Malmsteen is certainly fast but i don't hear creativity and composition come out of his playing, just a lot of fast scale runs. Eddie sounds as if he if feeling the sounds in his soul and communicating it to us. Besides, Malmsteen probably learned to play as he does by listening to Eddie.
Malmsteen is faster, does sweep picking and despite the fact he goes overboard a lot, does have some decent songs if you look for them. EVH is a better song writer, has better tone and is more versitle. I like EVH a bit better but pick your poison.
Eddie Van Halen by far. There is only one of him. I can find hundreds of teenage neoclassical metal heads who can play malmsteen stuff. It's all modes and scales. If you listen closely enough, he is basically playing the same runs over and over again (alternating between sweeping, alt. picking etc). At least Eddie has heart and creativity. I will admit that EVH couldn't play the stuff Malmsteen does, but vice versa. I sure as hell couldn't play Malmsteen stuff either, but I don't care to.
if you listen yngwie is not really faster he just never slows down and makes a point which is one thing in my opinion makes eddie better. in this particular solo eddie doesnt make alot of fast runs but if you listen to a lot of van halen ull hear some fuckin rediculous fast passages. spanish fly, mean street, also eddie plays mostly on the bridge pickup so his playing doesnt sound like a chinese sewing machine like alot of seemingly fast "shredders"
yngwie is technically more impressive, eddie has more soul and creativity. Love them both. Allan Holdsworth makes both look like musical infants (but he's not primarily a shredder).

You replied like Yngwie's fanboy. Listen to "Hot For Teacher" - its flawless riffs and rhythm, element of rock and funk with amazing solos. Eddie Van Halen have done much more with guitar(that is all aspects of guitar playing rather than just jerking with tiresome arpeggios) in that one song than Yngwie Egosteen did in his entire career.
I used to be a huge Yngwie's fan and definitely thought he was better. After decade of musical maturity and understanding Eddie's playing, I will say definitely not. Yngwie is very good on what he does. He chop his solos very well and he does have perfect pitch. But he's not a good rhythm guitarist. He's solos are limited to modes which he's good at but he lacks variety and definitely lacks depths and feelings. These are what Eddie Van Halen have captured and mastered.
It's OK. :) You don't need to apologize. I often find that many who favor Yngwie seem to have very same view I once had. And that is despite the fact that they may praise Yngwie's lead guitar playing, they have less consideration for rhythm guitar. I used to favor Yngwie for same reason. I remember complaining about Eddie's playing as not expanding his solos. I use to praise Yngwie being "too good" to collaborate with other musicians without recognizing that's also minus.
Yngwie is a freak at what he does....but you can only listen to him for so long before going insane. EVH is the total package: innovative, song writing ability, unique, etc. Who do you think more people would pay to see? End of story.
let me put it like this, all these super fast classical sounding guitarists, they all sound like they all were taught by the same teacher, then they introduce that style into metal.(not}.classical and metal collide musically.some players do it tastefully such as paul gilbert and keep it in the realm of rock, but once you stray to far from rock to classical sounds your straying too far.i wish alot more people discussed this subject bot not many people are hitting on this page

