  • hey eric. i just changed the transmission fluid in my 93 gmc k2500. and the fuild was brown...idk why or how it got like that but it was brown. and i actually pulled the transmission cooling line off to change out the fluid from the torque converter as well not just the pan. and it was actually pretty easy doing it that way. but make sure you get the transmission line and not the engine oil cooler..yea i did an impromptu oil change on my truck with that haha. have a good one take care!

  • And Ireland

  • Why don't they put drain plugs in trans pans??

  • LOL ... I hear bells @ 4:40

  • Super informative video. Answered a whole bunch of questions a had regarding this task. Thanks ETCG!

  • Eric, I remember you showing us on your Odyssey van that the filter was well within the transmission. Now, is there a pan on those or does it actually require you to pull the whole transmission out and apart to replace the filter?

  • Eric, I'm about to hit 3 transmission's all complete refurbs, 41TE on my 2003 Chrysler T&C, 46RE on my 2001 Dodge Ram and i hope i got this one right, hoping that a 1990 Chevy G20 has the TH700R4. As always your video's are both helpful and fun to watch, any advice on any of these transmission and which i should do first coz i am not looking forward to any of them. MT

  • Awesome work Eric! Your fan from England :)

  • Hey ETCG great vid thanks! Question, I have 05 silverado 99k and I've checked vin with dealer and it's never been serviced there. I'm ready to do the work but I want to know at this point am I going to do more harm than good changing the filter and 5+ quarts? It's my dailyd and it seems to shift fine every day but sometimes clanks into 2nd.thanks in advance for your advice this has really been worrying me lately. Mw

  • nvm

  • if posible can you show a vid on where a rear wheel drive tranny shifting cable is

  • good job

  • you working like a backyard/driveway mechanic lol.

  • eric can you pimp my astro

  • @keabler77 I HATE working on Astro vans.

  • @EricTheCarGuy lol so do i. its a pain to do the heads on a vortec

  • @keabler77 Does he look like Xibit?

  • Looks to me like a 4L80E transmission

  • @Eric can u make a video changing valve cover gaskets on a 3800series2 Buick engine??

  • @TheAllday707 The videos I make are based on what comes into my shop so it's hard to fill requests like yours because I have to wait for the same car to show up with the same problem and I need time to shoot the video. That said if one does show up I'd be happy to try and make a video for you.

    Thanks for your request.

  • @TheAllday707, do you have an autozone where you live or another major parts dealer? we have an autozone where im from and if you get on their website they give detailed instructions on how to do things like that..

  • we were taught to use pig mats not rags due to the fact the any type of cloth will go through the trans and clog the filter and could ruin the the components i rebuilt about 5 4t60e transmissions in class everyone ran fine

  • @2000mitsueclipse Pig mats are AWESOME, I met those guys at the tool show last year and they make a great product. Thanks for the insight.

  • subscribers from Afghanistan..lol

  • @mattcasdorph I think it's pretty cool really, I love knowing that I'm being viewed 'internationally'.

  • @TJRMultimedia Awe you're too kind.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I hope you get hoi by a car you big fat greasy whitebitch.

  • its either a 4l60e or a 4l80e

  • @DualsMeatChevy94 I think it's a 80e, it's a big truck.

  • Hi Eric! I do have a 2003 BMW X5 4.4 with 120xxx miles do you think that I should change the transmission fluid on it BMW said "no" thanks Amigo !!!!

  • @javierr1blue Tough question, if it hasn't been changed in a long time it could cause the transmission to fail, you need to change transmission fluid on a regular basis for it to be effective, if not it's kind of a crap shoot.

  • You are a great guy.... car guy :)

  • hey man your videos are awesome, you obviosly know more about cars than GM does haha. one question though; my 96 camaro v6 with 89k on it is slow to engage forward or reverse when in nuetral or park. do you think this is caused by the AT filter that your replacing?

