I love this! Music in any form has the ability to tell a story. This is telling a very important tale to the youth of Australia! Love the Herd and Triple J!
how can you say they ruined this song? the whole song is about the lyrics. anyway that this song can be introdced to a wider audience can only be good. war is young me dying and old me talking shit!!
This is a great version, I still prefer the classic but it is nice to hear it revived, one of those few songs that truly make me shiver.
And there seems to be a lot of hip-hop haters out there, who frequently make the mistake of thinking Aussie hip-hop is Aussies copying Yanks, well in fact we and NZ have very much our own distinctive style, it is not like American hiphop at all, particularly the lyrics and themes are dramatically different, I quite like Aussie/NZ hip-hop. Well each 2 their own
people need to get this conscription bullshit out of their heads. the song was written about Australian Army regular's (in particular Mick Storen (John Schumanns' brother-in-law) and Frank Hunt) accounts of their time in Vietnam. and in addition to that, conscripts were not taken below the age of 20. so yes this song is patriotic and at the same time tells of 'kids' fighting a horrible war.
A great way for today's youth to create a connection with Australia's military past; through rap. I don't think many people really believe what ANZAC Day is about or what it stands for anymore...it seems to be a lot like Christmas or Easter in representing only a public holiday where people drink piss all day.
More needs to be done to educate Australia's youth about our (military) past, however significant the events (such as Vietnam) really are.
I'd love to see a full clip of John Schumann jumping in with the lyrics with the Herd, that just adds a whole new dimension to the song. It's literally taking the past and joining it with the present for something quite unique. Sure there's added rap lyrics but it takes nothing away from the feel of the song.
There's nothing wrong with the Herd doing their own version. It means they're passionate about the themes in the original, and thought the message needed to be reiterated. It's a poem. The meaning of the lyrics still apply in the cover. If it wasn't for the Herd, I would never have heard the original. I'm sure the same applies for others of my age.
This is the first time I have heard this song, it touched me, my old man was drafted to Vietnam 40+ years ago. He still has trouble with sleeping and mental issue because the australian government treated them all like shit, and the public were not much better. It wasnt his fault he was drafted to war. All vets deserve respect and admiration for what they did for our country and for there mates. Lest We Forget.
Ok, it gets the song out to the younger generation, but come on it just doesn't have the same meaning as the original by RedGum. Some songs just shouldn't be re-done. I'm the same age as these singers but prefer RedGum anyday. At least they didn't really change the words.
This band have given this song to my generation (i'm 16), these guys should be praised for that. It's an amzing song and everyone should be able to enjoy it.
I use to work with a guy that served in Nam & he has a hatred for chinese people, who knows what happened to him while he was over there as he never really talked about it. This version of I was only 19 is not bad I am not a fan of Hip Hop but I am not going to dog someone for adding their own rendition of a song, it brings it into the new generation. The original I can't listen to.I give points to these guys for doing what they can to a good song..Not everyone can like everything out there huh?
I get the whole patriotism and i'm a fan of aussie hiphop just as much as the next person but this is kinda a butchered version of this song as some songs are best left alone. But great effort.
fuckin great cover brings it to a whole new generation war fuckin sucks nothing good about it but if comes down to it you have to protect your way of live and i have the up most respect for soliders that are fighting and fallen soliders that will never seen home all there loves ones ever again they gave there life for us at home
You know Christophermau1962 your wrong its not bad listen to it a few times........ it grows on ya and they that is the herd have thie head inthe right place we could do with more young people like this in Australia.
this song is not about that choice, lots of Australians and Americans were conscripted, let me repeat that : they were forced, they often did not want to go.
Wholly shit I just read some more comments. 1stly RED GUM loves this cover so much he appears on the recoeded version for a record and to014649 REDGUN never wanted a fucking cent he wrote this for his brother (albiet through marrage) he has no interest in money dickhead otherwise he write something that would sell alot since he has the talen, not something that would take 10 years to become recognised
This song serves as a telling reminder to every bogan with a Southern Cross tattoo what real patriotism cost young men in the past.
If you think it is offensive to the Vets, take a copy down your local RSL with a listing of the lyrics. See what they think about it. This cover serves to bring to a new generation an idea of what is the real price paid by our men in uniform.
This is certainly a different song to Redgum's, but it probably means that anyone listening to this will seek out the Redgum version. Congratulation to the band for putting a new spin on a classic song. Especially now we live in a society where people are so selfish and these guys risked (and gave their lives) for their mates.
So next time you hit a car leave a note, or on the train/bus think about standing up for old or pregnant people. We are Aussies. We do the right thing!
@TheHornsberryHour I would reckon they would like it opens up the eyes of the younger generations of what they went threw and what they are still going threw still prefer the original but still a good cover
@muztard damn those ignorant uncultured twats who so love their southern cross tatts, Who think being ignorant, drinking beer and having a southern cross tatt makes them a real aussie! they dont make men like they used to thats for sure.... Society is fucked! Great song and for all the fallen soldiers, REST IN PEACE- lest we forget. Love this Land.
@muztard i have a southern cross tattoo this does not make me a bogan and i know what tru patriotism is u dont know what i do for a job or for my country so stop being a judgemental idiot and judging a book by its cover, on the other hand i love this song good work!!