Moron like you are incapable to talk about guitar playing beside technique. This isn't to denounce the importance of technique. However speed just become speed when one have reached certain level. Yngwie did "master" Ritchie's solos "note by note" when he was in his early teen. But did Yngwie ever captured the level of depth, feelings and kind of lyricism that Ritchie possess? At age of 50s, Yngwie have yet to learn from Ritchie and he knows it too. He just doesn't know how.
The fact is that Yngwie can play thousands of notes in the "speed of light"(to use one of his song title) but Ritchie can blow Yngwie away with one note. Take a look at solos like "Temple Of The King" or "Over The Rainbow". Yngwie's definitely able to play the notes of these solos but he still can't mastered the level of feelings and depth that Ritchie have and still possesses. And anyone who think Hendrix is the best guitarist ever is "retarded"? Obviously you have no ears!
Yngwie had his heyday during 80's but after decades, he doesn't have any musical legacy unlike Eddie. Although there are guitarists who are influenced by Yngwie, he's definitely overshadowed by other masters like Hendrix, Page, Blackmore, Schenker and Eddie himself. His influential role doesn't seem to stretch wide like Eddie who have guitarists that play Thrash and Death Metal and still look up to Eddie as their major influence. All Yngwie seem to have left is his arpeggios and his ego.
However with Yngwie, he is one of most outstanding technical innovator but his excellence is limited to solos over riffs, virtuosity over feelings, classical over non-classical. He's definitely one of fastest player but he does sound like he's using speed to substitute his inability to slow down with feelings. His live performance seem to really show that he have very little regard for rhythm guitar parts. Compare to Eddie, Yngwie is horrible musical collaborator for group sound.
Eiddie Van Halen bits Yngwie Egosteen. Eddie is excellent in almost all aspects of guitar playing and song writing than Yngwie. Eddie have came up with one of the amazing riffs and his playing have more variety of techniques and ability to play with feelings. He can shred but at same time, he know how to chill and killer riffs with awesome rhythm guitar. He had his heyday during the 80's but he is still dominantly influential to guitarists of many rock and metal genre.
Yngwie is talented as fuck but here is why i would vote for Edward: yes malmsteen is fast but relies on classical scales, eddie on the other hand has some classical influences but was not classically trained, and has a bluesy feel and hot tone, can shred fast as well, and has some awesome reach with that pinky. I mean the guy sat in his room for years and taught himself everything with nothin but a guitar and a six pack of beer. malmsteen plays the guitar but edward uses it as an instrument
@evh4450 yngwie never went to school to be classically trained either......yngwie can also play blues and many ppl like his tone, and evh really isnt that fast wen hes not tapping....and practice..yngwie played 8 hrs a day he claims..... but i love both
Hmmmm, I like them both. Yngwie plays faster and is more accurate but sometimes he goes overboard. He does have some good songs unlike many other "shredders". On the other hand EVH has great tone and a funky kind of sound that’s often imitated but never duplicated. He also has a catalog of great hit songs and is an uber rhythm player. I go with EVH but I respect YM a lot.
@jabberwock11 I like them both too. However, I like EVH a little bit more. It's a matter of style: both are skilled, and Yngwie is a multi instrumentalist (something Eddie can't brag about). But EVH is catchy, and I find him plain irressistible.
@MultiDannyboy89 Eddie plays drums too though. But again I do like Yngwie a lot (I own many YM CDs) . In fact I would say most modern rock guitar virtuosos are a mix if EVH and YM.
@MultiDannyboy89 Eddie is also a multi instrumentalist...Piano.violin,drums, all of witch he's really good so I think he could brag about that. Both are good.different styles, etc.
Alright fuckers here is the real deal. When it comes to songwriting "the most important thing" it goes to Eddie Hands down. Joe Satarani " Chickenfoot" , Steve Vai "David Lee Roth Band Whitesnake etc, Ynwie " His own bands" None of these guitarist has ever come close to guitar mastery and songwriting at the same time like Eddie Van Halen. And all these guitarist kick ass. Joe Satarani has only done one album with a rock band so i will give him some time.
yngwie mops the floor with van halen's ass. evh is a good guitarist and definitley a virtuoso, but any decent guitarist can play his stuff. i have listened to van halen and his most complex song is eruption. whereas yngwie's songs are far more complex. take the song thats playing right now for example. (which by the way is trilogy suite op 5)
As a guitarist since '78,I remenber hearing them both for the first time. Eddie came out first and it was like gettin' your ass kicked listening to him, But I think Yngwie blew everybody's ass out of the water in '84. He was only like 21 when his first solo album came out and to me he kinda took over where Randy left off with the neo classical metal style. I love them both, great influences, but I vote Yngwie over anybody from that era,and even today.
We have a problem ... when you hear yngwie ... start thinking ... "How do I overcome it?", But when you hear EVH ... do nothing ... just enjoy good quality sound! :) But I vote for yngwie
yngwie is technically faster with his arpeggios and classical scales but his musical creativity is not even in the same ball park i mean have you ever seen Eddie play he trills entirely with his wrist.
naa i think Ywngie is better, eruption is not that hard to play, its just tremolo picking and tapping on one string , i dnt think a blues trained guitarist could be better than a Classical trained guitarist
eddie is the best guitar player of any generation. all these new guys dont hold a candle to eddie. i dont care if they play with all 10 fingers. eddie makes em look bad with his soloing ability, songwriting ability, 100 million records dont lie
