Thank you for all of your responses! I apologize for the delay in getting back to you guys I am pretty bad with checking my youtube for any type of updates but I will make sure to update the whole "F3 versus EF3." Thanks for that information! I didn't realize that scale was no longer used!
I'm from tornado alley (Nebraska) and have been chasing storms for over 2 decades. Congrats to the guy videoing and the mgr. of the place for opening his door for strangers to come in. Yes, it was refreshing to not see complete idiots when facing these events. The only healthy critique I would offer, and I know it's unsolicited, but you guys were surrounded by a lot of glass. Behind tornadoes there are some wicked downdraft winds that can shatter windows even when the funnel has passed. Thanks!
@WickedTornado I was the one who taped it. Actually caught this footage from my Blackberry Torch so I was very surprised at the quality that came out. Trust me we were all very very stupid for standing so close to those windows. We were just in utter awe when we started seeing that funnel form. It isn't everyday we see that happen, so to see it I had to catch it. I'm absolutely fascinated with weather, and I would love to be able to chase storms this was the closest I could get!
@Schwarze999 Massachusetts dose not have tornado sirens cause we don't get lots of tornadoes like in the Midwest but i wish we had some tornado sirens in MA
@kylex102 Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. 7 months later and you can still see the destruction. Nothing compared to those families in the midwest so thankfully we are very fortunate. God bless!
@Freebleepers we do get them but not as strong as the Springfield tornado its was an EF3 i just cant believe it was an EF3 Connecticut (Per year1.5) (By area)2.8---Maine (Per year 1.9) (By area0.5) ------Massachusetts (Per year2.5) (By area2.4)---- New Hampshire (Per year 1.5) (By area1.6) ----Rhode Island (Per year0.2) (By area1.1) ---Vermont (Per year 0.7) By area)(0.7
I remember seeing the tornado as I was just about to iron my school uniform. I was lucky I didn't lose any power. Now I'll be expecting Irene in a few hours as I'm typing.
You practically had the same type of positioning on the storm that I had when I filmed a tornado in Garr Corner Oklahoma. It passed by me just like in this video.
@Torn80cj I was just very lucky that the funnel didn't come toward us. We unfortunately didn't take this thing to be serious. I mean who would? It's not everyday we get a funnel through here, maybe a water spout or two off the ocean but not this. That's really what we figured it was but then we saw the aftermath.
It actually hit EF3 just over the river in West Springfield. The area just before New Bridge St had some EF3 damage. Most was EF2. TTornados are not unknown to New England, particularly Western MA/CT. Massachusetts actually rates in the top 5 of the nation for tornado occurance per square mile. Yes you get a lot of them in Ok, KS etc, but they are huge areas. Thanks for this video and contacting skywarn to make it available.
Thanks everyone. This was the very beginning of it, so the intensity grew as it made landfall off the river. As it left our area, that's where it became an F3. Just up the road the destruction is devastating.
@GamingPalooza I know. It's just incredibly rare to see something of this magnitude in this area of the country. But it doesn't surprise me, seeing as how this year has brought nothing but unique weather patterns to all areas of the world. One things for sure, you'll see a lot of people run out and buy all sorts of new insurance they've never had before!
I live in West Springfield and I was on route 5 and I saw it go over the memorial bridge and behind the Monarch building

It's an EF-3, not an F3. The F (Fujita) system was taken out in 2007 in favor of the EF (Enhanced Fujita) system.
