  • Now that's what I call playing the trap....

  • wasn't video invented in the 1930s?

  • @cuzinstyle NO

  • Really cool seeing people from so long ago...

  • Back in the good old days before curved sticks and dicks like Pronger.

  • I didn't saw a fight, that's not hockey.

  • Go Blue Jackets! ;)

  • It looked to me as though black needed to be penalized for too many men on the ice!

  • I love this generations respect, you are all assholes!!

  • damn they suck

  • I think that is Mark Messier, he was a teenager back then.

  • These guys would murder the islanders.

  • too bad this is the future of finnish hockey...

  • that one guy in the black at the start, definitely has to be Dion Phaneuf. He just stands there and lets every player in the white go around him

  • Chris Chelios' rookie year.

  • I like the coaching strategy, "Everybody get in there and HIT the puck with your stick. EVERYBODY!!!"

  • Looks like a leafs vs isles game.

  • looks like the MSG ice...

  • @koivu2k1 piss off your not funny

    GO RANGERS

  • This reminds me of 6 year olds playing hockey accept they are not all falling down.

  • The good ol' days before the instigator rule.

  • this doesnt look that old... 1898 HQ

  • they all dead now

  • THAT IS COOL!!

  • This probably is the oldest known film fopotage of a hockey game,.

    Looks more like a "scrum".

  • Wasn't hockey polite back in the day? LOL

  • Wheres the fights?

  • lol

  • 1898? weird and rare. when were the first video recording stuff made in and what was the first video recorded?

  • @louisEX2 the first camaras were created 1888

  • Isn't that Chris Chelios with the hat ?

  • LMAO

  • don't be silly.... that was chelly's sons

    lol!

  • @GTate888 That was a good one!

  • i believe this to be fake.i have antique skates and they are all strap on to your shoes type,no boot type in 1898

  • Looks like drunk pick up hockey

  • I think its safe to say, This film is cool and gives me chills. lol

  • They look like this year's Maple Leafs

  • lol dude ur right about that

  • Yeah, whoever said that "keeping your head up" is the number one rule in hockey must not have meant it was the first rule.

  • watch it boy

  • This is very cool footage

  • hah they all have way to short of sticks, very cool footage

  • This footage is fascinating. The date could be correct, too, since the motion picture camera was developed in the 1880s according to Wikipedia.

  • But Thomas "Tommy" Edison was Homer Simpson's hero, Jptoutant.

    Incredibly fascinating footage! 'Nuff said.

  • fuck edisson !! great image:O

  • yes in this time there was radio .

  • This was before radio...radio was not invented until the mid 1920's. This is a silent film from the days when movie theaters were a place for more than feature-length movies.

  • i looked it up and the 1st ever radio soled too the public was in (1888) and dont get me wrong about this i looked it up so there was radio in this time .

  • The first TV did not appear in front of the public until 1939.

  • that is right .

  • What an absolutely fascinating piece of footage.

One thing amateur hockey fans don't realize is that before 1900, the standard faceoff involved the ref actually PLACING the puck on the ice, instead of dropping it.

  • and you could only pass backwards like in rugby

  • They could probably beat Los Angeles

  • looks a lot like Dovercourt the other night :)

  • wow, that's incredible. ice hockey in 1898.
