This is right here is clear example and one of the highest exponents of what real music is. Regardless of all the problems that Russia as a nation has gone or may be going through right now or in the past, you have to admit that they have a rich culture, in the arts, the music, literature and much more. That's why I hate it so much when I hear the stupidity, hatred, bigotry and flat out cynicism from ultra-nationalists and other uber Russia strong crowd, like if the Cold War hasn't ended.
Thank you very much. Miss him greatly. I'm familiar with yet a third version. None of the three are the same interpretation but each is as incredible as the other. RIP, Ivan.
I am constantly exposed to the music of today (which some agree needs originality, meaning and whatnot) and I still enjoy this kind of music as it gives feeling that the music today cannot.
@MrJa77 Who would think that? We have no peasant class, we're industrialized and our only monarch (Washington) didn't even accept the crown and instead declared a republic.
Anyone that compares the USA to the RE is an idiot. lol
The RF and USA should remember the Cold War is over and move forward together. If the Left can regain the power they enjoyed in both countries during the Great Depression, the revolution will be victorious!
Here are examples of Ivan Rebroff's 2 versions of the "song of the Volga Boatmen". Fist, records in 1968 on the LP "Folk Songs from Old Russia Vol 2". Second, records in 1992 on the CD "Kalinka". ...
Russian music always sounds so hauntingly melancholy. I guess if any single people, other than the Jews, has a right to sing sadly of their past, it's probably the Russians. Such a beautiful culture.
Visit Russia before you say anything negative. It is a beautiful country filled with wonderful people who go out of their way to be helpful to strangers.
You are right. The song, is an ancient popular russian song, sung also by Shaliapin . The russian popular songs are beautiful .But this songs, must be sung only in russian.
Fools, Can't even enjoy some music without quarreling from behind your keyboards? What are you all going to do, get up, dust the cheetos off your lap and fight about who's country is better? Try visiting the other one before reserving your ignorant opinions............fools.

Ivan Rebroff was a German. He was very popular when I was growing up in Germany. It was funny when he was giving interviews on German TV, with a very different voice from his singing voice. He was smart and funny, and he had a great thing going with the whole Russian getup.
This song is without the slightest exagerration is a distinguished part of the World cultural heritage.
The symbolism it contains about our common Humanity, about its eternal daily struggle and its destiny, which it conveys on the deepest level, where it continues to resonate long after the last note has been played and sung is simply phenomenal.
BTW These were remarkably good renditions. The first version is a more classic one, the second is somewhat more intimate, but equally enjoyable.
ron. first. how does anyone here know where i live. second. dont they know upon my death. this country would come down on them like a ton of soviet steel
russian music should live forever in our hearts. i have lyrics to this song. great song, russia may not always play by the rules, and may scare the living hell out of USA. but her music is always so much heart it is heard to let it fall through the cracks like bush has. RUSSIA!
had the chance to see him yesterday, sat in the 1st row direct in front of him - it was amazing! He was kind and warm as ever - the audience loved him!

I must disagree, the medieval-like chorus on the first one owns the souls of all who hear it. Don't get me wrong, the 1992 one is legit too.

I would say that Russian songs are rather nostalgic. I think it has to do with the retrospective mentality of this wonderful people.
