  • In-class and this video was great, it really provided a lot of incite into how different cultures act in business settings and what to be sensitive too. It inspires me to learn more about the vast cultures that represent Canada and how I can be most effective in the workplace.

  • Working in retail I often find myself trying to communicate with people of different cultures. Some of whom do not speak English as their first language. I am certainly guilty of speaking too quickly or softly and end up having to repeat myself and enunciate more clearly while speaking louder. When I first start working, this was a problem I encountered far too often. Now I try to be more careful, not to speak to quickly of softly in order to ensure better communication.

  • I find this very interesting, I'm a nigerian(raised Canadian tho) and whenever Im around my folks, I have to make a very conscious effort to be culturally sensitive with things that I say(very important) and body language interaction just so we can get along. The same applies for marketing and business, in order to be profitable one must understand and respect certain aspects of others culture. O yes, please don't go to Japan and talk about the atomic bomb, lol.

  • I found this clip really help in real world we live in. The tips provide from this video are common knowledge that we tend to ignore or forget most of time. Speak clearly, respect to various cultures, understand and be able to interpret with people from different background is now the key to success in the global business environment.

  • in my opinion, it is really important to know about different culture. therefore, we can make money base on that knowing. Also, language is one of the barrier we need to consider in order to do the business correctly, make sure we dont use the wrong words or translation. for example, in French, toilet means perfume, but in Vietnamese, it means washroom or sink, Anh Quoc Nguyen MRK460, Jan 2012

  • @anhquocnguyen017 Umm.. ma cher, en français toilette veut dire toilette et perfume c'est du perfume aucun relation avec la toilette(lol).

  • Very true. People usually tend to speak new languages at the same pace/speed as their native language.

  • Yes it is different to do marketing in other countries, one thing i think need to add in is, KNOWING THEIR BEHAVIOR, some countries read things from right to left, so for example, if post an billboard ad or magazine ad, make sure people read the right way. another is, even marketing without translation, there still hundreds of hamlet in different readers' view. this video is very helpful that as a multicultural marketer, be careful communicating with people in other countries.

  • Canada is known for being multicultural, so we should take more consideration into how we talk, what we say, and the slang we use. To effective do business with Canadians, you should talk clearly and slowly, avoid the use of slang and use more proper terms. Also, respect culture's, and research some simple traditions to avoid doing something that they may consider disrespectful.

  • For this video, I learned that, whenever you talk to someone that comes from a different background, you would have to be very specific in terms of what you say so that this would avoid a ton of confusion. Also, I would need to avoid using English slang terms and talk properly in proper terms so that this individual would understand and be more interested in what I would say.

  • This video is very helpful because you may offend people when you didn't understand their culture. In Canada, this kind of issue seems like more severely because of the strong global competition. In fact, if you have more tips of dealing with different culture people, you will have more opportunities to be successful in the business.

  • Use different ways in different business situation are very important, it directs effect the business success or not. In Canada, I think the first important thing is to use appropriate language skills to talk with people who came from different cultures, people always like the way they feel comfortable to communicate. • When my family and I moved to Canada 7 years ago, I specifically remember my parents having trouble with the English language on basis that you mentioned in this video. My dad complained to me that everyone spoke too quickly and that he did not understand what "What's up" meant. The points you outlined in the video are extremely important because sometimes it is difficult to stop and think about being considerate towards other cultures.

  • "English is not a pure language"

I remember watching a video a few days ago that related to the hiring of new immigrants. The interviewees/managers were extremely unprofessional, unclear, and assumptive. I think we think we know everything.

  • This is very helpful, firstly because it is easily to offend someone from a different cultural background. Not everyone views the world as you do, so when understanding different cultures you can easily adapt to the different environments you may find yourself in. The comment on using slang, was very interesting, because when speaking like that you don't really think about how it may come off to others and you assume everyone knows what you are talking about.

  • One of the best things you can do is be prepared. By understanding the culture you can make appropriate decisions on how to interact without being offense and avoid any misinterpretations during communications!

  • Slow down, but don't be too slow! Canadians who are too overly cognizant of these social-cultural considerations may also come across as arrogant. On my 1st work-term, a colleague of mine was communicating with India's Morgan Stanley branch. He spoke very slowly and occasionally took pauses to ensure the counter party was up to speed, but instead of being appreciative, the individual hung up as they were offended and said "I understand english buddy"

  • My girlfriend just flew over to Canada about a month ago and she is attending a language school in Toronto trying to learn English. She found it very difficult to understand not because the material was hard, but because the teachers were speaking too fast. I found out from my experience and from the video that simple things like talking slow and avoiding slangs when in conversation with people from another country can be much more important and affective than what we think. • its crazy how we overlook the simple task of speaking English. however it is important to come to the understanding of how to slow down and build communication skills that allow us to communicate effectively and making it easy for other people who happen to not be as familiar with the English language as we are to understand it - Anil S.