@muztard The songs About conscription. Person's than where forced to go to war. Real patriots? I think not.But they served and they looked after their mates like proper Bogans . Unlike self loving yuppies such as your self.
@muztard I have a southern cross tattoo. You now why I got it? Because my family came out on the second fleet. And have fought in EVERY war that Australia has been in. Died at gallipoli, fought at the Somme. That, is my nod, to everyone, that has given me the life that I am SO lucky to have. You can call me a bogan, i'll be proud. I know what that tattoo means.
It's your parogative not to serve in the armed forces, Bu tthose stupid people who have from the bore war till now have given you that choice. But you have no right to call them/ME stupid. I can only hope that if we ever come under attack (UNLIKLEY) that you take up arms in defence of our nation, HATE THE WAR NOT THE TROOPS.
pursing strategic interest?these guys are morons.Vietnam wasn't like iraq there is no oil there lol they went there to stop the north viet army and vc from taking over the whole country i wonder if any of their relatives were actually in a conflict?USA and aussies didn't gain a thing goin into nam,we fucking lost remember
If it was a tribute they wouldn't say i can still hear frank a screaming mess a bleeding flesh, couldn't retrieve his legs.Franky kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon(when man landed on the moon 1969) it's meant to be a solom song i don't care if they had permission they fucked it up,my great uncle fought on kokoda and in tobruk was a pow at changi, these guys need to be stopped from doin anymore covers
i think its great they covered this song, it gives it new life and opens it up to whole new generation and reminds us again what sacrifice they made for us, its a tribute
also redgum did support them in making it and so did the diggers who appeared in the remade video clip.
ozdesmo ure a fucking loser 49 and listening to aussie hip hop means you are trying to keep up with my generation,i'm 22 i can't believe what i'm hearing it's sacreligious they've added shit lyrics and have put a hip hop spin on it,do they know it was in a way a tribute to the diggers who fought a unpopular war and many payed with their lives then came back to be treated like shit by us their fellow country men fuck you ozdesmo musical straight jacket aussie hip hop is boring as shit
great version of a great song that will ensure it lives on for the new generations who would never have heard of Redgum. Anyway, TRhe Herd are a great and highly political bunch in their own right - 77% anyone?
@wranglermy07 Seriously mate, can you not see these guys have nothing but the utmost respect for our war veterans, and to be able to transpose this message to a new generation of open ears serves nothing else but a positive tone and a reminder that we should never forget why we live in such a great country and hopefully because of our grand and great grand parents, you and me most probably will never have to go through the same shit as they did all these years ago. Peace out
i have to say that this song was mad when i saw it live in townsville. but theres always controversy because these guys never had anything to do with war
as a 3 theatre vet @ 35 yo thanks for representing, the rest of the world is caught in the past, istuggled to get past today.1RAR somalia 1993 @19, 2cav Iraqx2 Afghanx1
ramcd if you are saying the herd should be shot for doing this cover then you are a fucking idiot....Redgum (the band who sung the original) were so impressed with this cover that they actually appear on the album version of it... if the original artists like this cover so much, what gives you the right to disagree with them?
Rap speaks to an audience that Redgum never will - it's great that this song had been resurrected for the kids of today. Plus you obviously know nothing about The Herd - they are a collective of rappers and musicians who are certainly left wing and anti-war. Search this site for songs like 77% and Star Ship Trouper but I'm sure that your musical straight jacket will not allow you to move on. I'm 49 yrs old I& I can still get into aussie hip hop ... chill out and broaden your horizons mate.
