The MI-24 was a great idea in concept but the Russians never could get it to do what it was meant to do. It was simply too heavy, with a full load of troops and their gear, it could actually make it's rotors fail if it tried to do a sharp bank. In Afghanistan, the MI-24 was often flown with the passenger compartment armor removed to save weight, and the troops were carried in a dedicated transport.
@Elthenar I've got a book you can read involving the subject, despite it's deficiencies when fully loaded it was still used quite a bit as a troop transport.
@TheKvant1 If there was a way for me to read that book, I would. I've never been afraid of reading.
The Hind WAS used fully loaded quite a bit. It was after a bit of experience that they moved away from it, using the Hind as a dedicated gunship and carrying troops in a dedicated transport chopper. The Hind suffered from a problem that the US sometimes runs into, they tried to make it do too much.
@Elthenar yea but it can do all that stuff the only problem that the hind has is the lack of maneobrability no choper can move that amount of firepower and mans to the batlefield

why would u want to shoot down such a pretty bird? the people that claim the mil-24 is ugly are completely wrong. its one of the few designs that is more than just pure engineering...
it seriously makes me sad that the russian gov. is fasing out the 24's for 28's... which are essentially just apache copies.

@SpikeS1732, me too feel betrayed by the Russians phasing it out following the American lead doing away with the Huey. A helicopter out to be a dual duty aircraft because of its ability to operate so well as both.
@demon515 hey, you are wrong, after stingers, russians got low tactic fly with combine of upgrading to heat cover for engine and fire sparkles :) , they become unreachable. hehehe
USSR is not the question, this is only about this bird functionality, I don't know why you americans so psycho-naive, you take one matter to another. There are some good feature in that helicopter, and bad, afgan war just make the good thing for it.
If you want to go to USSR matter, I am from that era, and I am very happy there is no place for that communistic regime, so many people were killed durring the USSR just citizens, but I am very proud of my origin
I was just pointing out fact that the Hind was still shot down after they modified it and lost the war because the US gave the Mujahideen stinger missiles to shot them down.
@dmanator111 Well it was very feared by them till the Americans, Chinese and other western countries started supplying the mudjahedeen with SA-9 SAMs and Stinger missiles. Then that kind of killed the hinds fear inducing reputation. I mean Im sure it wan not fun to have to see and hear one of these things coming but it made it easier to take on. The Russian choppers and low flying jet bombers had to fly higher after sams were introduced which limited the effect of the bombs and missiles accuracy
@wulfshelmut The biggest myth of a modern warfare. During all the Afghan conflict a Soviet airforce and Rosvertol company - a Mi-24 maker has registered 563 manpad launches (non only Stingers) at Hinds with only 89 hits. 43 Hinds are damaged, including 18 shotdowns. Most of them suffered to combined attacks of Stingers, artillery and rifle fire. Only 2 are lost to a single manpad shot.
70% losses are during a late 86 - earlier 87. They were eager with contermeasures.
Well as much as i love it and i do beleive it is a VERY effective aircraft. It did have a few problems. All of these have been seen to, and there has actually been a few new versions of the Hind made to adapt it to night operations and many other roles. But this capacity for modifications and just it's toughness and ability to adapt only proves your point that it is a remarkable bird indeed. there's a reason they named it the Devil's Chariot.
If there was an alien invasion, and we had ground battles with them, and I could choose to call in gunship support from USA or Russian forces, I would call in Hinds any day of the week. Just saying.
The only thing i like about this helo is the skin i heard the armors pretty thick , what brings it down is that its so heavy it needs a run way to take off
That happened only in Afghanistan, where the air is thin, and the choppers equipped with too many weapons. But its really hard to kill the HIND. I heard one of them shoot down in Afghanistan by RPG7(?) while floating, the helo goes down and hit the ground, but the crew able to immediate restart it, and fly home the crased bird.
Where did you get that from ? (link) i dont buy that . Id have to see pictures of the damaged aircraft & solid proof. Russians gov say alott of things that arent true
@IBANEZROCKERRR he said truth, i confirm. Hind came back to base after direct hit by RPG missile into... ENGINE! And it wasn't some single lucky episode, such things happened more than once. Can't give you photos(80s, you understand), but many of them are described in pilots memoirs. Will try to find some in English.
Few more facts about Hind survivability in next comment.
@IBANEZROCKERRR Hinds survivability. During soviet campaign in Afganistan rebels fired 563 "Stinger" missiles to Hinds. 89 hits totally. 18 helis lost, 43 damaged. 31 by single hit(22 returned to base, 9 successfully landed). 12 by two or more hits: 7 returned, 5 landed.
