  • turning off the internet/phones is a dictator tactic right? thats what the BART did when people protested in san franciso, sorry for the double post

  • The amount of prisoners in egypt is also miniscule compared to the percentage of the american population that has been locked up, thus losing their right to vote

  • So, as I have learned:

    To become a sucessful dictator:

    1. Don't let food prices rise

    2. Don't invade Russia. Or England.

  • i wish john was consuming toilet paper during this politcal discussion..

  • Are there any, you know GOOD dictators? I mean, not good as in interesting, but good as in good? We never seem to hear about them.

  • @cocaotheobromida Hm. I imagine so, but there aren't very many in the modern world. Most of the people who are dictators these days became so by disregarding proper constitutional laws, and they're more concerned with keeping their scraps of power than being a good ruler. While there are people who would be good as absolute rulers, they generally have moral scruples that prevent them from become so. Just my thoughts.

  • @cocaotheobromida Well I suppose it's relative, for example some people would call Vladimir Putin a dictator

  • @cocaotheobromida Well, you could SORT OF say that about Bhutan and their King, even though it's not really that true anymore. Bhutan was an absolute monarchy until not long ago and the people love the guy. Now, get this, the man actually lowered HIS OWN power and gave the people the right the vote. And that's not all! The people didn't want that! They actually preferred staying an absolute monarchy, but the King wanted to modernize a bit. Good (former) dictator? I'll say!

  • I'm busy imagining the world where Hank Green is a dictator.

I can't decide whether this is awesome, or terrifying.

  • @mcbTelcontar It will be awesomely terrifying.

  • hey could u please make a video about the revolution in Syria ? things are getting pretty rough there!!

  • Lewis or Louis? I guess Lewis right? Lewis the puppy sized elephant. How jolly.

  • This was my first Vlogbrothers video as well...

  • Revolution is (relatively) easy. It's rebuilding afterwards that is difficult.

  • 3:30 :)

  • idk about you but it always seems like in the middle eastern revolution pictures the people are always dressed in very stylish clothes lol

  • I love how your face gets all angelic and innocent when you talk about puppy-sized elephants and/or Henry. :P

  • IMRAN HOSEIN

    IMRAN HOSEIN

    IMRAN HOSEIN

    IMRAN HOSEIN

    IMRAN HOSEIN

  • Anwar Sadat is my third cousin, once removed. I was surprised too.

  • My mother was in Egypt when this happened. She moved out of her apartment complex... two days before it was burnt to a crisp. God she was lucky!!!

  • this is the first vlogbrothers video i ever saw. my political science teacher showed it in class.

  • yes, that new and shiny thing is libya

  • The Puppet of Israel has now been brought down to its kness thanks to the Revolution

  • @nfltank55 Idiot. Write correctly.

  • great video!!

  • finally someone posts a tut on? this, thanks

  • Go Egypt :D

  • I subbed xD

  • really? nice info

  • Great job on the video!

  • I subscribed and I liked and Favorited this video! :D

  • i was there in the black white and read all over, someone asked about it!

  • ok now this is funny, the ad that is on to the right is "Muslim Girls" Meet free. AHHHH ROFL

  • I don't think the phrase "it's not paranoia if they're really out to get you" has ever seemed more appropriate. Five assassination attempts? I'd be pretty paranoid too.

  • i'm a Proud Egyptian and i hope Egypt get through this and move up to the next step build our country)

  • The very moment you blanked out while talking about puppy-sized elephants, I happened to look over at my printer. There, I saw a stuffed elephant -- a puppy-sized stuffed elephant.

  • You remind me so much of my friend. She is a major history nerd and loves revolutions

  • It is better for food prices to go up so high that the city people start to pack up and go back to the land to the source of food, and learn to live with nature without stealing from nature as they do by building these artificial unsustainable habitations called cities. Cities are proven to become extinct anyways in just a few decades as they will suck dry all the water, because cities are unsustainable, unnatural, the first city was created by Cain, the first killer.