  • @xXHUNTERXxXx I would be checking the fluid level first and for any air in the fluid. If both of those things are good it could be an internal leak inside the transmission causing the pressure to bleed off, if this is the case you will need to replace or rebuild the transmission unfortunately.

  • Lmao u've got some noise in the background, 1st church bells, then at 12:47 u can hear some major tire screeching from a stuntman

  • @Bulgdoom Yea it's a busy intersection with a lot of 'not so fast but furious' drivers.

  • I've got an idea, when on the last bolt get one of those $5 fuel drain kits, put the hose in the pan, squeeze, let other end flow down in the pan, have beer until it all gets drained..

  • @Bulgdoom Cool tip, thanks for posting it.

  • The engineers could make a fluid that only needs to be run through an onboard, external microfilter. (aka. Amsoil bypass filter) Then, since the molecule chains would never break down, there would be no need to change fluid. Then, one could swim back and forth from Florida to the Cayman Isl. on a perpetual holiday, thus accumulating a covering of lampreys on the skin. The more lampreys, the more prestige.

  • @seapeddler It's not just contaminants, the fluid also breaks down because of heat. Interesting comment.

  • dipstick comments lol

  • Thanks so much for making these videos! I'm tired of paying a mechanic over $100 bucks each time to get this done. Your videos are helpful and informative!

  • @aggressivekoala I'm very happy to hear that I'm able to help you save some money, that's what ETCG is all about. Thanks for the comment.

  • hey eric i just did my yukins 4l60e it was an experience.fun and agrivating.had to dish out for torx bits no leaks so far.magnet was a round piece instead of the square in your vid,it was the size of a small donut full of crud.thanks for the vid

  • @PAMAROSHOUSE I'm glad the video helped it sounds like you didn't have too much trouble. Thanks for the update.

  • 4L80e

  • just what i needed.i have an 05 yukon.im going to do this soon, even if i dont get the converter fluid out and once i replace the filter and fluid the fluid in the torque conveter will get circulated and maybe do another filter change in a few miles again .it wont hurt right?

  • @PAMAROSHOUSE If you change the fluid on a regular basis then you don't need to worry about the stuff in the rest of the trans.

  • @EricTheCarGuy thanks.damn punks should of put a drain plug.wtf.

  • when your shifting between gears and feel it move every gear except one..what can be the problem? because i can feel every gear shift except the Reverse... and when i do go on Drive, the vehicle cant and wont drive over 30MPH ..will i need a new Transmission or do i just need a fluid service...the vehicle is not reversing at all.. please help

  • @pogisiG It's hard to say especially without knowing what kind of vehicle you have but many modern transmissions are electronically controlled so it could be an issue with the electronics OR it could be a mechanical issue. A transmission specialist is your best bet for figuring out which one you have in my opinion. Good luck.

  • Ericthecarguy, thanks for the great video. The information was very useful as I own a GM and want to do this same project. I wanted to know however, what about the oil that remains in the torque convertor after you drain the tranny? Isn't that of concern?

  • @Barnekkid Not if you change the fluid on a regular basis, the truth is that there is still about 5-7 quarts still in the trans when you do this. You could flush out all of the fluid with a professional machine or by using some 'home' remedy however I feel if you change the fluid according to the service manual recommendations it's not necessary to flush the fluid every time you change it.

  • what do you edit with?

  • @TheAstro30 FCP

  • @EricTheCarGuy you're pretty good with it :)

  • @ 19:37

    lmfao

    i love yah dude

    5 stars,favorite,playlisted

    BEST TEACHER EVERRR

  • @marsL001 Thanks man I really appreciate it.

  • Good video Eric, I just dropped the pan out of my 2000 suburban...its such a good time! If you call a GM parts shop with the last 8 digits of the VIN code, they can tell you 100% which trans, engine, gaskets, etc. you will need. Usually the GM gasket is reusable or you can get a GM reusable for a few bucks more than a NAPA or other after market. Keep up the great videos!

