    ....of tranquility.

Yanhong: Through gymnastics, I had been honored with my success and it had a great influence on my contemplation of life, the very basics of how I face the littlest of things. I am always positive no matter what kind of circumstances I find myself in, I learn to face them squarely with integrity. Yes, that was the greatest influence on me.

    -Ends-

As I translated this video, I found that Ma Yanhong is an admirable individual.

Yanhong: It really was an miracle because my stomach did not hurt after that! Like it was forgotten!

Ma Yanhong had this photo taken after the championship, she snipped off her ponytail that had been with her for the past 15 years.

Yanhong: Back then we weren't allowed to keep short hair and we all had ponytails; but right then I just felt that I was released and I just had it snipped off.

Time flies, Yanhong left herself an unforgettable memory 23 years ago. Now, she has chosen a life....

Yanhong:....and then it was like "you've got to move, now!", then I was just up!(Yanhong laughing)

Yanhong: It was like a force of some kind guiding you, "it's time for you to go out there whether you're ready or not! Guess what?! Out you go!" And I did not have any doubt, like I want to give up or whatever.

Ma Yanhong's performance was indisputable, the judges granted her a perfect score.

Yanhong: I felt that I could shout and celebrate then.

Yanhong: My mind just replayed my best routines, the ones that were without the littlest flaws, like a movie; the most perfect routine I had ever done just playback in my mind.

Live commentator: Ma Yanhong, the Chinese gymnast on the UB now. High difficulty. Very stable dismount....

As Yanhong had a good dismount, nobody had remembered that she was in great pain just a few minutes ago.

Yanhong: I had thought that it was a miracle. I couldn't move when it wasn't time for me to go.....

The UB finals was about to commence, but Yanhong was still in great agony.

Yanhong: Everybody was panic to the point of pulling their hair out.

All the other competing gymnasts were getting into the arena.

Yanhong: My mind was at a blank when it happened. All I knew was that it was time for me to compete and I just got myself up! Whatever I had a moment ago, I don't know! It gradually subsided...

Yanhong stood before the bars without time to warm up.

....with a 1st ranking in UB prelims, she was the hope for the UB finals champion.

But just before the UB finals commenced, a situation that no one expected developed.

Yanhong: A sudden attack of gastric ulcer, quite severe too.

Just an hour before the finals, Yanhong had a sudden gastric ulcer attack that the team doctor couldn't have done anything to help.

Yanhong: I was just curled up, they were all around me but I just couldn't move let alone stretch my body out.

Yanhong:....anymore; and that was the time when you just really wanted to quit.

As 1984 Los Angeles Olympics was approaching, Yanhong changed her mind after all.

Yanhong: Once you had an inner strength, like the 'Chi', welling up in your body, you could just kept going to the moment of calling. But if you just let it go, then you'd deflate like a balloon. We had basically set the ultimate goal for the Olympics.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Yanhong had regained her best form.....

Although she did not compete at that Olympics, nonetheless, Yanhong was a star of that time.

Yanhong: We didn't make it there, but I got all kinds of praises and interviews from the medias at various activities.

Just as she was getting the attention, Yanhong's performances were sliding downhill due to her injury; she had no chance to earn a single world championship since 1980 to 1983.

Yanhong: So, I started to have weight problem and also with injuries, I didn't think I was up to it....

....in Beijing with simple decorations. These pictures are especially eye-catching, they simply brought us back to those golden memories.

1979, at the 20th Gymnastics World Championships, 15 years old Ma Yanhong won the UB gold medal(9.95)and became the first Chinese UB world champion. She was at her peak. China did not participate in the 1980 Olympics, due to historical development.

Yanhong: So I missed the best opportunity to compete when I was at my peak, I felt that was quite regrettable.

  • For my youtube friend, dutfil, and all Ma Yanhong fans:

Ma Yanhong, 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Uneven Bars Champion.

1984 Los Angeles Olympics, women gymnastics UB finals.

As the UB competing gymnasts were preparing, Ma Yanhong was nowhere to be seen.

Yanhong: I was in a corner, curling up like a ball, hiding from everybody's view; it was almost time for UB finals to commence and I didn't want people to know that I couldn't even stand up straight.

Today, Yanhong lives in an apartment....