  • At 2:17 the guy in the video says "If you ever become a dictator keep your eye on the price of food". All these lazy bastards living in cities wasting all the resources of the Earth without giving anything back to those who provide the food to sustain their parasitic blood-sucking existence but poverty. It is people in the cities who rob from those who produce all the food and degrade the country people, the farm laborers as illiterate, too simple, too honest, too traditional too family-oriented

  • I'm an american and I lived there from July to january when the revolution got read bad, I witnessed everything:3

  • I learned more in four minutes of John talking about this than I did watching the half-hour news stories.

  • i'd like an egypt update...

  • the word shiny was misspelled like three or four times in the caption thingies. Just a random thing I noticed.

  • I know this is off topic because it's not about Egypt. I was at the event in the beginning. After almost five long years, I am finally in a vlogbrothers video... I know this isn't a big deal like revolution in Egypt, but it means a lot to me.

    DFTBA

  • i will name him lewis and teach him to poop outside and he and willy will play together in the snow and it will be so beau - WERE WE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING?

  • You said that we should pay attention to Egypt even when it isn't shiny and new. So whats going on with the oil spill? It's not shiny or new anymore, so we don't here about it. Just because it isn't a recent event, doesn't mean it's not important. I request that you talk about it, and educate your readers on what they deserve to know about what happened afterward. Most people probably have no clue. Is it safe to go in the water? Where is the oil? When will the problem be solved?

  • The latest events in Egypt called for Great Britain and United States to resort to their infallible method. The one they always use when it comes to escalation of violence in different countries, whenever they want to wreak the havoc. And it happened. Snipers are in action again.

    /watch?v=TVcYZCa27EY

  • The real question is, will there be enough of an uproar by the citizenry if the same thing happens here (the turning off the internet, that is)?

  • I know that it is late and that you have already done your question friday but... I have been studying the golden ratio and can't quite get the hang of how it works. I think that it would be cool if you could do a video with that math friend of yours who helped you write "An Abundance of Katherines." Just a thought.

    DFTBA

  • maybe a video on Libia's situation... compared to Egypt's, it's kind of a lot more of a crisis!

  • Stop Iraq and Afghanistan occupations

  • This 4 minute video is so much better than the half hour assembly I had to sit through at school.

  • So we were hoping for the invention of puppy-sized elephants and instead we got the situation in Libya.

  • baby's crying, im confused & jumping around in the time line I suppose, didnt know you had kids..or a wife? Babies would drive me just banana's right now, I have a clear head on my shoulders but I feel im carrying the wt of The World at Times where do people go to talk about things and stuff like that these days?

  • How many Nerdfighters are old enough to remember when a map of the Middle East showed the entire Sinai Peninsula as being under Israeli control?

  • EGYPT CRASH COURSE

  • Your video seriously helped me write my school newspaper article on Egypt. Thanks!

  • insta like for puppy sized elephants.. named louis.

  • John's explanatory videos (like this one) have helped me immensely. I thought I'd contribute to the Youtube community in a similar way - try to spread knowledge and awareness through the site.

If your curious about the goings-on in Wisconsin right now (major protests and missing senators), check out my account. The videos aren't as succinct as John's but I think they are useful. This is an issue that will affect many other states, so awareness is vital.

  • kkkkkkkkk?????????????????????// mind blown

  • I want Puppy-sized elephants!

  • John, I live in Wisconsin and everyone is talking about Governor Walker's anti-union bill! In fact some students at my high school are organizing walk outs! It would be awesome if I knew what was going on. Can you make a video about the situation in Madison?

  • WHO IS HANK !

  • @TheNorah1995 Hank is a collection of books, movies, and music that the Congress of the Untied States has deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."

  • @samov222 Hi. Has your brain been switched for Hitler's?

  • @KINDspotting What the hick are you talking about?!!! If you do not want to believe certain facts, then this is your problem.