  • @darknes7800 Yea, I wish I had reused the original gasket that would have been much better. Thanks for your input and for your comment.

  • hey eric, cool vid. I have a 1991 integra gs with b20b swap. the bottom of my tranny has a whole and is leaking tranny fluid. Should i find somone to weld or replace entire tranny, i can see the gear through the whole. Car seems to shift fine, a little more rough now though.

  • @christianbaclao You don't normally 'weld' aluminum, your probably looking at replacing the trans or the outer case depending on your situation.

  • @EricTheCarGuy ok thanks, yeah I will probably replace the transmission with a better one from craigslist. My current one sucks at shifting from 1st to 2nd and grinds horribly in reverse. Might as well replace it if I have to rebuild it. Currently reading up on replacing transmissions on forums, do you have any videos related to this? Thanks for the reply.

  • @christianbaclao I have a clutch video for sale on my website for the Acura Integra if that helps, it has a step by step on how to remove the trans.

  • @EricTheCarGuy thanks ill check it out

  • gms and dodges are famous for not having drain plugs, what i do is crack every bolt free around the pan like two or three turns its up to you to judge, then loosen a like 3 or 4 bolts on one corner depending on the number and spacing and drain as much out as i can get in that corner then loosen and gently lower the now half emptied pan

  • @reap62 Excellent tip, thanks for posting.

  • you should of reused the OEM gasket.. way better than aftermarket.

  • @chevygirl2628 I agree. Thanks for the comment.

  • you remind me of my auto school instructor. funny guy

  • how would you change that seal you left in the hole? what method would you use to take it out?

  • @nico27004 Seal puller and probably install with a plastic hammer.

  • would this almost be the same for a 99 suburban

  • @279spirit Extremely close if not the same.

  • Sooo glad my pan has a drain plug. Otherwise those 4 drains and refills would have been much more time consuming.

  • @xylenol15 That is a huge help isn't it?

  • Comment removed

  • Definitely, especially since the drain pan was a nice solid plate of steel and holding it in place while trying to get the bolts to catch was more difficult than I had thought it would be. Also, two of the bolts would tighten and then spin loosely again, no idea why. Fortunately the bolts on either side took and it hasn't leaked, so I called things settled for the next 30,000 miles...anyway, your videos are the best!

  • hey Eric, that info was veeery helpful, as im about to embark on my own journey of changing the tranny fluid on my f150. now i'v had this truck fer around 3k miles. and i suspect the previous owner never changed the tranny fluid. because it is shifting late, and hard. but usually its the worst when its hot. so im gonna change my fluid and filter an what not. but i wana get ALL the fluid out. how would 1 go about with a flush? i dont wana use any solvents though, i wana flush it with tranny fluid

  • @tecumsehmike1 also, can you tell me how to get it out of the torque converter? thanks

  • @tecumsehmike1 Careful, if you are already having transmission issues then changing the transmission fluid may finish it off especially if it hasn't been changed in a while. I would recommend just changing the fluid like in this video and not worrying about getting it ALL out as you may have to replace it in the end anyway unfortunately and this way you won't have a bunch tied up in trans fluid. If you want to get it all I would recommend having a shop do it with a flush machine.

  • @EricTheCarGuy hey Eric i got a 2002 Hyundai sonata with 190,000 miles on it and the tranny tends to shift fairly poor i don't believe the transmission fluid was changed would you recommend changing it and it's filter?

  • I work for a bus company...and we drive the short buses, which are big orange (or yellow) chevy vans. And I can say that those dipsticks are a pain to check everyday. Awesome vid btw.

  • @Dewhosoever At least you check them, I know some that wouldn't. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I do, as well a few select drivers. Then there are those other drivers who check the transmission cold and check the oil level with it running. The guys in the shop are surprised they haven't had a bunch of blown motors yet.