They don't defile anything. I was only 19 dealt with the fact that the soldiers sent to Vietnam were just kids haunted by horrific memories upon their return.
It in no way devaules their efforts and sacrifices and doesn't seek to politicise the issue either. If you feel that this song is an argument against war, perhaps you have a guilty conscience and would prefer the television images of jets blowing things up rather than being confronted with the human cost paid by your own countrymen!
@muztard--- who cares if someone has a southern cross tattoo who cares if they only listen to it because its rap, the message still gets across, and the blokes i know with southern cross tatoos do so cause they lost someone in those jungles. and stand proud on anzac day, and people who make judgments about them just cause of there age and looks clearly do not understand this song at all
oi redgum just wanted royalties off the cover lol and i think at the start the guy says shit about stratigic interest like he's trying to draw a comparison between nam and the war on terror, doesn't have a clue what he is talking about
Your a deadset fuck-up,A B Paterson was a brilliant poet, hilltop hoods and aussie hip hop those guys are MUSICIANS/SINGERS/SONG WRITERS deffinetly not poets, have a think about it poets don't fucking sing their poems you idiot, stop thinking rap is all that because it's a guy rhyming words that don't have to make sense over multiple lines and another guy who could make a beat with a computer program,or borrow an instrumental there is fuck all skill in rap,you don't need to know any keys signatures
are u a teenager?i heard this song when i was 12 now 22 new exactly what it was about, but your right tsome teenagers don't give a fuck about their history, korean war for starters i bet ppl in their teens would be like huh their's a war in korea now, prob in north soon i bet
I am a teenager. I care greatly about history. Especially Australian History. I see where your coming from about lots of teenagers not knowing or caring about Australian History and war vets. I also care a lot about Australian War vets. I am joining the army when I am old enough. I know exactly what you mean.
I fully agree with you mate. If they ar going to act like children they should do it in another place not on youtube especially not in the commentarries for this song. By the way this is one of the greatest songs i've ever heard. At least I know that Mongolians can't turn a classic into a great rap song
This is one of the very few great songs that help us remember the anzac's. And it's definitely not something to throw cheap words and smug at. Aussie pride! Lest we forget**
yeah the orignial is about all the soldiers that never came home but this is one of the worst most shittest covers ever created,u don't agree there are some songs that shouldn't be covered like when KORN did another brick in the wall by pink floyd?
How can you turn a classic song that we all stood and sang to in the mess and warp it into this rap crap? This does the original by RedGum absolutely no justice.
I only listened to it to see if someone did a remake that would do the original justice. Fuck me, wasnt that a mistake.
I have read the lyrics, mate. I understand the lyrics. The origianal is over 23 years old and therefore a classic. How can you class a song which has been out for what, 6 or so years a classic.
all you do is fucken winge you old bastard.. every single herd version posted on youtube has you bitchin you old wrinkly arse. i have mad respect to all aussie soliders but mate give it a brake.. these guys went on stage with john shuman from redgum.. so i dont think redgum has a problem with this edition
Dinkieyekiner (4 months ago)