Search the backgrounds of politicians and main media people in the US, and you will be surprised to know how many of them are Jewish, and are steering US foreign policy according to the Israeli agenda.

And, if you are Jewish do not try to use the Hitler/Holocaust card to get sympathy.

  • @samov222 I am not Jewish, but I have two Jewish friends. If want to have a problem with Jews in the US government, then, well, whatever.

  • Why does he keep saying Hank

  • @wildcatproduction cause his name is john. His brother is hank.

  • @wildcatproduction

because when they originally started making videos on youtube, it wasfor the brothers to communicate with each other without using the phone. The videos were sent to each other so now it's to each other and their viewers.

  • Why can't news just be like this? Then I would understand and it would be less depressing to watch

  • Every time you said "Shiny" I couldn't help but think of Firefly...

But a wonderful video, it must be said. You're always so well-informed.

  • ARABS ARE ANIMALS Just look at these ANIMALS !!! poor Lara LOGAN !!! They are ANIMALS and uncivilized... YOU CAN NEVER establish a civil society in ARAB countires ITS like TEACHING APES MATHS !!!

  • WOW!! alot of infor fast.

  • I sent this to my World History teacher and we watched it today in class.... He also asked why you never blinked.

  • Thank you.

  • Pretty sure the Russian Revolution did a good job...

  • Look a this video, it's really cool... someone wrote a song about what was happening in Egypt.

  • John,

This is incredibly hopeful, but I would love it if you could make a video on the Weimar government introduced in Germany after WWI.

Why did Germany's attempt at democracy fail? I think this is particularly relevant as Egypt tries to install their own democracy, and none of us want it to lead into fascism and war and autocracy all over again like what happened in Germany.

  • @joshinho9 Part of the reason that the democracy in Germany failed was that it wasn't very good at doing much of anything. The economy tanked under its rule, and it was really unstable. They elected new leaders almost once a year. Also, when Hitler came along he didn't tell anyone he was going to eliminate the democracy, The Germans didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

  • Did you try styling your hair for this video? It looks good.

  • it ended quite well thank you John =) proud to be an Egyptian...now!

we are all focused now on re-building what's been destroyed in the past few days, everyone is shouting in "El Tahrir" square now that they wil clean it up an go home, it's been a very civilized revolution, we will build our country again and hopefully everything will turn out ok at th end.

we have a voice now and everything!! =D

  • HAPPY MUBARAK-STEPS-DOWN DAY!!!!!!!

  • He has resigned! :)

  • John, PLEASE make another video on Egypt's current situation. As you may have heard, Hosni Mubarak has resigned! And now Egypt's military council is currently in control of Egypt's government. Any thoughts?

  • My history teacher had us watch 20 minutes of the live feed this morning and you most definitely need to make an updated video.

The president resigned! And there's a full out revolt with fire and pillaging and everything. It's madness!

  • @randomeese then they could become one by watching john and han's videos

  • On a less related note, there are pygmy elephants in Borneo. Not quite puppy sized, but still.

  • Thank you John

This helped a lot with my current events for history <3

    dftba

  • Egypt was nice. Until it wasn't.

  • Due to Mubarak's recent (like ten minutes ago) announcement, I believe you should make another one about the current current political situation in Egypt.

  • is it true that the revolution started on facebook, part of the reason Mubarik shut down the internet? thats what my english teacher said

  • @journeytoyesterday actually it did! =) on facebook to be precise! it's kindda funny, but the youth of Egypt started this revolution and that's how we all communicate.

  • I was wondering if you could talk about what Obama is doing? I've heard a lot about police states and how there are going to be riots in DC soon. I'm not sure any of this is accurate. I just want to know Whats going on.

  • ha my name is Anuar :D

  • I find it rather interesting that Tunisians were the ones who started this wave of revolutions, but they seem to be forgotten. You mentioned them, but didn't say what is going on there right now? I know Egypt is more important to American interests, but that shouldn't be the deciding factor. Also, you might mention that the protests are spreading (slowly) to Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Yemen. Of course, they're not full blown revolutions, but they might grow into ones.

