I think it’s nice and all that you are paying tribute to Brad for all his musical accolades and everything. But the bottom line is; he was the father of two children who most certainly did not care that their father was a has been rock-star. His selfishness for days gone by far outweighed the needs of his children; and that, in fact, is truly the tragic aspect of this story.
Scholz is responsible for some of the best power chord rock songs in history. On top of that, he INVENTED the ROCKMAN used on countless hit records. Huge influence in the recording arts in it's day. Gibson Fuzztone, Vox Wah-Wah, MXR Phase Shifter and the Rockman. The pantheon of guitar effects.
to those of you who think this is boring, you guys obviously don't appreciate talent when you see it....Scholz's guitar playing not only contributed to the hard rock and heavy metal that's around today, the guy actually created his own pedals, and helped pave the way for new guitar sounds...I recommend that you pay a little closer attention...
Yeah.....ha ha..........finger tapping and hopscotch......and yo-yos......It's cool, but the true talented guitarist is the one that can made a memorable melody.....with....a memorable tone.....
im very grateful to have seen boston play before delp took his life. went to a concert in 03 when i was 13. they were my favorite band at that time too. RIP Brad Delp. yu will never be forgotten.
Tom can jam and is the best of the best making music but on guitar Barry blows him away.Few can write music to Toms level the man is just a genious .The sound boston has and the way he plays the organ is second to none. And yes he is great on the guitar .Barry along with Peter Frampton and a few select others including that Creed ax guy are my favs .Tom S. is my favorite musical sound guy he produces perfection in the studio like no one else ever can or has.
If tom scholz is playing the yellow guitar on the left, whos also playing the solo on the right that looks similar to tom but has a black guitar and a grey sweatshirt??...JW
My only complaint about Tom: I've seen a bit of footage of him "soloing" live at this point, and all I've ever seen him do is tap. Am I missing something, or is that pretty much the routine? If it is, he should stick to blues boxes and lyrics, as I'm not sure if he's the solo kind of guy. The guy can write a damn good melody, though.
That means Eruption blows too. As does the Heartbreaker solo. Tom IS a composer at heart, but do you rip on classical music because it is often played w/o much deviation? I appreciate the man for what he does; so what if that's his unaccompanied solo? I actually like the change-up to Bo Diddley/tribal feel...
TaskforceDingbat: hey dingbat, when TS creates a misguided song bashing CORPORATE AMERICA - while I and many others have lived very good lives by working in CORPORATE AMERICA - therein lies the "misguided, misinformed radical liberal" Try participating in life before you offer up ignorant comments. BOSTON rocks!

If I were the moron, I'd know it was "butting" in, rather than "budding." But hey, maybe you're just sharing your smoking habits with us. What the heck do I know?
LOL,you guys all raise fine points, really, but I think you're all forgetting about a true pioneer into this style of play, the guy who inspired this entire school of playing: Jeff Beck. He was doing this years before those guys.
Yes but I bet you would enjoy it if you we're there, seeing as everyone was so emotional anyways, you'd just be thinking where's Brad? Just to be there at the moment would feel so good...
Yep. That's the most important thing to point out. Since Billy Gibbons invented it, he is the undisputed king of tapping. This fact makes everything Eddie did with it null and void, and it should be illegal to listen to any Van Halen albums or mention the words "Eddie" and "tapping" in the same sentence. Wait, Billy Gibbons isn't the first guy to ever play blues riffs! His stuff is illegal now, too!!

Gee Tom. Did you invent two handed tapping too? What a snore fest. I can't believe that you haven't ordered this removed from YouTube. Get a little lost around 2 minutes did you? I guess you don't know what to do if you aren't ripping off Eddie Van Halen or Brian May. What band is this?

clesterrific...you are very wise. Tom "the great" never forgets to remind us fans how much smarter he is they all of us. Is he going to sue Eddie Van Halen now. Rock on Sib, Barry and Fran....RIP Brad...SucK eggs Tom!
Tom Scholz doesn't rip off anybody, almost all the guitar greats have been doing 2 handed tapping long before Eddie Van Halen. It has been part of Toms guitar solo since 1970, and after Boston started touring in 1976.
OH LOOK WHAT I FOUND YOUTUBE, A MUSIC DUMBASS! If you knew anything you would know that Tom has been tapping before Eddie picked up a damn guitar and that eddie didn't invent tapping, he popularized it through his unnecessary overuse of the technique.
Ohhh...a fucking know it all. "Tom has been tapping before Eddie picked up a damn guitar". Do you KNOW THIS FOR A FACT? You fucking wanna be, why don't you post YOUR shit, show us how good YOU are and lets US rate. Do it or shut the fuck up you little ass wipe piece of shit!!!
if you ever knew anything about eddie you would know he started playing only three years before van halen was formed(which means he started playing in 73'). Tom has been using tapping since 1970, just a year after Boston was formed. He's been using it in his solos since then, he just didn't over do it like eddie did. and yes this is fact, so don't come at me with anymore dumbass comments because i know my shit.
Wow...you got just about everything wrong... Eddie was born in '55. He was twelve when he started playing. That's '67, not '73. Boston was formed in 1975 (although I don't think there is any definite source to when they actually formed, but it sure wasn't as early as '69). I've only heard Tom tap once and that is on the Walk On Medley, which actually sounds like a take on Eddie's style. Besides, tapping has been around for centuries. But who cares, they're both great in their own respects.
According to Boston's own website, Tom didn't play guitar until the age of 21. Being that in was born in 1947 (according to Wikipedia), that means he started playing in 1968, not 1974. Wikipedia also has a quote from EVH himself saying he saw Jimmy Page on TV in 1971doing a pull-off on an open string, then learned to use the fimger as a nut and move it around. SO it's safe to say that both guys developed their skill roughly around the same time.
Boston , rather Brad and Tommy, first started playing together in 1970 as Brad Delp says in an interview on youtube. their first record 'Boston' came out in '76. I don't know for sure about the tapping situation but does it really matter? EVH is an amazing guitarist and so is Tommy. Anyone who loves music and maybe plays as well will be happy just to know that there are people out there they can enjoy and be inspired by.
Actually Barry Goudreau took the technique from EVH after watching him in rehearsals, when Van Halen opened for Boston. Soon after both he and Tom were using it in concert.