im happy you are biased because i am too, eddie the great van halen is was the best fucking guitarist ever to play. such an innovater. these guys like friedman, broderick, etcc.... they dont have anything on edward van halen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@BlackWolfgang70 Hendrix? Have You Ever Heard Eddie Talk About Hendrix? I Haven't!!! Yngwie Said That Hendrix Isn't Music, He's Just Noise!!! Don't Believe Me? Look Up This Video "Yngwie Malmsteen Never Played Hendrix Riffs"
@DylanBStringer91 in another video he calls jimi the jesus of rock and the reason for him to start playing, and in that clip you told us to watch he actually says that he saw jimi smash a guitar and that was just noise. ''Yngwie talks about hendrix'' thats the video you should check out.
@Krisetto He May Have Caused Yngwie To Play "Elcetric Guitar", But What does Yngwie Play? Classical Music!!! Jimi Had No Musical Influence On Yngwie, Just Showsmanship!!! Case Closed!!!
@DylanBStringer91 and what does that have to do with anything? the point is that yngwie never said that jimi was just noise unlike what you claimed to have happened in that praticular video you told us to watch.
@DylanBStringer91 yes i've seen it a lot of times and? if this is about that musical thing, why should yngwie have taken musical influence from hendrix if he likes playing more classical stuff.
Only virtuoso guitartist I like is Eddie, Randy rhoads and joe satriani. Because their music make sense and they like having fun. Other virtuosos just try overdoing things trying to prove themselves. Other than that normal guitarists like Angus, Joe perry and Slash are good because they play for fun.
Eddie was more influential in the 80's, but Yngwie is more influential to today's rock and metal guitarists. Nobody does tapping anymore really, but all the new bands shred like Yngwie. I do admit to liking Yngwie more, but really only his first two albums and a few Alcatrazz and Steeler albums. Most of Yngwie's solos have sounded the same for years, I hate to say. Eddie, well, he doesn't even release anything anymore.
@RyuHayabusa06 yea you are right but a lot of guitarrist play tapping although the tapping now a days is harder than eddie did in the eighties i don't think that he can tap the arpegios like broderick or romeo anyway both are great and eddie is older so both are great but malmsteen is better at lest in this song
well, too difficult. Mb Yngwie. And I dont understand y Malmsteen for u sounds the same. Mb in last albums, but 1-st, 2, 3. It was so cool. Black Star, Little Savage and so ... , where the hell have u heard the same songs? give me a lot of, please....
Eddie was a bigger inspiration to me, but Yngwie is just a LITTLE better. Eddie does play a lot of different stuff, but even though alot of malmsteens stuff sounds the same, it is ALOT more difficult than what Eddie plays. Mmmmmmmm...i vote Malmsteen. Eddie still rocks though
u CANT compare the 2,.,its against guitar rules set down by the ancient gods of rock!!!,.,how DARE you!!!,, i love yngwie but i must say ,.,eddie was a BIGGER inspiration ,.,every guitarist looks up to him,.,., but STILL 2 different styles,.,u musnt compare them........................p.s. i think edwards better
i don't really mnd thm i'm not dfendng thm, what fcks me is that a little twat who dsnt know anything of van halen and nither of yngwie writtes without having the foggiest idea.
so dear frnd lrn to play lrn abt msic and thn u can say smthng,
by the way it's not edward van hallen it's Edvierd van hallen you mppet.
who the hell do you thnk u are? how can u say that yngwie is a untalented player when probably u dn't even know how to play the guitar or even what a guitar is you shgger, why don't u try a sng u flm it and hng it in u tube lets see who is ntalented .
@skrawnySabertooth EVH was active long before Malmsteen? I respect both guitarist only Malmsteen should change his attitude.. he's much too "Í"m the guitar god, worship me now!!" EVH has a unique style though, never seen anything like it.
u already had your opinion on whos better. why do u have do disagree on the people who thinks yngwie is better i notice u that on your last comments. but u know what nevermind i dont want to start a fight
Yngwie is faster than eddie. NO DOUBT. ut it doesnt make him better becuase eddie has more of that style he puts in his music and Yngwie likes a composer almost
Though choice. I think Malmsteen can play things that EVH can't. On the other hand EVH has overall more interesting solos, has a more wicked sound and is a better songwriter/composer. Malmsteen isn't bad in those categories though. I like his stuff better than say Steve Vai who is just bland to me. I guess I'd take EVH if you put a gun to my head but again I like Malmsteen a lot too and own several of his CDs.
Van Halen isn't really a bad guitarist, but he and Yngwie are on two totally different levels of musicianship.
Eddie's playing is far less beautiful, and just doesn't make quite as much sense. Yngwie compositions are much better, and his playing is beautiful. He also has far superior tone and technique. This isn't really a matter of opinion, this just isn't a great comparison.
Yeah your right you cant compare these two, yngwie is fast without tapping, and eddie taps on all his solos. and dont forget malmsteen played eddies eruption solo with one hand, malmsteen destroys him.
You are so fucking stupid. You don't know shit about guitar players, and you don't know shit about comparing things. You just don't know shit about anything. Dumbass.
Your just mad that you know your fav cant play for shit, all of his shit sounds the fucking same, every single time its the same fucking shit, that gay ass sound i fucking hate it, and we both know the yngwie cant play at all, and we both know the EVH is and will always be the best, Ignorant Buttfuck.
Who said Yngwie was my favorite? When did i ever say that? See, now you're making accusations. Yngwie can play. He is very good, so is EVH. You can't say one is better than the other. The only thing you can compare here is speed. And if you want to compare speed, Yngwie will be the best. Eddie can't play as fast. But that is not what you're comparing. You're comparing skill. Which is stupid because they are DIFFRENT. You are fucking stupid. End of story.
Eddie van halen is the best, its that plain and simple, I admit, yngwie is fast but he needs a new style, it got old the first time i heard it, Eddie is always making new syles, so thats why Eddie is better, Its just that Simple