Impressive, huh? 563 shots from modern(at that time) AA complex and just 18 Hinds lost. I'm not talking about old "Red Eye" :) In 1984 Mi-24V got 5 direct hits by "Red Eye" missiles and came home easily :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Big and slow, the stinger missile take these guys out like the wind. Russians tried them for 15 years in Afgan war, once US supplied Taliban with stingers the Russians didn't stand a chance.
I wouldn't call a top speed of 200+ mph slow. It's faster than any American attack helicopter. Almost any helicopter can be slaughtered by a stinger, but if you're looking at a helicopter that can be easily shot down, look at the Black Hawk. Sure the expensive state of the art stinger can shoot down a Mil Mi 24, but all you need is a few dirt cheap RPG's to shoot down a Black Hawk.
The Hinds were equiped with detection systems along with flares after americans gave stingers to afghans so iwoundn't be worry 'bout stingers anymore.
Oh I love the Crocodile. This is just one mean ugly chopper. The thing is built for one thing.. distruction. The design just looks so evil... like it killed its mother after being born lol. I dont konw Im just blabbing.. but this copper has its huge flaws! It was a nice try though for the soviets to combine two types of frames into one chopper. Dham mean and ugly crocodile, love it!
The cobra was designed for Close Air support only. The Hind was made for a variety of roles. Your comparing aircraft from two different classifications.
The Hind could be used for close air support. In fact, it was close air support, anti-armor, and a troop carrier all in one unwieldy package. Its not a good helicopter for any of the above mentioned roles. Its too big and slow to be effective against any kind of organized defenses. Its extremely hot exhaust makes it an easy target for handheld heat seeking missiles making its combat survivability so low that it is useless to carry troops in. But it sure looks mean.
Sure, i agree, "Cobra" is smaller than "Hind. But only 25 shots from "Strela-1M"(SA-7 Grail) = 18 "Cobra's" down during 1972. 563 shots from "Stinger" = 18 Hinds down in Afganistan. Sure, Cobra is better than Hind :D
Lol once M1A1 got destroyed by 14,7-mm machuinegun lol
Stinger wasn't so dangerous for hinds as heavy machineguns. Stinger's chance to hit a target 30%, now plus there flares, dodges and pilot's hints, and you will got around 3-5% chance to stinger to shoot down heli
Awesome ground hugging in 6.05. The MI35 showed the world what a powerful weapon it is in Sri Lanka's terrorist war. Congratulations Russia for this awesome machine !. Best regards from the 8th Squadron, Sri Lanka Air Force.
It would have a much higher combat effectiveness if it could perform the role of a rotary winged aircraft fully loaded but it can't, it has to run up to lift off when fully loaded. Also it is ill conceived to try to make a heli fill the role of gun ship and troop carrier. It's not worth the loss of performance on both ends. The Hinds is well engineered and built but it's a victim of logistical failure.
nice, if you're going to give me a poor rating at least have the decency of telling me where I'm wrong. Aviation is kind of my thing and if there's something I'm misinformed about I would like to know. I'm not putting it down for nationality like everybody else does on BOTH sides. Just giving the facts I know.
Bottom line is the chopper can be very effective in certain situations. It cannot be a consistent support in a war. The chopper has a horrible heat signature not to mention, its got an airframe which isnt an attack chopper or a full troop carrier. I also heard it at one time had the tendency to chop off its rotor blades in extreme maneuvers. But you gotta admit, this is one mean looking SOB.
Not so.. the export version of the MI24 is performing awesomely in Sri Lanka.. just readup on the battle news. The speed of this is so awesome no matter what is on the pylons
In Sri Lanka the rebels have no anti-aircraft weaponry. Don't forget the Northern alliance shot down 333 Mi-24's because of their IR signature produced by the large TV3-117's venting on either side of the craft. The only way to rectify this problem was to install cool air mixers which limited the Hinds most important advantage, speed. It was also rarely used to ferry troops, which was it's original intent. It also suffers at night were it lacks precision navigation systems.
my most fav of all choppers by far, this and the rooivalk (but thats mostly just cause im south african :P ). u cannot doubt that this heli has undeniably sexy looks and sounds amazing.
The coolest combat chopper of all time. Its true the US has no real counterpart to it --- nor do they need one. Its fill a weird niche which became very deadly with the proliferation of anti-aircraft missiles. Still a great rig - tough as nails, armed to the teeth....and freakin' beautiful!
The Hind has to be the most recognizable gunship ever. Soon as you see those two bubble cockpits, you know what you're dealing with. A friggin scary implement of war.
Do you think a stinger missile is avoided by the type of helicopter?? The pilot's skill and anti-missile weaponry does. So don't offend this aircraft just because it's has seen more combat than its American counter part.

