If China had any sense of nationhood, it would have forseen the complete failure of the North Korean system decades ago, indeed, as it was radically re-assessing it's own shortcomings under Mao, and absorbed the north as a province. An overtly Korean fiefdom within China could have been easily maintained, an unmoveable buffer between the south and Japan.
