the same song, just the same guitar line...
Rick Nielsen and Todd Rundgren were closed friends. Todd produced one Cheap Trick album. And Rick replaced Todd in Nazz Nazz and took the stage with them during some months around 1969.
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll. Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll
In l8r yrs Todd tended to play everything on albums. He was an egotist, and a recording technique snob. Which, in these cases, (for us) was a good thing. I wouldn't be surprised to learn he played drums on this cut.
@bongeoz01 No Tom is playing drums on this track for sure....but Todd did sing most of the tracks on Nazz Nazz and the producer had Stewkey sing them over and erase Todd (they only had so many tracks in them days and they were all usedl) Todd didn't like that at all and that was the beginning of the end for Nazz !!!!!
@2cexplorer Actually, there were more RED vinyls made than black. So if you have an original 1969 version of this with black vinyl, you have a collector's item.
the Nazz could be one tough sounding band...seems like they had this "flash" guitarist by the name of Todd Rundgren...fell offstage in El Paso, broke bones, and kept on playing...
I was lucky enough to see Nazz live in '68 at the Cafe Au Go Go in the Village. Had to be one of the most kick-ass shows I can remember. Todd in a bright pink jump-suit. This song was the climax of the set!
I recall from the liner notes of an 80s era best of the Nazz LP (one of those Rhino compilations), that this song was influenced by "Jumping Jack Flash."
@BritIronRebel He didn't particularly have a good childhood, and got the hell outta there as soon as he was 18! (I don't think the PLACE itself was disliked by him though.)
being from Philadelphia, we always loved these guys. todd rundgren stated in a local philly band called woodys truck stop about 1967, when rock started taking off here. he loved all things british, notice their attire, when most american rockers were wearing blue jeans. this song really kicks ass, in my humble opion in their top three.
Totally, totally agree phillyfirst. The first song that pops into my mind if I hear the name NAZZ is UnderThe Ice. I remember the first time I ever heard it. It was a at a friends house and he plopped a headset over my ears and said " listen to this " and cranked it. I was floored.
Woa -where did you sse this .Had this recording in 69/70 and tore it up,The orig. red vinyl.. He is great on the whole record...really admired his drumming then & now ... Heard he married RITA COOLIDGE...?
Thom Mooney's drumming is phenomenal! I've encountered him recently playing with a bar band and the guy is still unbelievably, untouchably talented! Why the hell hasn't someone scooped him up!!!?????!!!
@cttxlv yeah...meridian leeward and under the ice really caught me attention. i'm 53.i haven't heard this stuff since about 1970!!! boy, it sure take ya back, don't it!!
Well shit, how old am I, remember Todd Rundgren from way back then, crap I feel old!!!

stupendous. the nazz were one of my faves as a 12 year old kid. they still are now. love that maniac behind the drums.

The 50,000 copies were red, however there were more red than black copies pressed so the black ones are rare.

Si el LP era de vinilo rojo.
Súper loco para esos años y su rock era diferente a los que sonaban en ese tiempo.
Si Nazz hubiese tenido la tecnología de hoy, sonarían como dioses.

A seminal tune from the 60's. This along with "Open my Eyes" perked sharp ears of kids like me.. 15 at the time, 52 now.