  • Dear John, You remind me of Mr. Peabody from Rocky and Bullwinkle.

    - DFTBA

    :)

  • I'm using this to help write a paper for Social Studies...Thank you John Green!

  • great vid! thanks for sharing!

  • Nice spoof on Finding Nemo :)

  • ipods == revolution

  • My parents dont like it when *I* revolt...

  • The French revolution was pretty inspiring...till they got carried away with the whole "decapitate anyone who's against us" thing. Hopefully it won't end the same way for Egypt.

  • Reminds me of Catching Fire!

  • Egypt may have had puppy sized elephants for you!... look tetrapd zoology on science blogs for egyptian pygmy mammoths!

  • I was wondering if you knew where I could get this information from?

  • @shad0w12346 I know, but 'tis a traditional question Tuesday question.

  • "Oh, you have a dog?"

"Yeah his name is Anwar Sadat."

    "What?"

"Anwar Sadat, the former president of Egypt."

"...Because you're a fan of his policies?"

"No, because he looks exactly like him!"

  • you realy should include something about the Muslim Brotherhood...

  • That tangent about puppy sized elephants reminded me of Wheezy Waiter...

  • @Thespiangoddess yes, there are 3 feet in 1 yard.

  • Comment removed

  • my partner got shot in this protest, while playing a part in the army. this video meant a lot to me because you've made me laugh about it, thank you :) keep the videos coming. p.s. he's alive :)

  • hey off topic but im doing math home worke and 3 ft. are in one yard right? i would much love some help like soon DFTBA

  • @freaksrule1 thank you SO much!! i really, really appreciate it :)

  • also a eygyptians democracy is a voteing booth which you walk into and it locks u in it and soem dudes there witha gun and says vote morabarhabajujubi

  • hes liek a angery father NO MORE TV FOR YOU NO MORE INTERNET NO MORE MOBILE DONT MAKE ME SEND YOU TO IRAQ without supplies >:}O

  • What is happening in Egypt is kinda what happened in Portugal in 25th April 1974, (a.k.a. THE 25th of April) Where we lived in dictatorship, with high censorship in everything that was commercialized (music etc.) and secret police and stuff, before that day.

And like Egypt our army came to the streets but Joined us instead and made peace. Not a single shot was made (only to the sky) and no blood was shed! instead, they put a flower called "Cravo" on the guns, it was a very meaningful gesture

  • @RMMFX Sad most people are oblivious to this revolution, and compare to France instead

  • What's a good Valentine's Day gift to give someone you like and who likes you but you aren't "official" yet? While I can not confirm they are a nerdfighter, they are definitely a nerd so I felt you could help me with this XD

  • hank u rock:D good explanation :D

  • John, what advice would you give to a beginning author?

  • I don't see the shine. I see people fighting and I really hope it isn't in vain.

  • Isn't Egypt considered part of the middle east even though its technically apart of africa

  • @darkraven1414 the middle east is just a region. Africa an Asia are the continents.

  • You just help me do my homework for my Intro to politics class. Thank you!

  • THANK YOU!! I have been trying to explain this to my 15y/o and just couldn't find the right way to say it but she GOT this. You have a way of breaking it down just right. And *side not* I will be next inline to get my baby boy a mini elephant!! how cute is that idea!!

  • is there a way to contact you for either complicated questions or ones that may contain spoilers?

  • Got bored but your puppy sized elephants reeled me back in.

  • hes been a friend to the west, and everyone who wants to take control wants to kill all the jews, i support mubarak. Because everyone else hates the jews.

  • @deltaofwar Elbaradei doesn't, and he's the guy they want instead.

  • thts not true.. most egyptiansdont want Elbaradei and especially after the january 25th revolution and the extremely ovious decieving way he was speaking!

  • @areeg1021 Okay. In that case I retract my last statement.