His live performance seem to really show that he have very little regard for rhythm guitar parts. Compare to Eddie, Yngwie is horrible musical collaborator for group sound.
unorthodoxtrotsky 8 months ago

I mean the guy sat in his room for years and taught himself everything with nothin but a guitar and a six pack of beer. malmsteen plays the guitar but edward uses it as an instrument
evh4450 9 months ago
@evh4450 yngwie never went to school to be classically trained either......yngwie can also play blues and many ppl like his tone, and evh really isnt that fast wen hes not tapping....and practice..yngwie played 8 hrs a day he claims..... but i love both
westjt17 8 months ago
Hmmmm, I like them both. Yngwie plays faster and is more accurate but sometimes he goes overboard. He does have some good songs unlike many other "shredders". On the other hand EVH has great tone and a funky kind of sound that’s often imitated but never duplicated. He also has a catalog of great hit songs and is an uber rhythm player. I go with EVH but I respect YM a lot.
jabberwock11 10 months ago 2
@jabberwock11 I like them both too. However, I like EVH a little bit more. It's a matter of style: both are skilled, and Yngwie is a multi instrumentalist (something Eddie can't brag about). But EVH is catchy, and I find him plain irressistible.
MultiDannyboy89 7 months ago
@MultiDannyboy89 "something Eddie can't brag about" - Sure he can, he plays keyboards :)
jabberwock11 7 months ago
@jabberwock11 True, but (and not to say that Yngwie is better) Yngwie plays cello and keyboards (unless I'm mistaken). But again, I go for Eddie.
MultiDannyboy89 7 months ago
@MultiDannyboy89 Eddie plays drums too though. But again I do like Yngwie a lot (I own many YM CDs) . In fact I would say most modern rock guitar virtuosos are a mix if EVH and YM.
jabberwock11 7 months ago

DylanBStringer91 1 year ago
@DylanBStringer91 in another video he calls jimi the jesus of rock and the reason for him to start playing, and in that clip you told us to watch he actually says that he saw jimi smash a guitar and that was just noise. ''Yngwie talks about hendrix'' thats the video you should check out.
Krisetto 1 year ago
@Krisetto He May Have Caused Yngwie To Play "Elcetric Guitar", But What does Yngwie Play? Classical Music!!! Jimi Had No Musical Influence On Yngwie, Just Showsmanship!!! Case Closed!!!
DylanBStringer91 1 year ago
@DylanBStringer91 and what does that have to do with anything? the point is that yngwie never said that jimi was just noise unlike what you claimed to have happened in that praticular video you told us to watch.

