F1 in Detroit...man I wish I was alive and old enough to have appreciated this...I live less than a hour away from this, and it's a shame what's become of the city, and the state of Michigan as a whole. We have the Belle Isle Grand Prix for IndyCar (at the moment), but I don't think it would compare to this. While I actually do enjoy IndyCar (despite what the haters say about it), it's not the cream of the crop of motorsports. THIS is, especially in an era with drivers like Mansell and Senna.
@Hungary599 Absolutely! Everyone compares prost and senna, but mansell was a far better driver than Prost ever was.Senna and Mansell always had the best battles imo.
@whatfffd Mansell vs Berger was also a great duel ;) Although he was not as fast as Senna or Prost, but Mansell was one of the most brilliant overtakers in F1 history.
if you learn inside and out of track,... the one who always fight and a great racer are Mansell.
Fight to find sponsorship, fight against against bad luck, fights again diseases, fights against others champions. Senna is a wealthy man, for all factor, you will realize nobody can be compared to Mansell.
Hard to remember when they actually used to overtake in F1for the lead without this years B.S. computer wing. Oh, When racing was racing! Bring it back Bernie. Take away downforce for real. When racing was actually racing. Guys like Button haven't seen it since go-carts. Not just saying it , racing sucks compared to then. Now they just race for the next pit stop even with the new computer wing B.S. Thanks Bernie.
@SuperBuzz71 You sound like an idiot... F1 cars today are fast , faster than those years. F1 drivers today race longer races and under very hot temperatures. Obviously you don't know shit on racing , wait for the new engines if you want something fresh.
PS:The cars have much less downforce than 2004-2005-2006-2007-2008 but you can't understand this because you are a moron or 85 years old with eyes focused on the PAST! THE PAST IS IN THE PAST! THE FUTURE IS NOW! STFU AND ENJOY RACING !
@Dickorla Take it easy now Dick. Sorry I offended your love of hi speed parades. Cars have less DF since '04 because F1 responded to aero advances with new rules. Most recently the Dbl Diffuser. Want me to explain how it worked it to you? I've followed racing for 25yrs. In fact, I made a living in it for 5. One year was with Da Matta future F1 driver. I claimed racing was better with less down force. Tends to be true no matter the temp or length of race. In fact, Lauda says DRS is B.S. too!
@Dickorla: You seem to have no idea about F1. In the 80s they came out of the Monaco tunnel with 330 km/h, now they just have 280 km/h. With Turbo-Engines they were much quicker. And the races are not longer, who told you this? And the temperatures.....they don´t change that much or do you think in former years they were racing in winter;-)
Did they just compare Detroit to Monaco? Did I here Steffan Johannson? Wow. While I know this isn't Belle Isle...I hated that circuit...as much as Detroit is the motor city, a GP there, hell an IRL race there, would be cautious. The people of Detroit would have a field day picking people off, lol. Well, what's left of them. It's okay my GF is from Grosse Pointe. Sorry I have bad times every time I go to Detroit.

