It's funny how ignorant most comments are. How dumb can you be blaming the dog? Pit bulls can be one of the most loving dogs you can have. The reason they are pointed at as vicious dogs is because they are very strong and used for gambling. But no one looks at the German shepherd. German shepherds are known to be more vicious yet aren't hated on because they are used for police dogs. @AbitOnus This is too show how its irresponsible owners to blame not the dogs. The dog should have been socialized better and should have been under the owners control. Animal aggression isnt equal to human aggression the two do not coinside whats so ever. Saying one breed is more aggressive than another is just pure ignorance. For example, in one of the reference sections on the website regarding dog attacks, dogsbite changed the name of an article to make it conform to their beliefs and still accredited it to the author. Also, the central arguments on dogsbite revolve around the Clifton Report, which is complete garbage.

They are some of the most abused dogs on the planet so therefore, using your rationale, they have been made dangerous by humans.

@AbitOnus Yeah, they were bred to be aggressive, a long time ago. Today, that trait is and has been bred out of the breed. Like I said before, there are a few cases where aggressiveness has been instilled in a dog, but that is a rarity in today's society. It is common sense to know that anyone who breeds dogs these days, especially a "dangerous breed" like a pit bull, would ensure that any dog they bred had a mellow temperament. As for sources, I'll dig them up. What would you like sources for?

@AbitOnus For the most part, it has. Granted there are a few individuals, less than 1% of breeders, that still breed these dogs for fighting. The rest of the breeders out there breed pit bulls for calm temperaments, not to make them aggressive.

Scroll down find Pit Bull Terrier and look at how many are listed. This is a site for posting dogs in shelters. When I checked the pit bulls had 15k (not all shelters list on this site, my local one doesn't) and I believe Labs are the only one who topped their number.

@magicalcrazyness Actually the majority of shelter dogs are mixed breeds, and because mixed breeds are not recognized labs and pits are at the top. Also pit bulls have become almost unidentifiable in our society and many dogs are mistaken for the wrong breed.

And legislation uses pit bull to encompass several different breeds including American Pit Bull terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, American Bullies, and sometimes Dogo Argentino.The thing is, these dogs the shelter labeled as pit bulls, even if they aren't the news will likely label them.

I have seen a lot of reports on dog attacks, local and on the internet. A lot of the ones where a "pit bull terrier" attacked, the dog was not one. And if it's a mix they usually don't point it out, while they do with other breeds. I remember I read one where 3 dogs attacked, a Bull mastiff, Labrador Retriever, and a pit bull mix. It as titled "Pit bull attack"
