@coolasacoldsummer While the rapist's suffering is lamentable, frankly, it's his own fault. In this case, the rapist's suffering is the consequence of him INFLICTING suffering on someone else. Justice has to come in somewhere, otherwise the rapist would be free to inflict more harm on other people in the future. There must be consequences to causing other people suffering. It's a good framework , I really encourage you to watch the Sam Harris video. Really!
@coolasacoldsummer I'd again put forward that we can. I'd recommend that you watch Sam Harris' Ted Talk if you're interested further in why I say this. We can determine what is moral through the lens of human and animal suffering, again, just like my health example I gave. If we're using suffering as judge for what is right and wrong, we know that there are definitely right and wrong answers to how creatures should be treated, i.e. suffering = bad (immoral) and not suffering = good (moral).
@coolasacoldsummer it's not an opinion. It's fact. Just like nobody would argue that a person having cancer is "just an opinion" on what health is, the same goes for the person who argues that a father putting his daughter to death for being raped is "just an opinion" on morality. To say otherwise would be arguing against reason itself.
i think its important to understand why people practice certain things within their culture without holding any biases of our own, and instead of judging them as 'barbaric' we should engage in dialogue with them, because they might see certain things within out western cultures as 'barbaric' as well, so its all about cultural sensativity, yes there are flaws in cultural relativism but its important to not be ethnocentric...
I agree with this on certain levels yes, but I think we know enough about the human condition to know what is good and bad in a society and where ours is superior. For example, when a man rapes a girl in your society and the first inclination for the father of the girl is to murder his daughter in an attempt to salvage the family's "honor", I think any sane person would agree that our society is vastly superior to any such society as this.
Wow objectivist are worthless idiots if they think this video defends their idiotic world view.