Theres only one stat that matters to me, Most pole positions in least races. You can take that stat and string it out over an estimated career length and you'd see hes the best ever.
Very nice to see again, Mansell and Senna were allways competing on the edge, they werent afraid of eachother on the track and both acted like gentleman when they overtook eachother, also the cars were more competitive so they could have a fight each race. This was most evident on streetraces.
Mansell overtake Senna because he missed missed a gear entering Turn One. In lap 5 His rear brake pads were too cool and had become glazed and Senna was close. In lap 8 Senna overtake Mansell, In lap 14 Senna suddenly ducked into the pits with a slowly deflating right rear tire. He re-enter in 8th place near 20s behind Arnoux, then overtake Piquet in a great battle [Piquet crash before Senna overtake] and win. Senna wins over cars near 90hp more powerful than Lotus. The King of Street Circuits
what a powerful engine Honda turbo engine was! on the other side this caused also a high tyre consumption. Mansell's tyres after 7 laps already in trouble...
Beautiful cars. Almost as good looking as the cars from the early 60s, just before the aero doo-dads and gee-gaws. Of course they were much more of a coffin too!
The drivers didn't really like the Detroit circuit mainly because it was narrow, bumpy, slow and offered little grip but Senna made the track his own really winning in 86, 87 & 88.
The track also had good results with the 3.5L Cosworth DFV engine against the turbo onslaught of the 1980's. John Watson win in a McLaren in 82, Michele Alboreto won in a Tyrrell in 83 and Martin Brundle finished 2nd (later DQ) in a Tyrrell in 84.
It was only the 8th lap. Senna overtake Mansell in a clever maneuver and he was not in trouble. He lost his momentum just for a while when Arnoux overtake him too....then, the king of street circuits wins this race, against 130hp more Williams
The thing is that back then power was not enough to win races. The cars were not as easy to control as they are today (don't forget there were no steering wheel mounted paddles for gearchanging, aerodynamics and grip weren't as good) so winning depended more on the driver skills than the car (unlike today). I watched this clip now and remembered how boring it is today :(
Personally I hope that Malaysian "Team Lotus" loses in court and can be renamed 1MalaysiaRacing (or whatever their back-up name is), whereas Group Lotus can win the name back for 2012 and be Lotus-Renault, rather than "Lotus Sponsored" Renault as it is named now.
Ok, it's not classic team Lotus with Colin Chapman, but neither was Team Lotus 1982-1994 after Chapman had died.
In an interview from the same tape of this bbc footage, if i remember? Mansell said during practice he had over 1500 horsepower under his right foot. :)
yeah you heard that interview too :P i remember him saying that too. funny how our memories work! wow 1600 hp in a small light streamlined vehicle ! lol :P
Arnoux was the best driver in this race , in my opinion . He was driving a poor Ligier , and made an overtake in the great Williams of Nigel Mansell . Mansell's performance was terrible in this race , in my opinion .
Senna show again what a class a genius he was. In street circuits he was the king. Against the great Nigel and the 2 times WC Piquet with 130hp more than Senna's Lotus. He suffer a slow puncture and goes to 8th. "I slowed down to take a rest as it was very hard physically and I was losing the feeling in my right foot because it is too hard on the brake pedal here. Then it was fighting back again and it was like that the whole race." Senna, the great one.
Yes!! In the seansons 1985-86 the Honda Turbo of the Williams more 130-140hp of the Renault Turbo of the Ligier and Lotus. Maximum power was of the 1500 L4T BMW and Ferrari Turbo with 1000hp RPM 11200 approx in the qualify.. Yes Senna the king of the street circuit and forever the great one...
Great upload, you don't happen to have the 1984 race in the US when Mansell passes out do you. Would ove to see more of that race than there is on here :-)
What s incredible race !!! Incredible Racers and Amazing Track !!

"...this typically Detroit scene..." Funny, I didn't see anyone getting stabbed.
"Detroit, like Monaco, is unusual in having a tunnel..." And that is probably the only time in history someone has compared Detroit to Monaco.
But seriously, I wish I could watch this entire race. That JPS Lotus is absolutely epic. Those were the days... real gentlemen racing real cars.

Huub rothengater surely one of the 'lost generation' of Grand Prix drivers.
darkarts59 2 years ago
what a powerful engine Honda turbo engine was! on the other side this caused also a high tyre consumption. Mansell's tyres after 7 laps already in trouble...

Beautiful cars. Almost as good looking as the cars from the early 60s, just before the aero doo-dads and gee-gaws. Of course they were much more of a coffin too!

I wish they still ran this.
I would have loved to have seen it.

He lost his momentum just for a while when Arnoux overtake him too....then, the king of street circuits wins this race, against 130hp more Williams
joseavs 2 years ago 3
The thing is that back then power was not enough to win races. The cars were not as easy to control as they are today (don't forget there were no steering wheel mounted paddles for gearchanging, aerodynamics and grip weren't as good) so winning depended more on the driver skills than the car (unlike today). I watched this clip now and remembered how boring it is today :(

Lotus, McLaren Honda, Ligier, Williams Renault... miss those teams nowdays...Lotus mayby is Back for 2010-11 season :D
RUKALION 2 years ago 10
Hello.
Yes Lotus is back for 2010 season, but i,m not happy because is not an a English Lotus......, is an a Asian Lotus....Are two different things....
I love the old English Lotus with his great BOSS Mr.s Colin Chapman.....
Fenderfan1975 2 years ago 4
@Fenderfan1975

Arnoux was the best driver in this race , in my opinion . He was driving a poor Ligier , and made an overtake in the great Williams of Nigel Mansell . Mansell's performance was terrible in this race , in my opinion .

Senna is the best
Giova2022 3 years ago 3
Fenderfan1975 3 years ago
yeah i agree senna is the best ! though he fought against strong drivers who made his achievements even more valuable !

Do u know what is a gifted driver? Senna is the one in a million!

Then it was fighting back again and it was like that the whole race." Senna, the great one.
joseavs 3 years ago 7
