John Brown is an important historical figure in American history. Its depressing that the children that learned this song now know nothing about him or his contributions to freeing the enslaved blacks in the South. This song is not offensive by any means, but it saddens me that not only do textbooks barely talk about him but people only know his name from 'John Brown's Baby.' Did you know that he had twenty children and only eight outlived him? Talk about irony here.

OMG! My vice principal (or whatever he was) sang this in my elementary school before. I always thought he just made it up himself. Though he said "OLD John Brown's Baby" when he sang it. Gosh, the things I don't know.

I remember this song(not this version).

I used to have it on a tape with a load of other nursery rhymes. Think it was called Playgroup Favourites or something like that and I'd love to get another copy of it.