  • "That's not French?" lol

  • Do you have to research this stuff or do you just pull it from the super-smart national-revolution compartment of your incomprehensibly extensive brain?

  • My teacher showed this to us during class because of all that information you gave us on Egypt and what is currently going on :)

  • Yeah, thanks for covering this, I had no idea what was actually happening. Every time I turn on the TV they're talking about how US Reporters are being attacked and that's about it.

  • i sent the link to this video to my history teacher because we are studying the French Revolution and she mentioned the Egyptian one a few times. (and she showed john's French Revolution summary video. so i told her if i found anymore good Nerdfighter videos that were subject/class appropriate, I'd let her know)

  • i read that there is more than what it seems to be. their want for democracy may be what everyone sees is on the surface. if a new anti-american politics comes in and act uncooperative toward the use of the suez canal to transport oil to america and the world, oil prices go up and dollar, the only currency to trade oil from the middle east countries, goes up also, which may be what america wants at its economic crisis and dollar weakness.

  • John. When you intend to end the video at 4 minutes and finish it at 3:59, you do not get to say "Wow i got it exactly". You were 1 second early

  • i emailed this to my Social Studies teacher and he showed it for the class!

  • "Revolution does not have a particularly good track record." No, it doesn't, but then neither does dictatorship. Most end in revolutions. (touche assumed)

  • It's funny but I do understand more about what is happening over there now.

  • The Puff being out of frame was really distracting this time for some reason.

  • Who's the guy in the picture behind you?

  • @greerstorm Woody Guthrie.

  • I think John should write a story about people in a revolution. Singsong*- There can be nerdy romance! :D

  • The people of Egypt are evolving from Atoms to Universes :)

  • My personal opinion we should forget about Egypt and other countries and focus on our own country and fix our problems like our economy for example the only reason Egypt is plastered all over American tv at the moment is the same reason any news is put on American tv to distract the public from the crapy job our politicians are doing. I am not trying to down play what is happening in Egypt good for them but what they are doing doesn't put Americans into jobs or fix our other problems.

  • @NMonterosso I'm sorry to say this but your statement fails a little, you said "focus on our own country" but the internet is international, so we ARE focusing on our problems. Plus, people are quite good at multi-tasking. I'm sure we can look at more than one country at once without getting too confused.

  • @savvy826 If you actually read my post you would see I was talking about the US government focusing on our own country notice twice I said American. I wasn't talking about everyone in the world and yes I realize that the internet is international. So before saying someones comment fails try reading it first and not just skimming it.

  • That was a terrible transition. Just saying.

And now I have another crack pot idea on why fast food is subsidized in the U.S.--because we would obviously be revolting if we could NOT get cheap food in the U.S. and the gov't could not afford for the general public to take charge and get the REAL info on what's in Area 51. NOTHING to do with grimy corporate hands in the gov't, obviously.

Non-Question in Q. form: You should dye your hair blue? For uh... Something cool? I don't care what? DFTBA!

  • For more information about the Egyptian revolution please feel free to contact me

P.S: I'm an Egyptian protest who live this events every day...

  • Mubarak also stole $40 to $70 BILLIONS from the Egyptian people, which would pretty much solve all their problems for a long time ...

  • @pinochet222 80 bilion dollars!

  • @pinochet222 well they froze his accounts in switzerland i hope they could give it back to us...that would solve alot of our problems and fix the damage that was caused by the police and the government!

  • @pinochet222 they want us poor so we cant get Married and make family

couz this will make us may be 200 Million not Just 80 Millions !

and this will make Egypt have big army !

watch out may be the world will be agent us and help Mubarak to Hidden the Money !

  • DFTBA

  • I'm doing an essay for journalism about the Egypt crisis and this video helped so much! Thanks a lot dude=]

  • I made my social teacher a nerdfighter by using this video as a source for my essay on Egypt. Awesome? Totally

  • I just realized your baby is over a year old now. Congratulations!

  • ya in egypt some guy around april of last year