@Krisetto search this video: "yngwie i never played hendrix riffs"
DylanBStringer91 1 year ago
@DylanBStringer91 yes i've seen it a lot of times and? if this is about that musical thing, why should yngwie have taken musical influence from hendrix if he likes playing more classical stuff.

GNRslash28 1 year ago
Only virtuoso guitartist I like is Eddie, Randy rhoads and joe satriani. Because their music make sense and they like having fun. Other virtuosos just try overdoing things trying to prove themselves. Other than that normal guitarists like Angus, Joe perry and Slash are good because they play for fun.
osricdh 1 year ago
@osricdh All those Guitarists are great, the only one i cant stand is Buckethead hahaha
DropkickMurphys12 1 year ago
Eddie was more influential in the 80's, but Yngwie is more influential to today's rock and metal guitarists. Nobody does tapping anymore really, but all the new bands shred like Yngwie. I do admit to liking Yngwie more, but really only his first two albums and a few Alcatrazz and Steeler albums. Most of Yngwie's solos have sounded the same for years, I hate to say. Eddie, well, he doesn't even release anything anymore.
RyuHayabusa06 1 year ago
@RyuHayabusa06 yea you are right but a lot of guitarrist play tapping although the tapping now a days is harder than eddie did in the eighties i don't think that he can tap the arpegios like broderick or romeo anyway both are great and eddie is older so both are great but malmsteen is better at lest in this song
jhonas43 1 year ago
well, too difficult.

Eddie still rocks though

narutoguy56 2 years ago
Yngwie is faster than eddie. NO DOUBT. ut it doesnt make him better becuase eddie has more of that style he puts in his music and Yngwie likes a composer almost
firelord276 2 years ago 3
Yngwie is faster, but Eddie just has a variety, Yngwie sounds the same in all of his solos
DropkickMurphys12 2 years ago
Though choice. I think Malmsteen can play things that EVH can't. On the other hand EVH has overall more interesting solos, has a more wicked sound and is a better songwriter/composer. Malmsteen isn't bad in those categories though. I like his stuff better than say Steve Vai who is just bland to me. I guess I'd take EVH if you put a gun to my head but again I like Malmsteen a lot too and own several of his CDs.
jabberwock11 2 years ago 2
Yea im a huge EVH fan, i just think that Malmsteens slols sound the same haha
DropkickMurphys12 2 years ago
Van Halen isn't really a bad guitarist, but he and Yngwie are on two totally different levels of musicianship.
Eddie's playing is far less beautiful, and just doesn't make quite as much sense. Yngwie compositions are much better, and his playing is beautiful. He also has far superior tone and technique. This isn't really a matter of opinion, this just isn't a great comparison.
MattJ65s 2 years ago
edward?

MetallicGod07 2 years ago
Your just mad that you know your fav cant play for shit, all of his shit sounds the fucking same, every single time its the same fucking shit, that gay ass sound i fucking hate it, and we both know the yngwie cant play at all, and we both know the EVH is and will always be the best, Ignorant Buttfuck.
DropkickMurphys12 2 years ago
Who said Yngwie was my favorite? When did i ever say that? See, now you're making accusations. Yngwie can play. He is very good, so is EVH. You can't say one is better than the other. The only thing you can compare here is speed. And if you want to compare speed, Yngwie will be the best. Eddie can't play as fast. But that is not what you're comparing. You're comparing skill. Which is stupid because they are DIFFRENT. You are fucking stupid. End of story.
MetallicGod07 2 years ago
Eddie van halen is the best, its that plain and simple, I admit, yngwie is fast but he needs a new style, it got old the first time i heard it, Eddie is always making new syles, so thats why Eddie is better, Its just that Simple
