it's true for trucks with a 10 or 14 speed transmission, but for cars or vans with a 5 or 6 speed transmission, 1500rpm 6gear 100kmh,put your foot down , almost nothing....
get in to 4th, 3000rpm, then you get some acceleration
@weebl15 Nonsense. Go learn about power and gearing.
The great advantage of the high torque from a turbodiesel engine is in how it allows much easier starting and low speed hill climbing (...and hill starts) with heavy loads. If you want decent acceleration and top speed out of it you're still going to have to go up to higher revs, particularly as changing up a gear drops your rpms anyway - and more so in the lower gears. Unless it's been specifically detuned, it'll be faster at 4000 than 2000.
Standard Crafter 2.5TDI gets 80kW at 3500rpm, and 280Nm at 1900rpm. The latter figure translates to approx 55kW. Without going into the gory details of how it all works, that means once you're past the point of moving off from a standstill in first gear, you'll have an extra 44% acceleration at 3500 than at 1900. Given how the power curve falls off somewhat more at low rpms with a turbodiesel, this difference is probably *greater* when comparing 4000 to 1400.
At the SAME ROAD SPEED you'll get 44% more acceleration at 3500rpm.
In the SAME GEAR, you'll get 28% more acceleration at 1900 instead (as 80kW @ 3500 approx = 220Nm)... BUT, only when going at 55% of the road speed.
What power is all about, is maintaining the same forwards accelerative force at higher system output (road) speeds. There's no point in huge thrust alone if it's all gone by 30km/h - better to pair it with slightly less thrust maintained thru to 120km/h.
@TahreyUK I never stated you don't get faster acceleration. Just that it's a waste of fuel going above 3000 rpms in these crafters because the difference in acceleration is not that big. Of course this guy probably doesn't drive like this daily. I drive a sprinter myself, going above 3000 rpm feels so harsh on it :P.
On top of that, this one is claimed to have 126kW, or more than 50% extra horsepower than standard. It's possible that this could be a VW-issued high-tune version with the torque/power peaks at similar rpms, but there's a good job it's a custom remap. In which case the peak power - and point of best acceleration (which you want to rev PAST before upshifting) - has almost certainly shifted to slightly higher rpms (3600, 3750, maybe even 4k), & the peak torque might have too.

@Juliancool2005 Yes, 3000+ rpm is not neccesary on diesel engine. Diesel engine torque from like 1400 rpm!
You won't gain much faster acceleration if you go high rpms, only more fuel consumption.
