My grandfather was buried last friday. This was playing so loud in my head as the coffin was going down, but so beautifully, I barely could walk away to go home afterwards.
The Rachmaninov is OK, but can I draw your attention to three other composers, one of whom is a young Canadian Ukrainian who is currently writing new sacred music.
The composers from the 1800's are Kyrylo Stetsenko and Mykola Lysenko, their sacred music is just brilliant.
The third composer is Roman Hurko who has written some of the most divine liturgical music I have ever heard.
@VitaliyGR No, the Rachmaninov Vespers (?) are not simply OK, they are simply brilliant, penned by one of the greatest musical composers of all time!!
@VitaliyGR No, the Rachmaninov Vespers (?) are not simply OK, they are simply brilliant, penned by one of the greatest musical composers of all time!!
My choir is thinking about incorporating one of the vespers for our Catholic Mass. These pieces are so sublime, shame that the youth think that Pop-Christian is the only form worth while listening to.
I'm a young person who doesn't think Christian pop is the only kind of worthwhile church music. Repetitive and deep as a saucer compared to a lot of older stuff.
@JFMello1116 If you're really looking for music that will move you right down to your soul....in this vein....find out which Eastern Orthodox church in your city has the best choir (Russian or Serbian most likely)....and just go.
На горах станут воды. Дивна дела Твоя, Господи! Посреде гор пройдут воды. Дивна дела Твоя, Господи. Вся премудростию сотворил еси. Слава Ти, Господи, сотворившему вся.
Singing along, i thought it low, but didn't check it. That's pretty cool, makes it easier on the tops, as long as you have Bass 3s. When one choir did it 7 years ago, we had to re-pitch every movement, sadly. And they all dove. In that #5, with the B-flat, that meant we hit an A, and only one other guy had it, so we got banged for being thin on that. But we just heard we have another go in the Fall. Woo-woo, can hardly wait!! A's are easier now, anyway. Thanks for this Classic!!
(russisch Сергей Васильевич Рахманинов, scientific transliteration Sergej Vasil'evič Rachmaninov; he himself used Rachmaninoff as the transcription of his name)
So, officially right is "Rachmaninov",.. and also the most famous spelling of his name outside of Russia
@LazaBrkonja There was a really beautiful version on erato from Washington DC with Rostropovich conducting and Maureen Forrestor the contralto which was pretty amazing. As well, Robert Shaw did a beautiful version with an american choir in France,on telarc. But yes, the Russians 'have this in their blood'.
You're just going to the wrong church. This piece can be sung by during Vespers by any choir that sings in Old Church Slavonic (Russians, Bulgarians, Ukranians, Serbs, etc.). Even if not sung at Vespers, it can be incorporated into the Orthodox Divine Liturgy - as an offertory piece or during the congregation's exit from the church.
Out of any doubt, this man was enlighted by the Holy Spirit, by God Himself to write this heavenly piece of music. This is the grace of Christ Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven, the sound of paradise, a beam of the joy of the saints. Great example of Russian piety, power of Orthodoxy and life in prayer.
My favorite of Rachmaninoff's Vespers Set. Truly defines beautiful.

I don't know about God's tastes for music, but I really don't think God would like the idea of using music similar to pop and rock to worship Him.

I don't believe in god or spirituality, but the sincerity of the hymn is touching.

@sniperquasi The hymn is "touching." What's it touching? You've no God, no spirituality, no soul. Just sayin.

Gosh Rachmaninov Speaks to me every time I listen to him. This song is like a weeping kindness and grace in my heart. I feel it in my soul.
