The crash might look bad, but it's actually better for the driver. Those zones are simply "crush zones" which absorb more of the impact over a longer period of time ... thus reducing the effect on the driver.
@ak5504 your point is a good one - it's better for the front to crumple than not - but I think you meant Force = Impulse/Time, in which case extending the time does decrease the force that needs to be applied for a fixed change in momentum. Or stated in a way people might be more familiar with (F=ma), if the crumple zone is larger/longer, then the rate of deceleration is less, and so the force exerted is also less.
You want the front of the car to crumple, you DO NOT want the passenger cage to crumple (from the A-pillar back) - this cars a-pillar did start to crumple some... moreso that most other 2011 cars, but this was still a good performer.
The more a car crumples the safer it is. Remember impulse is fixed to the object and cannot be changed, and by extending Time, the force exerted on the body is reduced. When the front end of a car crumples, it is extending time. (Force = Impulse x Time)
For everyone that's complaining about how the "front looks after this crash".....you're all dumbasses. Go to the IIHS channel on here or their website and take a look at all the other crashed cars. Or for example, watch the video for the 2009 Volvo C30 crash (also a 'Top Safety Pick') and notice how the A-pillar bends just like this Kia's. And then ask yourselves, how would your clunkers look after a crash?
If the car looks bad it is a good thing. Google crinkle or crunch zones in cars. Cars are designed to take the impact into locations that don't disturb the cabin as much as possible, so the more kinetic energy you see used on the vehicle more than likely the better the car holds up. This isn't a litmus test as most older vehicle would look horrible after a wreck and the energy would be transferred through the cabin. But in modern day cars, this look above is not something I would fret about
@bodingoji True and general rule of thumb is the worse the car looks the better off you are because that means it absorbed all of the energy of the impact and put it somewhere other than your body! My friend was T-Boned @ 50mph by another full size car in his 2011 Sonata and he walked away from the accident (though paramedics advised he go to a Hospital, he was fine!) .... great car for the price!
@keegan47401 hahaha i know its supposed to crumple. but seriously. a car thats one of the best pick for safety looks like taht after a crash. then how would other cars who get low rating look like? tahts what im saying :D
the front is designd to crumple, saving the the driver from "blunt force" also, you notice the inside fills up with air bags. i can see why it did so well in this test.
@solarlightning Things have changed fast. The latest Hyundai and Kia as as much reliable as Toyota/Honda according to Conumer reports, as as high residual value. Safety-wise, Optima is better than Camry and Accord. It's just facts.
@solarlightning 2011 Consumer reports, Hyundai/Kia have 2 top picks(Small car and family SUV). Hyundai Sonata has higher predictive reliability score than Toyota Camry. Camry/Accord don't have the best reliability anymore.
@solarlightning Cars are just like electronics, Thesedays, Korean Samsung or LG makes top products in the world. The core-part of GM Volt's lithium battery is provided by Korean LG, Samsung provides the battery to the hybrid cars of BMW. Hyundai/Kia now their turn to rise.
@solarlightning You are right if it's 2 years ago. Now they make good reliable cars, it's not my belief, but the data. Read latetst Consumer Reports, the latest Sonata is better than Camry, both in reliabilty and safety, it's just beginning though. Not only the result of tests done by Consumer Reports. The residual value is a good indicator of the reliability. According to ALG Automotive Lease Guide, Sonata's residual value after 3 years is estimated as 54%, while Camry is 49.5%.
@solarlightning I admit that Toyota, on average, makes more reliable cars than Hyudai, as all the cars from Toyota are better than average, while some Hyundai cars like, esp, vans. are still poor, However when it's confined to Sonata and Camry, It's different. In some parts, Hyundai already makes one of the best as they have 2 top picks in 2011 Consumer Reports.
@fishermanonboat ya your right.... once hyundia makes all cars relliable their going to take toyota.. all im saying is just not yet... yea the optima is reliable but only if you get a good one and not a lemon.. there were stats from last year tht hyundia/kia made 1 car a lemon out of 20 cars and honda had 1 per 40 and toyota 1 per55...yes if you dont get an optima tht is a lemon it will run for abou 300,000 k probably... my friend has an 08 sequioa tht just passed 500,000 which is amaziing
@solarlightning Just don't generalize your own experieces. I don't believe your data. Which stat is it? What is the reference? When compared 2010 Sonata vs 2010 Camry, Sonata show better reliability scores both in Consumer Reports and JD Power depedability test.
@fishermanonboat oh hes always travling and there isnt many major problem on it,..i had an 02 camry with 350,000 mile ran amazing.. it was the v6 which starts off with around 200hp.. we dynoed it right before and it came out 170hp which is really good for tht milage...my friend has an 08 optima (got it 07 so im not sure if its 08) and its a huuuuggggdeeeee lemon...i just got a new 2011 camry last year v6 and its fast and scores 10 out of 10 on reliability the optima has 8 out of 10
@solarlightning Return to the crash test by NHTSA. 2011 Kia Optima scored all 5 stars in Frotal, Side and Rollover, while your 2011 Camry Frontal 3, Side 4 and rollover 4. There's no information on the predicted reliabiity for both 2001 Optima and Camry yet, but I guess Optima's higher than Camry as Sonata(from the same platform) scores higher. Trust the data more than your feeling. : )
@solarlightning I had a 1996 Hyundai Elantra that's well over 350,000 k. And I have a 2006 Toyota Rav4 that's a lemon(a major problem with just 60,000k, I know it's a decent car, even though I'm unlucky.).. And here are some people who still drive 1987 Hyundai Pony(known as the worst lemon of the lemons) on the road. My point is here. your personal experience has nothing to do with what it actually is. The world's changing so fast that our rigid minds hardly can catch up with. :)
@japornip ya i completely believe you and that what im saying if i see a friend buy a KIA and its reliable im gonna switch over there if my new Camry is having problems i completely agree and i never said Hyundai is shit or anything... based on what Ive seen they are not good.. now people always tell me how Toyota sucks and i get mad cuz my experience with them has been great and i bet when people tell you kia sucks you also get mad cuz ur experience with them has been bad...
this is just BAD. notice how the A pillar (windshield) Broke??? tsk it almost had it.killer design and looks.a Subaru wouldn't get its driver anywhere near harm's way.
side airbag in frontal crash is bad in my opinion. when you are involved in head on crash, your car may be span and somebody driving behind you can hit the side of your car and then there is no protection than the car itself.
actually the optima fares better, test results are based on how the occupants hold up not how the car holds up. If the is totaled and the people walk away its a good thing. The Sonata looses a few points because the dummies head hits the "A" pillar with no air bag deployment. The Optima's side air bag protects the dummy even in the frontal crash.

How come the side curtain airbags are activated even the car is only having a front impact
kent1105 5 months ago
@kent1105 Because sometimes, the head will snap to the side, and in many cases, the head DOES hit the side window.

It matters only for the driver's safety