The Hinds were equiped with detection systems along with flares after americans gave stingers to afghans so iwoundn't be worry 'bout stingers anymore.
Exchiefboy 2 years ago
not really, the kills by the stingers were exaggerated, but it did cause a change in tactics.

It looks really hostile - like some sort of sci-fi insect. It is Czech pilots, by the way. Czech army has few wings of these killers.
SvrchovaneCechy 2 years ago
Doesn't really look like an attack helicopter, more like a support gunship type.

Dham mean and ugly crocodile, love it!

pfft this is a great heli but the Cobra Gunship is smaller and better
Marine4Life1999 2 years ago
The cobra was designed for Close Air support only. The Hind was made for a variety of roles. Your comparing aircraft from two different classifications.
Wags182494 2 years ago
The Hind could be used for close air support. In fact, it was close air support, anti-armor, and a troop carrier all in one unwieldy package. Its not a good helicopter for any of the above mentioned roles. Its too big and slow to be effective against any kind of organized defenses. Its extremely hot exhaust makes it an easy target for handheld heat seeking missiles making its combat survivability so low that it is useless to carry troops in. But it sure looks mean.
Bigweave74 2 years ago
Sure, i agree, "Cobra" is smaller than "Hind. But only 25 shots from "Strela-1M"(SA-7 Grail) = 18 "Cobra's" down during 1972. 563 shots from "Stinger" = 18 Hinds down in Afganistan. Sure, Cobra is better than Hind :D

I dont think that the sowjet retreat from afganistan if there helis were so invornuable also to stinger rockets.
First the lost many tanks and trucks in the mountans.
then came the hind an shot the fuck out of the afganis so that they nearly lost.
tne they get the stinger from the usa and shot down so many helis that the retreat.
My opinion
ur numbers are not reliable
propaganda is very high in russia also USA with the undestroyable m1 abraham.
eisscrat 2 years ago

The hind looks like a beast but you're right, I evened up the rating for ya ;)
k1lkenny 2 years ago
Bottom line is the chopper can be very effective in certain situations. It cannot be a consistent support in a war. The chopper has a horrible heat signature not to mention, its got an airframe which isnt an attack chopper or a full troop carrier. I also heard it at one time had the tendency to chop off its rotor blades in extreme maneuvers. But you gotta admit, this is one mean looking SOB.

Not so.. the export version of the MI24 is performing awesomely in Sri Lanka.. just readup on the battle news. The speed of this is so awesome no matter what is on the pylons
KurtWagnr 2 years ago 2
Also hinds was the first helicopter who shoot down the jet plane ;)
Slimdevilz 2 years ago
In Sri Lanka the rebels have no anti-aircraft weaponry. Don't forget the Northern alliance shot down 333 Mi-24's because of their IR signature produced by the large TV3-117's venting on either side of the craft. The only way to rectify this problem was to install cool air mixers which limited the Hinds most important advantage, speed. It was also rarely used to ferry troops, which was it's original intent. It also suffers at night were it lacks precision navigation systems.

What are you blabbering about?
The total loss of ALL soviet helicopters in the Afgan war is 324.
By all, I mean Mi-2, Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-26 and many others.

DeadlyPinguin 3 years ago 2
Actualy - there even no any America counterpart of Mi-24
