Through this whole movie I live absolutely loved how he showed her so much love holding her hands smelling her hair he treats her so delicatley and sweet and gentle ha sorry I keep going on and on but I love that Gwynplaine and Dea forever <3
@lexiepz1 Agreed. I love how sweet and gentle they are with each other, but, at the same time, I like to think they made the most of their evening if Ursus left them alone for the night on the ship. ;)
I adore the novel's portrayal of their love as the delicate, ethereal love of soul mates, but passion that deep usually manifests itself in other desires as well. Plus, part of me wants to see them in a house with little Gwynplaines and Deas running around. :D I think they'd be great parents!
What a fabulous, engaging film. I thought Dea's character could have been a little deeper, but she doesn't have much to do in the film. Gwynplaine is wonderful, and Homo is the best dog (and I think the best canine actor) that ever was!
- POSSIBLE SPOILER - love the fact that at the end, not everything is "perfect" but there's still a happy ending!
@Blakeneyd If you loved the movie, I highly recommend the book. It's a wondeful read; the language Hugo uses to describe Gwynplaine and Dea's love is absolutely beautiful. And the book delves very deeply into Gwynplaine's emotions--his pain of constantly being laughed at, his love for Dea and how he feels she's his salvation, etc. Dea isn't as developed in the book--you kinda have to read between the lines with her--but she's still a very captivating character, at least, to me. :)
@Abryzof423 That's what made those old movies so special...they actually gave us characters to care about. The forgot all about that when special effects started to take over.
the pet dog was name homo, I wonder was that the reason why tcm did not include this film on the Conrad Veidt film festival. Fear it may offend the gay audience , if I'm right then they are crazy, that channel subtly politically correct
I ve been appreciating films like Nosferatu and Golem for many years now , but today was the first time for me to see this masterpiece..Blessed are the uploaders, the internet and all movie bloggers who love the silent ones.
@sapph920 Im sorry, i didn't intend to. It wasn't just me who wrote it, well i would think that the ending of a very famous 142 year old book would be well known. Sorry, truly.
I wish it kept the original ending I am hearing about, the foley of American cinema is its need to have everything uplifting in the end. Down notes can be so much more impact-full.
@sanjidparvez actually in the Victor Hugo's novel Gwynplaine and Dea die in the end, so the original novel is rather a tragical one than one with a happy ending.
Thank you for that bit of information. I am glad to hear it/ I would definitely prefer Hugo's version over this one. The “And - Everyone lives happily ever after” shtick doesn’t fit well in this story.
Most people dont realize that they constructed much more elaborate sets for some of these silents than they did for most of the later sound films. Sound films of the 30s had to be filmed on a sound stage, with very limited space, & they couldnt utilize crane or dollies for the camera much of the time. For 'Hunchback' the built a whole section of Paris with the cathedral Notre Dame even
Actually, in the book, Gwynplaine and Dea are briefly reunited, but then, Dea suddenly dies of natural causes and then Gwynplaine throws himself in the sea. Just FYI. :)
I think that Tim Burton should do a remake with Jonny Depp as Gwynplaine. It would mean that I could talk about it with my friends, a lot of them don't want to watch it because it's silent and not in colour. They don't know what they are missing!
A friend of mine and I are planning on doing a film version someday, with him as Gwynplaine and me as Dea. Also, a play adaptation I have written will have its world premiere in San Diego at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza on April 28th and will run til May 2nd. If you would like more information, send me a private message. :) Glad to see I'm not the only one interested in seeing this story revived; it's a wonderful tale. Bravo to Victor Hugo!
I just wish that people would be more open minded about silent movies. I can understand them being a bit dubious because I was once like that, but I watched the silent Phantom of the Opera and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I know the feeling; people SHOULD be more open-minded. I've seen the silent version of "Phantom", too, and loved it. I've also seen "The Penalty" (another Lon Chaney film) and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (yet ANOTHER Chaney movie :) ) and I do agree--silents deserve much more respect and admiration than they get from today's modern audiences.
@powergirl07 a Tim Burton version would be awsome!! I love Johnny Depp but to honest he's a older then gwynplaines supposed to be(in the book he's 25).AND I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE DONT WATCH THESE OLD MOVIES. THEY'ER GREAT MOVIES BUT THEY DONT BOTHER BECAUSE THERE SO OLD!!!!!!! WHATS THE MATTER WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!......sorry go carried away
this being a silent film makes it even better, no words needed with the amazing acting and characters.. This is surely one of the best films ever made ! PS.HOMO was a great actor too, hands down smarter than Lassie....
I'd like to add that I liked the score and the special vocal effects using---although it was a bit repetitive, esp. during the carnival scene. At first I was wondering, why isn't this a sound picture? But now, I think dialogue would have ruined the "silent" nature of this film. It's a masterpiece, through and through.
I read that Dea and Gynplaine were supposed to die? Thus to set off the gloomy atmosphere that had been presented throughout the film...what happened where's the sad ending?
Yes, that is how Victor Hugo wrote it. Dea dies and then Gynplaine drowns himself. In fact, I was under the impression that they kept the ending. Or at least that's what I read in a summary.
I loved this film, with one exception...I think that the people who did the post-production on the soundtrack could have done without so much of the "crowd scene" noise in a number of sequences. They went a bit overboard with it. And yes, I understand that the soundtrack was made before its 1928 release, and that the major studios were still in a transition phase as far as moving from silent films to "talkies."
I think it's better than the movies of nowaydays (of that kind of genre) I liked it more than Rome and Juliet... The man who laughs is a true movie, with true feelings...

