  • THIS IS SO EPIC!!!!

  • @amandorox4949 okay thanks.

  • @Monarch319 no. He obviously used a giant freezer!!!!

  • @MADDENOUGH I think he used the weather

  • jow did u freeze it

  • Oh my gosh dude that's an awesome rink! My parents would never let me do that! I love hockey and skating! That is so cool!

  • this is dope. no netting in the back for when u miss the net? hahaa

  • @uz16 I have a net now. I got one from bluelakeplastics. Its official hockey netting. It has saved a few pucks!

  • that is going to last like one week

  • i got a better idea add a DJ to it

  • the best thing to do is run a hose from a local school so they get stuck with the water bill

  • @willi2209 I saw that story. Chicagoland?

  • Another good way to make a rink is to

    - Pat the snow as you mentioned.

    - take a hot water heater and spray droplets evenly over the snow for layers and layers

    - use a misty feature to even it out

(I use hot water because the temperature reaction happens alot quicker that cold water on snow).

This is creative too! Nice job!

  • Probably the shittiest song I've ever heard but thanks for the tut :)

  • @RaVexChainz Yeah, I'm not a fan of Audioswap.

  • so lucky i live in NJ and it just doesnt seem to get cold enough like it used to, to sustain ice. i would do anything to have that in my backyard :(

  • @xA3GIS especially this season

  • wow big back yard LUCKY :P

  • :C It's hot in winter here. I've never even seen snow. ~_~

  • How did u attach the 2 pieces of plastic so it didnt leak

  • @thebestpalermo It did leak, that is why I had to pack the snow. I buy one sheet now from blue lake plastics. He also sells really good sealing tape that would have worked.

  • I wish i didn't live in fucking australia so it would actually get cold in winter

  • What was the overall cost?

  • Is a liner necessary?

  • @EthanTheGoalie Yes, then you can just fill it up. Without the liner, you have to pack the snow, which is much more time consuming. Your grass will also survive with a liner. I guess you could go without a liner, but you wont be happy with the amount of work.

  • Are the liners reusable, hold water and what is the best way to attach them? Staple gun? Might have to buy one for next year. Built the framing for the first time this year and using a tarp i had lying around. Haven't been able to fill it because it will leak out. Unfortunately, this winter has been so damn warm. Very strange. Awesome rink

  • @91nyr Yeah, this has been a bad winter everywhere. Mine has been unusable most of the season. I get a new liner every year, but I suppose you could try to reuse it. I use clamps to hold it up, and lay it over the boards. Once I'm done with the final touches, I take a razor blade and cut the excess plastic. The pucks will most likely put a bunch of holes in the exposed plastic, which is why it would be hard to reuse.

  • oh sorry i didn't see ur other video guess u already knew that

  • use white liner cause if you use clear the sun rays will go through heating up the ground which will melt the rink

  • @TheHockeyswag21 correct. and it looks better.

  • What did you do with the excess plastic on the boards behind the net? Did you leave it stapled to the boards or trim it down?

  • @rangerbuffalo Once I got my desired level of ice, I took a razor blade and cut it off.

  • @jluinstr how many pucks have you nailed over the fence and into other people's yards

  • I hate living in virginia..

  • @LiqhtWeiqht I agree... so much... >:(

It snowed and iced the other day, but nowhere near enough.

  • @EthanTheGoalie Yeah, it iced over today and I was outside shooting around haha :D

  • I literally did this exact procedure and the wood just collapsed -_-

  • @TeamDnZo At the seems of the boards, you need to have at least 2' of the same size board behind it. This should keep it stable enough. If not, you can buy clamps from Blue Lake Plastics, or build your own. That will help the boards.

  • Thanks very much for the video. Great job on the rink.

  • was the plastic vapor barrier?

  • Fantastic job!

  • ummm Hey i was wondering how you got it to freeze mine just keeps melting every minute any advice

  • @BrassProductionsHD It has to be colder if it keeps melting, if it's cold enough and you let it sit without moving it/adding more, it should freeze.

  • @BrassProductionsHD wow,u cant be serious.obviously the weather has to be below freezing for a few days in a row.

  • Amazing... I live in Tennessee.....

  • im in florida

  • how did u attach the 2 by 4s together

  • @ovechkinhockey207 by using another 2X4 behind the seam. Leave 1' of over lap behind the board to make sure it's stable.

