I think Russia is jealous of America. Ever gone into a video on youtube that's a "Who will win WWIII"? Most of the people who post comments to those videos are Russians trying their hardest to make Russia's military, economy, and government look better than the USA's. USA is stronger than Russia, especially airforce-wise. "If you own the sky, you own the field." This sounds pretty much like something Russia would try to do.
The best solution for any country who has a nuclear weapon is not to retaliate even if it got hit. Should they respond, other countries would follow....
But that's the problem. If Russia fires a nuke at USA, it will only get shot down 50 miles off the coast, and then USA will either fire hydrogen bombs or nuclear bomb back at them, or attack the old-fashioned way. A standard ass-whoopin'.

@suarneduj - The book is written in 1982, and it makes the assumption that the war in Afghanistan ended before this conflict. Please read the comments and do some research before posting comments like this on my video.

I think Russia is jealous of America. Ever gone into a video on youtube that's a "Who will win WWIII"? Most of the people who post comments to those videos are Russians trying their hardest to make Russia's military, economy, and government look better than the USA's. USA is stronger than Russia, especially airforce-wise. "If you own the sky, you own the field." This sounds pretty much like something Russia would try to do.

But that's the problem. If Russia fires a nuke at USA, it will only get shot down 50 miles off the coast, and then USA will either fire hydrogen bombs or nuclear bomb back at them, or attack the old-fashioned way. A standard ass-whoopin'.

Of course atleast 1. Maybe even 3 or 4. But once the bombing is over, US will either come back with twice as many, or attack the old fashioned way. And I just recently found out that Russia only has 1/3rd of the population of US. That's a lot more military personell.

Man.. :( i don't know about you guys, but I don't entertain the thought of the cold war going hot, it really scares me in fact. With the amount of nuclear weapons that were accumulated, i'm sure that our surface would be coated in a fine white layer of radioactive ash.
As for the oil/natural gas debate going on here, i personally think it's a waste of time, they're almost depleted. Scientists are all working on zero point energy developing, anti-gravity, and monoatomic gold superfoods.

"there is no oil" - see ploesti in Romania
"nothing, even gas" - Poland lies on huge gas fields (still mostly untouched), 50% of polish gas consumption cames from own gas fields.
i dont even mention about coal, copper, aluminium, gold, silver (Poland is number 3 producer of silver in the world) and many others.

The Soviet Union probably would have won a non-nuclear war, especially if the NATO attacked.

"The Third World War: August 1985," by Sir Major John Hackett, was written based on the NATO wargame scenarios. The first time I read this book was 1983 and it really described the situation between the US/NATO and the USSR/Warsaw Pact at the time.
There were several times when we were this close to going to war. To be honest, I'm surprised we survived as long as we have.
