  • Anyone else come here to cry?

  • anyone else kind of laugh, out of disbelief, at how awesome he can write a song on the guitar?

  • @Liquidskeleton sometimes I just sit here and stare in aww at how quickly his hands move and I'm "WHY CAN'T I EVER DO THAT!? Oh wait thats right you're Elliott Smith, you were a musical fucking genius." Seriously my favorite artist of ALL times.

  • That guitar is absolutely breathtaking. This was a killer show.

  • He really plays well here. As we all know there are those few shows he played where he was just not in good shape. A nice reminder of how skilled he was as a musician and artist. I love his arrangements.

  • So good. So good. So good.

I adore the interplay between the natural and flatted sixths....the D7 in the chorus is like being jolted awake after being lulled to rest by the smooth b6 sounds of the verses (Fmaj7, Dmi).

Elliott was such subtle master of harmony.

  • he plays guitar so cleanly

  • it's like the girl who said "Can you PLEAASE record it?" has seen the future.

  • Love love love this song... it's cool at the beginning you hear the anxiety of the girls voice when he's not being filmed and she says can you PLEASE record it... I can imagine myself doing this. It's that "this guys is awesome don't miss a moment of it!" Wish I had seen him in real life....

  • That song is soooooooooooo well written.

  • everything reminds me of Cherie Lopez

  • thank u soooo much for posting one of my favourite elliott songs

  • I komw I'm leaving.

  • Think its sorta ironic how people get angry when people are talking or yelling because we all have the capacity to not miss something until the moment we lose it. Of course if you had the chance to be a this concert and you knew the outcome of this amazing mans life you might have been compelled to...

  • i'm almost glad he's not around to play live concerts...they're just full of people on their phones calling friends or trying to take pics/video constantly. you're there to enjoy the music.

  • @chickenlicken Yeah I hate those video taking assholes that record shows you find on Youtube and shit with artists who aren't alive anymore and shit. They all need to be killed! NO MORE CONCRETE MEMORIES!!!!

  • @chickenlicken

if people didnt take videos of concerts you wouldnt be watching this right now or commenting on it. you're an idiot.

  • Such a good song

  • Look at this... i cant stop thinking this person is now dead... just absolutely does not exist anymore... truly tragic...

  • he will always exist through his beautiful music.

  • genius... i just love this song!

  • Everything reminds me of him.

  • I will NEVER see him play live. Obviously, I know.

It just hit me though. Hard.

  • amazing guitar player

  • amazing show, this performace was flawless

  • it annoys me how ignorant some people are at elliott gigs talking etc

  • @gmanlikelylad It's at a record store. Of course people are going to be talking.

  • @gmanlikelylad They are talking because it's a record store show... an album launch

  • @gmanlikelylad That person talking is the person who's filming this. feel grateful for those ignorant people.

  • this is fucking amazing.

  • Why is this the only live version on youtube? :(

  • i miss him

  • jaw dropping

  • pirate batallion

  • at the post by mjl8485

  • I think that if this song was about heroin that "she" wouldn't be staring into outer space crying...would heroin do that? personified or not? otherwise...beautiful song...easily one of my favorites...along with roman candle

  • This song was written about his stint in rehab in Arizona after the intervention of his friends. Youll notice he gets pretty specific in those final verses you were refering to. He talks about 'the sun' in another song too where he gets very explicit about the subject: "everybody cares, everybody understands"... i liked it as a love song too :(

  • I finally understand now - I just couldn't think of a personification of drugs, but I just figured it out. But it is a love song though - just not about a human, aha. Metaphors confuse me sometimes...I need to think about it before jumping to conclusions...ahah.

  • jesus christ. what a beautiful rendition. so good, so clean, so effortless. too bad he doesn't look to be enjoying himself. but i suppose then he wouldn't be elliott, and we wouldn't feel the same way we do.

  • wow what an opener

  • he played a yamaha fg 180. red label. made in the 60s.

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar he played?

  • i think this one is yamaha

  • thanks so much for posting, its the only live version of this song i could find. you just made my day.

  • god i love elliott smith, another reason why i love is i can identify with his lyrics and music, i am really down right now about a girl, this isnt exacetly helping lol, but atleast we can both relate....

  • Or, you can keep the letters the same, and have the song be whatever the fuck you want it to be about. It's ambiguous, and that's why we can spin it any way.

  • Agreed, sir. If zwfwrestling's logic is correct, then here are some other possible song meanings revealed if we only just add letters:

The Beatles - Let It Bestiality

Led Zeppelin - Black Doggy Paddle

    Pearl Jam - Better Mannequin

    Queen - Underwear Pressure

Jimi Hendrix Experience - Castles Made of Sandcastles

Talking Heads - And Sheep Was

Potentially the stupidest thing I've ever seen on YouTube, kid.

  • I LOL'D.

  • have you not heard "king's crossing?" "true love?" the entire "self titled" album? sure elliott didn't get hooked to H until 01, well after this song. but H was always a metaphor in his music. "the same sermon all the time", "we could do what we wanted," "leave me alone, you oughta be proud," "both of you can just fade to black," "then just leave it alone"...theme in all these songs is for E to be left alone with his 'love', which sadly became too real. luckily he beat it before he died

  • are you Fin kidding me? you dont think Ellott got hooked on H until O1??

  • Smith allegedly didn't even get into heroin and crack until the Figure 8 tour. He used addiction as a theme in a lot of his songs but that doesn't really mean they are always specifically about drugs. This song, on the other hand, to me at least, is about losing someone and not being able to forget about them. Who couldn't identify with something as simple that?

  • wow im a fan yeah MEN your Video AWSOME soo cool Hey ellioth you're The Good!!

  • wow never sew this one live before!

  • I am fairly certain that Elliott is a wizard

  • goosebumps.