  • thats pretty bad ass except for the wild logo.. Go Sharks haha

  • Anyone who loves hockey please check out my channel and i will soon have videos on my backyard rink up

  • do you have a mini zamboni

  • i live in texas but i love hockey so ill never be able to do this it sucks i might make a synthetic ice rink though ive been playing inlinne/roller hockey nice job bro

  • Спасибо большое))) Thank you)

  • Thumbs Up if you wanna Thumbs Down this comment?

  • oo no top comments now its my time to shine (coughs)......hi :)

  • how long does this take?

  • That is honestly the sweetest fucking thing ive ever seen, well done bro

  • how much did the 2x4's cost?

  • Very nice instructions. I might not do it 100% the way you did it but it taught me enough tips and whatnot about the whole process. Your rink looks super good man, I am a Red Wings fan, (I live in metro Detroit.) I might even do a cardboard graffiti stencil to put my logo on my boards in layers of white/red. I wish I would've dug supports in, for the 2x4's to lean against before the ground became frigid though. Next year I'll be much more prepared ahead of time. Thanks again for making this vid.

  • @hahajoeiscool i live in windsor!~!!!!!

  • i have a 20x90 liner that needs to be cut in half. Do you need to glue them together or just lay the two halves on top of each other and start flooding?

  • I think he packed snow where the two pieces meet to form ice but I'm not sure

  • how much did that whole rink in total cost?

  • @EEGaming1 Mine is finished but its not that big well its better then spending 20$ to go to the skating rink for like 3 hours.

  • I've never played hockey and not really in to it but this is pretty cool lol nice vid :)

  • Good video great job on the rink

  • Shouldn't the goal be on the red line not the blue line

  • @bradhockey98 Yeah, I only put blue tape out as a reminder of where the goal goes. I also didn't know how much the heat of the sunlight would affect red, compared to the more subtle blue color. This year I have a roll of red duct tape that I will run the entire width of the rink and we will see how it goes. I will use the blue painters tape for the blue line again though, it worked pretty well.

  • what kind of plywood do u use and how long does it last.

  • @Darianfish It's a little thicker than 1/4". This will be the third year. When I disassemble the rink, I stack them up on blocks and cover them tightly with plastic to keep the water out of it. They all seem to be in good shape still.

  • when u put on the 2 peace of plastic what do u do with that line in the middle so the water doesnt leak

  • @jluinstr Same question as seanpwns04, but i live in ottawa.. when should i start to build the rink ? thank you :)

  • @RockinTheFlow check out my response to him. Ottawa should be cold enough by now.

  • @jluinstr Ok , thank u :)

  • summers gonna be a bitch...

  • @kawasakirider216 As long as it's waterproof, and big enough. Make sure it's at least 6 mil.

  • What did you use to connect the liner together to keep the water from seeping threw ???

  • I want to say "Thank You". I had this idea and started looking in to the project. Your video and comment responses are wonderful. I'm in Elk River, Mn, not far from you and we got our first snow fall today. I have already started the project but with the coming week of rising temps I'm looking fwd to getting further with the boards. One thought...I'm not using 2x4's. I planned to use 2x12's. Do you think is it a mistake?

  • @bmoore92150 No problem! I think 2x12's will be good. This year I double stacked 2x6's, so essentially it's 2X12. I will be making a new video this year with some updates. Just remember, if you have a good liner, you wont need to pack the snow, just fill it up until it's approximately 3" below your desired level. I attached my 2X6's by cutting a 19" 2X6 and placing three screws on each side, that seems to hold it together well.

  • Hey can you answer a question? My dad won't let me build one because he thinks the rink will ruin the grass. How well does your grass turn up after the season? Thanks alot! Great Video!

  • @BestInTheWorldWWWYKI If you use a plastic liner, it wont ruin the grass. It will take about 2 extra weeks to green up where your ice was. After that, it greens up nicely.

  • how do you make it so smooth.

  • @maaberwald I use a rink rake with hot water.

  • The goal line is suppose to be red, u damn spartans

  • @goldygopher26 Hello my fellow gopher fan. The kids are Edina Hornets. I was apprehensive to have a red goal line, since the red is brighter than the blue, it may trap heat and melt the ice quicker. I do have a roll of red duct tape this year, and I'm going to give it a shot.

  • @jluinstr when would you recommend to start building one? I live in NH, would it be too early to start now?

