A band like this will come again. The next generation is not taking any shit. No labels holding back.. I hate to say it, but there may just be something better than the pumpkins coming. i can feel it.
I woke this morning super depressed cause i have a crush on a girl and she doesn't even realize i exist basically. Listened to this song a dozen times and learned to play it on guitar and it's made me feel great. Really beautiful song, hope to get some more great tunes like this from billy soon.
lol@ calling the pumpkins 'indie' in 2000. The pumpkins lost any indie credibility after Siamese Dream. They were a killer band, but definitely not indie. Maybe you guys are too young to remember all this, but MCIS sold nearly 10 MILLION copies in the US alone. SD sold 4 million copies. That doesn't discount how awesome they were, but its totally off base to call them indie. If anything, as they progressed, they became more "indie" like.
@fakeplasticmeat The term "indie" doesn't have anything to do with record sales. It has to do with what record label they're signed onto, be it mainstream or independent. Also, "indie cred" is bullshit anyway. Signing on with a mainstream record label is a wise career move, not "selling out" as the "original fans" usually put it. So their music is now going to be more accessible to the masses. Boo hoo.
@foxylady1984 USED to be a wise career move. Things have changed a LOT. It's not really clear-cut as to what the truly smart move is anymore. People do different things and see success.
@Commiteee Your statement is contradictory. The production of a record greatly influences how it sounds. Indie in the most basic way means that they're not tied to a major label. Today, "indie" gets thrown around so much its pretty meaningless.
However, re-read my statement, "If anything, as they progressed, they became more 'indie' like". The pumpkins were the antithesis of indie in every way imaginable for Gish, SD, MCIS, Adore, and one could argue Machina too. They're more "indie" today
@fakeplasticmeat AFTER Siamese Dream? They didn't have any with Gish. It was common belief at the time that their deal with Caroline had been set up to give them some "indie" cred before they'd immediately jump to a major. They were routinely attacked for this well before Siamese Dream was released. A lot of "indie" bands had huge problems with the Pumpkins even early on.
Well, in Machina, there's this song, Try Try Try, and I guess Everasting Gaze and Heavy Metal Machine is alright. In Adore, they had: Perfect, Behold the Nightmare, and to a lesser extent, Once Upon a Time, and Daphne Descends, and Pug. To the ppl who can see that they changed from indie to pop, I feel your pain. Still he's more creative than the shit today.
I agree, even thought Mellon Collie was the ultimate Smashing Pumpkins album it would be simply ridicilous for them to go and try and recreate it again
@mercurymadhatter Yeah, I see what you mean, but without Chamberlain, Iha, and Darcy, it's really different. I mean they kinda went from indie to mainstream, and that's what really turned off their fans
@meddlingmage23 Well I'm not talking about Zeitgeist, that was just an awful album. When they still had the original lineup (aside from Chamberlain not on Adore and D'arcy not on Machina) and made those two last albums that were really good. I have to admit though, when I first heard Adore and Machina I thought they were horrible. Adore being tremendously boring and Machina being completely over processed which drowned out Billy's voice. I guess mainstream listeners thought the same thing too.
I wondered why no one seems to like this album and why it never gained the admiration it deserves, it is my personal favorite album by them. Now I know it is because its a special kind of album, one that only a few people find and fewer see its true beauty.
@tehanonbelieve my opinion is that at the time, bands like nsync and backstreet boys and britney spears were coming onto the scene and the underground grunge era was over. The pumpkins just failed to reconnect to the old audience from mellon collie and failed to reconnect with the new pop audience. Both due to the change in style, although the change had a very good result in my opinion.
yes, it's sadly underated but it rest a TRUE FACT of the history of rock. so let's smile. Machina is'nt for stupid posers or noobs. stay united and keep this masterpiece alive
in the latest issue of rolling stone, theres an article on Billy, and they mention how the relationship tween Billy and James is pretty much non-existant and has been ever since around the time Machina, Darcy was pretty much gone by this point , so for the most part the "band" was pulling away from billy anyway

Not the best song from the Machina... Chorus and bridge sounds great but verse and break pushes it down..

This is basically Corgan's break-up song. I don't think that the band really wanted to break up, but they couldn't hold it together any more.
I blow the dust off my guitars
In the attic with the stars
I read your letters
To feel better
My tears upon the fading ink
As I of the morning now gone
Pick up where my thoughts left off
Cause I'm home to die on my own
Sounds like I'm leaving and it is not because I really want to, but we have to and I don't know why.