the song passes the same message but brings a whole new generation close to this soldiers can relalte the names and countries are different but stories the same.
Old bastard and wrinkly arse. I bet that must have taken you a long time to think of that one. How are you feeling, are you ok? I hope you didnt overload your already over-burdened simple mind. Still, the amount of effort you have exhausted on your insults to me must have been a somewhat great strain on your childish mind. Perhaps you better go lay down and have a wittle nap. Amature.
And two more things for you. I have replied to two video clips of the herd, not every single version and the second, I posted a comment without insult to anyone so what gives you the right to insult me? Do yourself and the rest of the world a favour, take your own life you miserable piece of shit. I cant stand fuck ups like you. Make sure you count it correctly next time you dickhead, two comments on two Herd videos now go hang yourself.
Fuck off shit for brains. You started this shit. If you cannot reply to someones comment without insulting them then it is best you shut the fuck up. Your a waste of space, time and oxygen. Go buy yourself a rope and step ladder.
Whats wrong dip shit? Dont like it when someone throws shit back at ya? As for putting me in a coma.........you and what fucking army? You havent got the balls or the skill and like I said you miserable fuck up, you and I wouldnt be exchanging words like this if you werent a smart ass who's mouth ran off with him in the first place. Now, go find a fast moving bus and when you do, step the fuck out infront of it.
Did they chat to John? I imagine so given that John Schuman has performed it live with them and they were both interviewed the process of performing it on JJJ.
Remember this is a live version so it won't have the perfect polish of something recorded in a studio... damn fine live version if you ask me.
the song passes the same message but brings a whole new generation close to this soldiers can relalte the names and countries are different but stories the same.
aussie pride? son what are you on about??? its about being shipped off to some armpit of a place for reasons that you dont know about, getting fucked over and watching your mates get pasted, and then not being able to re-intergrate back into soceity and realising that war is a cunting hellish thing. its basically got nothing to do with being an aussie. just cos its set to a breakbeat and rapped dont make it good, or do the young uns just chant '..i was only 19..' cos thats all they understand???
the only reason u can only hear the crowd chant the chorus is maybe because its the only part of the song they knew? the song was only released late 05. and they cant of butchered it that bad if john schuman himself actually sings on the herd version of the song.
and no the song isnt about aussie pride, urthboy said it himself its "about the human cost of war,and the implications that seem to be forgotten i the pursuit of strategic interest"
mate, something called 'royalties'. this means that whomever owns the rights to a work, can allow others to cover it, and in return they receive money made off their work. of course he backs it. and this song was released in the 80's. and i dont need some guy to tell me what its all about, i kinda picked it all up from the original when i was young. but those are all side issues. the real point is, this has no emotion, it simply sounds terrible.
who are to say that he only did it for the money? and no emotion? u obvioulsy dont appreciate this kind of music. these guys are pouring there heart and soul into this song u cant doubt their credibility. just because you dont like the style of music doesnt mean the song is shit, if you dont like hip hop then you wont like the song because thats what it is. a hip hop version of a great song
I love this! Music in any form has the ability to tell a story. This is telling a very important tale to the youth of Australia! Love the Herd and Triple J!