  • @seanpwns04 My rink is filling with water right now. We will have a low of 17 degrees tonight and it looks like the temps will stay below freezing from here on out. Whenever you get cold enough weather (below freezing) and it looks like winter is here, you can start filling it. I'm not sure what the temperatures do in NH. It's never to early to start putting your boards up though. It's better to put them up before snow, or real cold weather.

  • is it true if you dont have a water proofed house your house floods if you do this.

  • @Mcdounalds200 Typically your yard will have a gradual slope away from your house, so the water should never get close to your house. I wouldn't build it too close to the house though, since you want to make sure the water drains away from it.

  • about how many of gallons is it, and how did you get the plywood andd liner to stay?

  • @ThunDer37816 I'm not sure how many gallons it is. at the low end, the ice is about 12" thick, and the high end the ice is about 4" thick. I used my fence posts and several additional 2x4's to mount the plywood. for the high end, I use 2x6's, create the outline and connect them all with 19" 2X6's, and place three screws on each side. for the liner, I hang clamps from the top of the plywood and that holds the liner up.

  • can u still do it if your backyard has a litttle slant

  • @Darianfish Yes, mine has a little slant. The ice is 12" thick on the low end, and 4" think on the high end.

  • do u put the snow over the plastic and do u have to stack your 2x4 and how much would it cost for all the plywood and 2x4's

  • @Darianfish If you have a good sheet of plastic, you don't need to mess with the snow, just put water in it. The snow is used to create a base if you have a leak, By packing the snow, and spraying it, it will create a base layer to keep the water from leaking into the ground. Remember, only use snow if you have a leak, since it's more time consuming.

  • @Darianfish You will have to measure out your rink size and go to your hardware store for pricing. This year I double stacked 2X6's to make it a little higher. I found 16' 2x6's for around $5 a piece. I didn't get green treated, i just went with the kiln dried and painted them white. Green treated are quite a bit heavier and not as easy to paint white.

  • If you dont mind me asking, how much did all the plywood cost?

  • @RMH191 It was around $200, but this will be my third year with it, so it lasts.

  • thumbs up if yur from minnesota

  • how cold does it have to be? I live in Princeton NJ and it is usually around 15-20 degrees.

  • @48Sikora You want it to be in the mid to low teens to start it. Once its frozen through, it just has to stay below freezing.

  • how much money was all that water?

  • if you add enough water so its all covered barely, let it freeze. Then build the ice up in really small layers it makes great ice. also after you skate scrape it then re-coat it with a mist. Nice rink tho dude!! props

  • minesota logo kills it... ;)

  • I kinda dont understand how the ice looks so smooth, i mean with the slush of the snow, I would imagine that it mae huge bumps

    How do you do it?

  • @TheJack0Phantom The snow was just used to create the base. When I made this rink a few years ago, I didn't have a good sheet of plastic to just fill it up. So I packed the snow and sprayed it. once that froze a solid base, I just dumped 55 gallon drums of water on it. Now that I have the plastic, I just fill it. Which is much easier.

  • how did you paint the Wild logo on the boards?

  • @21mknugget You can rent a projector or find someone that has one. Hook up your laptop to the projector and trace your logo with a pencil. After that I taped off the boards and painted one color at a time.

  • @21mknugget sticker

  • @21mknugget You can use a projector. Hook it up to a laptop and project the image you want. Trace the image, and then paint it.

  • all together how much did this cost

  • nice thinking of doing it this winter

  • oh wow

  • *sigh* awesome..too bad its never snowing where i live... :(

  • It's so easy.

1.) Have a lot of time

    2.) Money

  • Hey this is my first year plain hockey I'm a freshman and need to learn how to skate better I can skate mild but not spectucalur and I am building a ring it's big it's half a jounior rink size and I got the foundation all laid out with the tarp now do I just start pouring water on it but the vid mentioned sumthing about snow so idk what to do now

  • @mathproable You only have to worry about packing the snow if you have a leak. If you have a tarp that will hold the water, just fill it up and give it time to freeze.

  • plastic or tarp? what do you think?

  • will it still word if you dont have liner and boards????

  • @71hockeycentral it might work. If you pack the snow and do little at a time. It will take a long time though, since you can't just turn your hose on and let it fill.

  • is plastic better then tarp?