  • what about suck it out with the tube?i respect you but this video is not like for usa.but for afghanistan stupid lowlife?i hated the fucking expert village guy name what ever the fuck his name is.i like you better than him.but end of the story.MR scotty kilmer is the best. but any way.i thank you you ERIC.

  • what about suck it out with the tube?i respect you but this video is not like for usa.but for afghanistan stupid lowlife?

  • @kevinle692005 That is another way to do it yes but I'm confused are you calling me a stupid lowlife?

  • I'm really appreciated for your helpful video .. Many greetings from Iraq :)

  • @freezone75 Hello Iraq! Your most welcome, thanks for the comment.

  • U lost your hat and hair!lol!nice vid thoe.

  • @joshane123 Happens to the best of us. Thanks for the comment.

  • i just did this on a 2003 chevy avalanche and it seems chevy goes out of there way to make it a pain in the ass to put things in the way so you cant get your pan off, i had to use a c clamp to hold the gear changing mount to get the pan off, the other thing that was in the way was the exaust pipe.

  • @matzpimp Yea some days are better than others when it comes to automotive service. Thanks for the comment.

  • hey bro... i have a 04 impala and its a frontwheel trans...is it the same thing??? my trans is slipping

  • @CaMaRo1RoC89 Sort of. If your trans is slipping however changing the fluid may not help.

  • @EricTheCarGuy true but im just trying to throw some trans oil away so i can put in a bottle of lucas anti slip in there... just till i save up for another trans

  • Eric, I have 34,000 on my 2009 Accord and I think the dealer changed it with Dextron 3. Should I get it changed to Honda fluid?

  • @NETWizzJbirk If you got it done at the dealer it should be DW1 not Dextron, I would be very surprised if they used dextron.

  • Wow... that dip stick is long. I think the other end checks the fluid in an adjacent car :-)

  • @NETWizzJbirk Your probably right. Thanks for the comment.

  • Actually, I know its not the correct way of doing things, but I've never had a problem removing fluid from a tranny by using a soap pump and some airline tubing from the pets department for fish, snaking it into the tranny and pumping out the excess. Any thoughts on pulling fluid this way?

  • @CDDYoakashi They actually make a tool that does that same thing, you made your own so you deserve cool points for that.

  • eric

got a 2002 yukon denali to do this weekend wondering if you could give me some advice on changing the fluid and filter

  • @gentrafication It's all in the video, in fact it's probably the same transmission as in this video.

  • thanks your the man

it was exact and yes got a face full of tranny fluid

when are you gonna do one on power steering ?

  • ive done this already but would it be bad thing to use all purpose grease to just hold the gasket in place while securing the pan back to the trans?

  • @rovero Not really but it also wouldn't help the gasket seal very well, in fact it might cause it to leak.

  • dont know too much about transmission but wouldn't there be fluid still in the lines??

  • @13MrTravioso Yea there is still a lot of fluid in the transmission, you are only changing about half of it using this method, if you do this on a regular basis thought it's all you really need to do in most cases.

  • I have a cadillac catera. I was wondering if you knew where to check the fluid on that. I know it's under the car.

  • @JoeCnNd To be honest I don't know, but on some of those transmissions there is a special procedure that needs to be followed to check and top off the fluid as there is no traditional dip stick.

  • Love your videos very informative! But don't you feel like a magician, giving away his secrets?

  • @SilentlyCreeping Nope, I don't make my living as a technician any more I teach all of you.

  • Eric, we should go pick up some hot babes, take them back to my place and fuck the shit right out of them!

  • @valleystylez Sounds like fun but I don't think my wife would be too happy about that. :)

  • use a "seal puller" to remove the o ring at 9:20. i used a screw driver and put a small scratch in the hole. it was next to impossible to remove that gasket. i found out about this tool just now by googling "remove transmission filter gasket". next time i change my trans fluid, im going to get this tool. i wont need it until 250,000 miles though. =D

  • @AGreedyTree Great info, thanks for posting.

