I feel a lot of people would think of this as 'too fast' because the version used in Shawshank Redeption is very slow. Must admit, I though this was a bit too fast, until I realized I was tingling all over. Then I realized the exact speed doesn't matter.

This is completely lovely! Lovely tempo.Just right. It is beautifully choreographed and the relationship between the Countess and her maidservant is beautifully sketched.Also it avoids high-camp farce and allows Mozarts characters their rightful dignity even though they are endearingly fallible.

You have to admit this version keeps the essence of opera, both dramatical preformance and vocal expression. Also carefully casting the singers, especially female reformers. Their voices have a surprising uniformity. Just listen to the chorus parts.

This is my favorite production of Figaro. It has just the right mood, has good acting and lots of movement (which was not emphasized that much 18 years ago), has the most wonderful Sussana paired with the young Terfel and Gilfry, and snappy conducting by Gardiner.
