  • Someone should find the full video of this performance of 'Poème'. I would give a lot to see it.

  • @karlc1980 So would I!!!

  • Ich bin sprachlos. ich kannte Sein Spiel . Es ist nicht ztu fassen!!!

  • There were arguably never any better than PH.

  • Greatest violinist arguably-of all time.

  • So appreciative of you sharing this--what a beautiful testimony to his playing

  • Philippe Hirshhorn is one of the greatest tragedies in the classical music world.

  • Why,what happened to Hirshhorn??Why doesn't he play anymore?

  • Because he died during the 90's :(

  • @jasonform He died in 1996....

  • nice pool,mischa :)

  • Let me comment maisky's words about perfection.I dont agree with him when he says perfection is 'unreachable',i simply believe that there's no such thing, indeed that it MAKES NO SENSE-neither logical nor semantic.Running 100 mts can get 'perfect':supposing one reaches the speed of light. But in Art and music interpretation there are too many variables-and most of them are subjective

  • profound statement. thank you for this reminder (which I think we all know but often forget).

  • I'm very glad to watch a performance of Philippe Hirshhorn for the first time. He suppressed Stoika Milanova and Gidon Kremer and won the 1st place in 1967 Elisabeth Concours. Karajan planned costarring with Philippe, but Philippe canceled it. Yuko Shiokawa (later she married Andras Schiff) played Brahms's Violin Concerto in place of him. Japanese Conductor Hiroyuki Iwaki (1932-2006) conduct with Philippe on this video.

  • I've read many comments about how violinists play and how they are compared with notable violinist like Heifetz. In my opinion, there shouldn't be any comparison at all among violinist. However, if you still want to compare styles, I would say that it's better to leave Heifetz where he is, and start making comparisons newer and higher standards, for example, L. Kavakos. In my opinion, Kavakos surpasses Heifetz's technique in many ways. But as I said before. This is only a matter of abstraction.

  • Agree. would i sound predictable if i said there should be a couple of names placed a tiny bit higher than heifetz in the olympus of the violin ? ....such as.. the 'mighty' KOGAN

  • i thought it was just me.

  • wow. Never heard of this guy. Wow marvelous string sound and it is individual . wonderful musicality and characyter abound!

  • At 3:01 it sounded like he said that Phillipe had some problem with Smurfs. I too had problem with Smurfs. It was a horrible show...what? What's that? Oh...sorry.. My wife just told me that it isn't a problem with Smurfs... It is a problem with nerves! Sorry... My bad!

  • nervs

  • What is that one word mischa maisky is saying at 3:01? "I think phillip probably had some problem with ________."

  • "... some problems with nerves."

  • "...some problems with nurse." not nerves! Listen with the speakers turned up

  • Nope. It's "nerves." That's it!

  • Wow, his hair's so short!!!!!!!(in comparrison to what's like now)

  • What a wonderful clip of this great violinist, thank you!

  • Mischa Maisky!

  • Philippe Hirshhorn is one the best but underrated violinist I've seen and heard. Unfortunately, we did not hear much from him, in terms of recordings. I heard that he was a perfectionist. He didn't think that he was good enough. Footages of his performances are very hard to find indeed. So this video clip is a TREAT. Thank you for posting. This is very much appreciated. If you have more from this documentary, I would appreciate if you could post more of this on YouTube. Thanks again.