  • easier way that i have seen i'm no mechanic or technician at all. On a video there was a guy that used a break bleeding hand pump and plastic hoses to pump oil out of the transmission into a mason jar.

  • @baller979 They also make a tool that does that same thing. I'm actually a fan of the professional machines that remove and replace the fluid, they make life very easy. Thanks for the comment.

  • Hey ERIC!!! Just wanted to let you know that a few months ago (Jan 2011) I worked on my car. Got my transmission fulid and filter changed on my '96 Toyota Avalon. And your video was extremely helpful and without your video I def would not have been able to do it. I am not an experienced car guy. But I was still able to get the job done... THANKS TO YOU, And i took my time cleaning the crap out of the pan, and the magnet.

THANK YOU AGAIN. Just wanted to let you know that you are truly Awesome.

  • @datprius These are my favorite comments by far, thanks for posting.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Next up, Changing my brakes on my Acura. Front and Back. Ive see your brake video atleast 10 times by now. lol.

  • It was my understanding that 4L60E are usually found in 1/2 tons 4L80E are usually found in 3/4 or 1 tons.

  • @84W150 I'm not a GM expert but I believe you are correct.

  • eh hope thats not a dextron 6 tranny cause dex/merc doesnt work in Dex 3/6 vehicles well my GM 2500 truck for instance

  • @GMCownsall It's not but thanks for the tip.

  • Your not a dork. Thanks for the vid. That helped.

  • Your not a dork. Thanks for the vid. That helped. Of course, I already dropped my pan, cleaned the wire filter, repalced the gasket, and really was trying to decide if there was enough fluid held in the torque converter to justify spending $255 at the dealer (Nissan) for a complete fluid flush.

  • @shanintia If you change the fluid about every 30 or 60K there really should be no need to get the fluid out of the torque converter. Thanks for the comment.

  • It's not the size of your dipstick it's how you use it i guess. LMFAO you crack me up

  • wow!lol great vid all the same!

  • @BigPython1986 Thanks.

  • hey eric...great vids. i have a 1977 caprice with a th-350 gm trans. ive done just like the video but still get leaks...i havent used a torque wrench but rather just snugged the fasteners up hand tight. it wont start leaking til i drive it a couple days. all surfaces cleaned and just a few dots of RTV. is there a better gasket i could get like the factory one in this vid? or should i just try a torque wrench? maybe i dont know my own strength...lol much appreciated bro...stay dirty!

  • @Biothumper79 The factory gasket is way better than the one in this vid, also be sure the leak is coming from that gasket and not somewhere else as the fluid can travel quite a bit and make you think it's leaking somewhere it's not.

  • @EricTheCarGuy ....OK I took off and looked at the old pan and it was a lil warped...aslo i have a aftermarket dipstick and am not sure if i need a rubber o-ring where it slides into the trans. looks like its also leaking there...any ideas? much appreciated bro...

  • @Biothumper79 Normally dip sticks are sealed with 'o' rings so that might very well be the case. Good luck.

  • So, I have heard many different answers and I am confused. My car is a 1993 Lincoln Town Car, 4.6L V8, Overhead Cam, with 99,120 miles. I want to switch it from conventional to synthetic. Some people say it is good for the car, others say that the cleaning that the synthetic will do all at once will ruin the engine. I'm confused and just just wanna do the best for my car.

  • @boyce12091 Synthetics have a different flow characteristics than conventional oil. I've seen people switch to synthetic at high mileage and as a result they start to see a lot of oil leaks. If you really want to switch you should be able to but I don't think you will see too much of a gain by doing so but you may see more oil leaks.

  • you forgot the torque converter...

  • @equipmentdoc1 ??? Ummm you sort of have to remove the transmission to get to that, if your just changing the fluid I don't believe that's necessary. If you meant that I didn't drain the torque converter to be honest if you do this regularly you really don't have to worry about it.