i think its great they covered this song, it gives it new life and opens it up to whole new generation and reminds us again what sacrifice they made for us, its a tribute
also redgum did support them in making it and so did the diggers who appeared in the remade video clip.
wilzay2106 2 years ago
ozdesmo ure a fucking loser 49 and listening to aussie hip hop means you are trying to keep up with my generation,i'm 22 i can't believe what i'm hearing it's sacreligious they've added shit lyrics and have put a hip hop spin on it,do they know it was in a way a tribute to the diggers who fought a unpopular war and many payed with their lives then came back to be treated like shit by us their fellow country men fuck you ozdesmo musical straight jacket aussie hip hop is boring as shit

Peace out

ramcd if you are saying the herd should be shot for doing this cover then you are a fucking idiot....Redgum (the band who sung the original) were so impressed with this cover that they actually appear on the album version of it... if the original artists like this cover so much, what gives you the right to disagree with them?
Cronach 2 years ago
Ahhh, the Americanisation of Australia, the legacy of the Howard era plus the fact rap is shit all adds up to fucking over a national anthem.

If you feel that this song is an argument against war, perhaps you have a guilty conscience and would prefer the television images of jets blowing things up rather than being confronted with the human cost paid by your own countrymen!
muztard 2 years ago 19
i'm not even going to argue with you.
baxtersbaseball 2 years ago
@muztard--- who cares if someone has a southern cross tattoo who cares if they only listen to it because its rap, the message still gets across, and the blokes i know with southern cross tatoos do so cause they lost someone in those jungles. and stand proud on anzac day, and people who make judgments about them just cause of there age and looks clearly do not understand this song at all
calais173 10 months ago
oi redgum just wanted royalties off the cover lol and i think at the start the guy says shit about stratigic interest like he's trying to draw a comparison between nam and the war on terror, doesn't have a clue what he is talking about

what is wrong with rap, most times it has meaning and emotion, such as in this
but you can back up your response, its just that there is a bad sterotype on rap as most people rap about drugs and sex, not all the time tho

Rap is a form of spoken poetry and looking at other poets...
are you also calling Banjo Paterson unaustralian

Your a deadset fuck-up,A B Paterson was a brilliant poet, hilltop hoods and aussie hip hop those guys are MUSICIANS/SINGERS/SONG WRITERS deffinetly not poets, have a think about it poets don't fucking sing their poems you idiot, stop thinking rap is all that because it's a guy rhyming words that don't have to make sense over multiple lines and another guy who could make a beat with a computer program,or borrow an instrumental there is fuck all skill in rap,you don't need to know any keys signatures

How can you turn a classic song that we all stood and sang to in the mess and warp it into this rap crap? This does the original by RedGum absolutely no justice.
I only listened to it to see if someone did a remake that would do the original justice. Fuck me, wasnt that a mistake.
BloodRaaven 2 years ago 3
read the lyrics, mate?
i consider this an australian hip hop classic, if a lesser one, as you consider redgum's classic.
hurstyrepz 2 years ago
I have read the lyrics, mate. I understand the lyrics. The origianal is over 23 years old and therefore a classic. How can you class a song which has been out for what, 6 or so years a classic.
BloodRaaven 2 years ago 2
all you do is fucken winge you old bastard.. every single herd version posted on youtube has you bitchin you old wrinkly arse. i have mad respect to all aussie soliders but mate give it a brake.. these guys went on stage with john shuman from redgum.. so i dont think redgum has a problem with this edition

Amature.
BloodRaaven 2 years ago 2
And two more things for you. I have replied to two video clips of the herd, not every single version and the second, I posted a comment without insult to anyone so what gives you the right to insult me? Do yourself and the rest of the world a favour, take your own life you miserable piece of shit. I cant stand fuck ups like you. Remember this is a live version so it won't have the perfect polish of something recorded in a studio... damn fine live version if you ask me.

mate its aussie pride, this song is meant to speak to tha younger generation of aussies
hazeylad 3 years ago 3
aussie pride? son what are you on about??? its about being shipped off to some armpit of a place for reasons that you dont know about, getting fucked over and watching your mates get pasted, and then not being able to re-intergrate back into soceity and realising that war is a cunting hellish thing. its basically got nothing to do with being an aussie. just cos its set to a breakbeat and rapped dont make it good, or do the young uns just chant '..i was only 19..' cos thats all they understand???
jozinske 3 years ago
damn right they should of left it how it is
qwerty3365 3 years ago
the only reason u can only hear the crowd chant the chorus is maybe because its the only part of the song they knew? the song was only released late 05. and they cant of butchered it that bad if john schuman himself actually sings on the herd version of the song.
and no the song isnt about aussie pride, urthboy said it himself its "about the human cost of war,and the implications that seem to be forgotten i the pursuit of strategic interest"
artdamage0 3 years ago
mate, something called 'royalties'. this means that whomever owns the rights to a work, can allow others to cover it, and in return they receive money made off their work. of course he backs it. and this song was released in the 80's. and i dont need some guy to tell me what its all about, i kinda picked it all up from the original when i was young. but those are all side issues. the real point is, this has no emotion, it simply sounds terrible.
jozinske 3 years ago
who are to say that he only did it for the money? and no emotion? u obvioulsy dont appreciate this kind of music. these guys are pouring there heart and soul into this song u cant doubt their credibility. just because you dont like the style of music doesnt mean the song is shit, if you dont like hip hop then you wont like the song because thats what it is. a hip hop version of a great song
