  • One of my favorites

  • I saw the american premier of this film. Svankmajer was there! I met him! I'm very proud of that.

  • and this crazy country got the world cup bid for 2018?!?!?! WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK!!

  • @big0fat0banana

Everything is theft in one form or another. It's when conveying the same message on and on, that we see, and we still know it

  • I am not the professional on the subject... but I have come to the belief that Burton was actually inspired by Ray Harryhausen when it came to stop motion; ever since he was a child. I think the surrealist view on the stop motion technique came from Svankmajer. But Harryhausen might have been the sole inspiration for Burton.

And I find it humorous how nobody understands that an original idea is guaranteed to be "stolen" or adapted to one's own view on another subject.

  • @StacyIsWatchingYou It's an American perspective -- Americans tend to think the most important attribute to define good art is "originality" -- which is esteemed as one component among others, in other artistic cultures, but not any more than recognizing one's place in a line of tradition and adding to it, increasing the wealth but not laying solo claim to it. That word "derivative" is the worst insult a critic can give you in American criticism. So stupid and self-absorbed culturally.

  • This is a great film!

  • This is a great film, definitely recommended!

  • remarkable, but really messed up

  • I have NO idea wtf they are saying but I don't care this guy's mind is as crazy as I am I love his work!

  • Couldnt be better than Faust, could it?

  • I thought it was excellent. Not too much stop frame but great story and the aesthetics are like so horrid and great i loved it

  • its reallly close isnt it?

  • Yes, but my man Faust takes the cake. Faust is just more dreamlike and psychological. Lunacy is a bit more on the artsy side with religious overtones. Lets give it up for Svankmajer's head cabinet.

  • I always love how he can manage to tie up all the loose ends of his films, that was one thing i realy loved about Lunacy-

And Faust is dreamlike, there really arent any other films out there like that at all,

the recently stopped producing DVD's of Faust too, new copies fetch about 75$ on Amazon

  • You know the funny thing about faust was the first time I watched it I hated/did not understand it and put in on my shelf for about a year. A person can change so much in just one year as I came back to faust early one morning after a long night and watched old faustus again and again and again, I mean it got better every time i watched it. I love who I am becoming. Great conversing with another Svankmyster fan take care zathusura.

  • to co je za des?

  • isnt martin huba slovak ?

  • yes, he is slovak

  • Skvělý film

  • If only I could find an English translation, it looks very nice.

  • The fool is the one who thinks that he's doing random actions when presumably doing random actions.

  • surrealism isnt randomn shit.you are disgustingly ignorant.same goes for whoever called it pretentious.

  • lol, internet

  • It's just so pretentious.

  • at the start of the movie he clearly says: that the film is not art

  • 1st: But it is. That is a joke.

2nd: Surrealism is never random, the images might look random, cos they atempt to be a mix that come from the unconscious mind. Conscious can decifer the meanings of those relations (you must have a bit of brain to seek symbolisms). This movie isnt as surreal as other stuff from him, but it does say a lot. Watch it. He uses surrealim as a tool to remark some points in the story that in fact is no very difficult to understand. The animations are used as metaphors

  • Svankmajer is from Czechoslovakia (as well as me), and his work is strongly affected by political system in here. So if you have a lack of information about this system and life in Czechoslovakia, you simply won´t understand his work. It´s not your fault, it´s just how it is.

  • And you call it Czechoslovakia, even though its now czech republic.

  • yeah, I know. It´s just because most foreign people still don´t know what or where it is when I´m talking about Czech republic or Slovakia...even after 15 years.

  • yes we do!

  • Watched the film tonight and it was splendidly terrible! One that I hope Changes me!

  • i just discovered this guy. i'm amazed, to say the least.

  • does someone know the music?

  • I abslolutely love this film!

  • one of the best film ever, masterpiece!!!!!

  • Is this the official trailer? Should I translate it?

  • I hate to break it to you, but Jan Svankmajer is the major inspiration behind Burton's claymation.

  • You don't know what you are talking about, fool!

Nothing against Burton, but this man does this for more than forty years! And Burton, Terry Gilliam and many others have much to thank him for!

  • Without Svankmajer there is no Burton....only sand and fog.

  • who are sand and fog?

  • Meaning without one the other would just fade...

  • Comment removed

Can't wait to see this though.

  • I can if you are still interested!

  • please!

  • I will, but it will take few days!

  • Actually, it is not difficult, but I don't have much time.

  • I'll be seeing this movie in two days at our independant film and video festival in Victoria BC. Maybe I'll post a review...?

  • I MUST SEE THIS. period end.

  • Haha, this is great, too bad I still haven't got the chance to see it.