  • how many gallons went into that

  • @ilvesmies1 That's a good question, but I have no idea. The water bill is quite high though.

  • how do you clean the ice do you have a zamboni

  • @MrJason8992 i made a rink rake. I have a video showing how to make them. You can build one for less than $15 out of PVC.

  • can it be tarpaulin too not plastic

  • tell me how did you frozen the ice every day do you have a zamboni?

  • Awesome, Now all you need is like a 14' by 14' Boards to go in behind the net so you can roof some shots with having to worry about it going into someones window.

  • In December and january it someones times snows in England. And freezes up. Last year I was able to make a snowboard and have some fun. Do you think this possible?

  • @Kingkarabu As long as it stays below freezing. Ideally, you want it to be below 15 degrees F, to start the freezing.

  • quick question, does it ruin the grass once u take it down? we are thinking about building one, the only problem is my mom doesn't want her grass ruined. all replys wil help.

  • @shortstopprodigy No, it doesn't ruin the grass, it will usually take a couple extra weeks to green up in the spring.

  • @jluinstr So if I buy a plastic sheet it will not ruin the grass ??

  • @SlovakiaNHL11 where do you come in this conversation? LOL kid im done.

  • I live in Placerville,CA.Sometimes it snows a little, but it does not freeze up.Our deck freezes sometimes in winter,so when you walk out to go to the bus in the morning, you slip and fall on your butt

  • @reesebwhitehead In canada if you slipon ice your the world's biggest noob

  • I wish I lived where it snowed

  • Amazing jesus christ

  • Great Video! We are thinking are building an ice rink in the winter is it alright if we use your guidelines?

  • @hockeyfinatics of course, that's why I made the video! Just remember, if you get one sheet of plastic, you can just fill it almost all the way up, you wont need to pack snow.

  • Quick question, what do you mean by 'pack down the snow' when starting out? Also with the 55 gallon drum do you just pour the whole thing on at once and it evens out on its own? Thanks

  • @WHITE5KIN Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. You only have to worry about packing down the snow if you don't have a good sheet of plastic. I currently have a custom cut sheet of plastic that I use now, so I dont have to worry about leaks. If you have to worry about leaks, you can pack down the snow and soak it to create your base. The 55 gallon drum gets dumped at once, which will find its own level.

  • @jluinstr Sweet for clearing that up to me, thank you for your advice and video much appreciated!!

  • Comment removed

  • I will freaking drive from orlando to wherever it is that you live at JUST for this! :D

  • @sheyras I suppose you can't build one of these in Orlando!

  • @jluinstr unfortunately, no. i have to pay 7 dollars each week to go to the indoor ice rink. its ridiculous, if i never moved from new jersey I wouldve soooo used this video to make my own backyard. the ice looks like it was made by a professional! props to you! (:

  • did you have to let it snow

  • how much did the whole thing cost to build

  • how much did the whole thing cost to build

  • I live in an area where it dosent get very cold. It only gets to the lowest of 37-40 deegrees farenhiet, and that only happens in the morning. What i do to help with getting the rink without moving anywhere?

  • That looks really nice, how much did it end up costing and how long did it take you to put together?

  • you are mad lucky to have this

  • I would love to have a rink in my backyard, but I'm lucky enough that the local park has a public outdoor hockey rink within 15 minutes from my house

  • I just bought a house across the community centre with four sheets of fantastic ice. FULL ice sheets.. but cute back yard rink though.

  • GO FUCKEN MINNESOTA!!!!!!! YOU GUYS ARE JUST MAD BECAUSE YOU SUCK

  • GO FUCKEN MINNESOTA!!!!!!! YOU GUARE JUST MAD BECAUSE YOU SUCK

  • wow thats awesome my ice rink wasnt that cool ... :D

  • the wild suck! GO BRUINS!

  • the wild suck!

  • yo how long does this approx. take and does it have to have snow... out here it gets freezing but rarely any snow... btw thats pretty sick

  • awesome dude. I take it you live in minnesota

  • Synthetic Ice?

  • @mounsteres Nope, this is real ice.

  • @mounsteres if you watched the video, you wouldn't have asked that question

  • I live in Ohio and I really want to do this next winter

  • Good job man thats awsome

  • damn im gonna need a big yard for the rink I want... he had a pretty decent size and he could only get a little area like the blue line in... damn...

  • I'd love to do this but I live in California... lol oh well.

  • I wish
