Btw, this video rocks...i enjoyed listening! a sort of greatest bass hits by 1 of my favorite 80s bass players ;-) the other one is David J (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets). I'll have many more lines by them to come (just 1 atm)...
@Leandrodk11 I programmed the backing track in cubase, the drums were a mix of toontracks EZ Drummer and Hallion player, synths were Hallion Player and Cubase's Mono synth.
What pedal should I go for to get this sound, rather than the original Clone theory? is there anything similar/cheaper?! I hear about the current Clone Theory model being a very different sounding pedal, so I'm not sure if I should go for that or something else. It doesn't need to sound EXACT, but I want that spidery gothy post punk sound for my bass.
@airmiami Any decent chorus pedal will do, the Boss super chorus is good. just get plenty of depth and a medium speed then tweak away, for a bit more bite put a distortion pedal before it, nothing too harsh, and your bottom end will be massive, if you like that kind of thing!
@JedStephens1968 I've heard the Small Clone for bass on youtube, and it sounds awful. Same with the Boss - or would it be better to use a guitar pedal rather than a bass one, to get that specific sound?
@airmiami the Boss pedal I used to use was a guitar one Super chorus CH-1, sounded OK but nothing like the old clone theory, in a mix I doubt most people would be able to tell the difference really, just us fussy b*stards;-)
@Skartasss Ihave a line6 bass pod xt live, which I just use to add a bit of distortion and an 80's electroharmonix clone theory chorus pedal, which is the authentic Hooky sound.
@JedStephens1968 I never understand why people ask for tabs when they are being shown in video very clearly how to play something. And btw, thanks for making this video.
haha... yah, tabs are kinda becoming unnecessary now. I always learned songs by ear, but in the 90s when tab pages were rampant, that was really the only way to show people how to play songs. But now days with video, this is the BEST way to learn, aside from having a private lesson. I always learned just from watching MTV videos anyway (when they showed them) & keeping my eyes glued to the guitar/bass players, if i could see them playing on a video or live performance!
@giguchan The black semi acoustic is made by Chriss Eccleshall, it's based on the Gibson 335 but with Yamaha pick ups and electrics, this is only used live, not in the studio, in the studio he uses a Yamaha bb1200, which is no longer made, which is what I think you may be thinking is the fender, have a look at the video for the perfect kiss, he also uses both live and in the studio a Shergold Marathon 6 six string bass, which was used on Blue Monday and many others.
this is awesome, great tones spot on. Do you think you could cover blue monday bass line, I know its done with a 6 string bass but you have a lot of talent.
First a line 6 bass pod XT live, which I just use for a bit of distortion, then Electro harmonix clone theory chorus pedal, the original 70's - 80'a model, not the new ones which are a bit "low calorie" if you get what I mean.
It's hard to describe the difference, you get people saying all kinds of things like more creamy, fat but still crisp all kinds of weird nonsense, the best thing to do is asses whether you are happy with what you hear, if so, what does it matter. in the mix i doubt anyone could tell the difference anyway.
i wish i could play as well as this and maybe my hearing is damaged after years of live gigs but isnt there something wrong with the strength of this guitar? or is it out of tune.
could you send me a personal message by the way with the rest of the transmission tab? i can obviously play the first part its just thatbridge, where ever i look its different , would be really greatful if you could send it me :)
the main thing is a chorus pedal, a boss super chorus is half way there, but the real thing is an 1970's electroharmonix clone theory, but they're getting harder to get hold of.
the best kind of bass line...

do they just not sound the same? I have a new one that I'm fairly happy with, but I've never used an original gangsta clone theory myself.

I have a CloneTheory reissue, but it is very noiseless; and I prefer the little DanElectro Milkshake chorus wich is perfect and also cheap.

Great work on these. You just need to get your bass a little lower and you'll have Hooky to a T.