  • hey eric, new subscriber and i cant see a pan on my 92 dodge 150d. I get some grinding when i shift to third gear and i suspect its the transmission filter? it doesnt happen all the time. great videos by the way.

  • @miguelr44 If it's a manual it won't have a pan. It could be a problem with shift linkage or an internal problem inside the transmission.

  • my seal for my transmission filter is worn and im having trouble gettingthe metal portion out, any ideas?

  • @seantwiggs Well not knowing what kind of car your working on makes it hard to know but make sure there aren't other fasteners holding the filter in.

  • In your video you mention to be very careful not to overfill as you'll have to drop the pan and start over. When I do bone head moves like that I just snake some new tubing down the fill tube and draw it out with a hand pump or 5cc syringe.

Thanks for posting the videos and stay dirty.

  • @kfrancis09 I actually think there is a kit that does that too. Thanks for the comment.

  • Eric, you should make a video on how to flush an engine's cooling system.

  • @DBGuallpa If I'm honest I'm not a fan of that, I prefer changing it on a regular basis with good coolant that way flushing is not necessary. The only flushing I like to do is with a coolant flush machine, putting the 'T' into the cooling system just makes another place for it to leak.

  • @EricTheCarGuy You are the professional

  • shit your funny man crack me up eric lol!!!! hey can you do a vid on changing engine mount on a rear wheel drive not front wheel like buick engine v6 3800 gm or sumthing like cheers !!!:)

  • What about all the fluid in the torque converter?

  • @MrMK94 You never get all the fluid out when you do a drain and refill, to get all the fluid out requires multiple changes or the use of a flush machine. Normally a drain and refill at regular intervals is all that is required however.

  • hey eric you in ohio at all???lol

  • @fastvpbt1 My shop is in Cincinnati.

  • hey eric me again at 7.28 minutes reminds me of my missues squirting like that funny huh lol cheers !:)

  • @fastvpbt1 I could make a comment here but I'm going to keep it to myself, thanks for your comment though.

  • Hey Eric, I changed my transmission fluid and filter today and now I hear this grinding type of noise when revving the engine a little bit and when accelerating. Plus I forgot to put the 3 magnet pieces back in the pan. Are the magnets a MUST in the pan?? And what could be causing the grinding noise??

  • @patrickm993 You really should put the magnets back in as they help keep metal debris from contaminating the trans. As for the noise it's hard to say but if it happened after you did the work you want to go back and check all of your work to make sure you didn't accidentally cause the problem.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Ok I drove the car today and I didn't hear any grinding noise.

I think... I might have lost the magnets. Hopefully they're available at any parts store. If I were to drop the pan again, do I have to change the filter and gasket??

And when I checked the fluid level, the dipstick wouldn't go in all the way. It goes in about 90% of the way then it just stops. I didn't want to force it in to be safe. What could be the problem??

Sorry if I'm asking so many questions.

  • @patrickm993 As for the magnets I'm not sure if you will be able to find them but you might be able to try a different one if the clearance is good. The dipstick and the noise concern me however, try twisting it 90º and then inserting it, if it still doesn't go in you should look into the cause as broken metal parts in the trans is never a good thing.

  • Awesome vid my good man!

    I recently replaced the trany fluid/filter in my 5.0L 92 F150 4x4, auto w/ overdrive.

I found it was much easier to drain the fluid if you (carefully) drill a small hole in your pan first and use the hole to screw a drain plug into afterwards. (I used a random, coarse thread stubby bolt from the bottom of my 'goody' jar)

    Personal preference i suppose :D

    Keep up the good work!

  • @Deano080 Yea make your own drain bolt, good idea, thanks for the tip.

  • Wow. superior USA engineering. Why can't they put the trans code on the VIN tag attached to the firewall?

  • @CybershulDotCom and a drain plug? All Japanese vehicles have this.