Thankyou very much for posting this, I have been wanting to see this for years. Superb film, ahead of its time in a lot of ways. Thanks again! Oh, and I want to buy a german shepherd and call it Homo. That dog is made of awesome!
Just when I thought that no US film could equal the German Expressionist classics - you give us THIS! Whole lot of silent technique culminating here! Actors speed up & slow down time; build tensions to huge heights; the camera, costumes, crowd scenes, supporting actors - all in there full tilt delivering the emotional message - which resonate far beyond the rational minds immediate ability to decipher!
Paul Leni was a German Expressionist director, though :P... But yes, I agree, I'm a huge fan of G.Ex films, and this US film is a truly excellent film, absolutely wonderful in every aspect.
I feel so priviledged to have seen this film. I thoroughly enjoyed Mary Philbin and Conrad Veidt's performances in other films, and to see them together in a film directed by an excellent director... well, it's completely mind-blowing.
I'd also like to thank you for posting this film here. My grandfather once told me about this story, when I was a kid, and I never thought about it again. I'm really glad for watching this.
I've loved this movie even before it was on DVD, and am so glad it is more widly available. If only more silemnts were saved and restored this way ^_^
especially considering that Gwynplaine is "nice" Bob Kane, just took the "look" of Gwynplaine, like the lanky appearance, and the continuous grin. Then just decided to make him a paranoid schizophrenic.
SO beautiful! I'm glad they gave it a happy ending. Such a sad love story, the story in the book can almost be compared to Romeo and Juliette. And it's so sad how there is a stigma with Gwynplaine. It's just a big smile!
It is uncommon to see silent motion pictures of this caliber at all, much less on YouTube. So many of them no longer exist, or exist only in partial or decayed form. How fortunate we are to be able to experience this out-and-out masterpiece of theatrical, poetic and cinematic expression. Incidentally, speaking of pieces, Baclanov was smokin hot in this picture.
Really THANKS FOR POSTING. I'm so happy to see this great film. I love the novel too; thanks the end is different! You?ve given me a beautiful day, THANK YOU AGAIN.
who marked geekella as spam? she's right, this movie is awesome!
It is the first silent movie I've ever seen, and I loved it. Now I can't wait to read Victor Hugo's The man who laugh :), besides I MUST watch other silent films like nosferatu and dr caligari, etc/. :)
Hi, if you happen to live in or visit the UK next month: we're showing this movie in Newcastle, outdoor screening in Heaton Park, 27 August, with live piano accompaniment.
That's the first silent movie that made my heart ache lol. I was fussing at it when Dea was led away from the door of the house of Lords. I was literally holding my breath-going "JUMP IN THE WATER,STUPID! AHH HE AIN'T GONNA MAKE IT." I mean i was actually yelling at Gwyplaine before I knew it. LOL. This is now my new favorite movie....And for the actors to perform the way they did using only expression.I bet if they were raised from the dead today and had to act again- they would be unbeatable.
This is the first silent movie that I watched and I gotta say I love this movie. Thank you for the upload. After watching this I'm interested to see other silent movies that are great classics. Any suggestions?
Thank you for posting this beautiful love story. Conrad Veidt was a magnificent actor. Maya

lisawang99 2 years ago 2
In the story written by Victor Hugo, Dea apparently commits suicide before Gywnplaine finds her and Ursus.
Knowing her beloved was gone, Gwinplaine throws himself into the sea to die, since he lost the only thing that mattered to him.
Many adapted novels had happy endings on the movies; otherwise, the films would be too depressing and would scare the public away.

Gwynplaine inspired The Joker... but he isn't The Joker.
brittnga 3 years ago 6
especially considering that Gwynplaine is "nice" Bob Kane, just took the "look" of Gwynplaine, like the lanky appearance, and the continuous grin. Then just decided to make him a paranoid schizophrenic.
yermomsaskank 3 years ago 2
SO beautiful! I'm glad they gave it a happy ending. Such a sad love story, the story in the book can almost be compared to Romeo and Juliette. And it's so sad how there is a stigma with Gwynplaine. It's just a big smile!
Thank you for uploading this! :D

Jorzn84 3 years ago
Metropolis, Nosferatu, Sunrise, City Lights, Battleship Potemkin... plus The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which also stars Conrad Veidt...
And basically everything on silentfilmdemocracy's channel, there are a lot of great movies on there.
