The Japanese title, "Shinseiki Evangelion" means "New Century Evangelion", unless you translate the Greek also, in which case it becomes "The Gospel of the New Century".

As to the power cable power out thing that comes up in the series could relate to this fact, that if the command pannel is inactive(out of power) an underlying program to shut the creature down is implemented, thus also not an actual part of their body.
