  • Thank you for posting this beautiful love story. Conrad Veidt was a magnificent actor. Maya

  • Through this whole movie I live absolutely loved how he showed her so much love holding her hands smelling her hair he treats her so delicatley and sweet and gentle ha sorry I keep going on and on but I love that Gwynplaine and Dea forever <3

  • @lexiepz1 Agreed. I love how sweet and gentle they are with each other, but, at the same time, I like to think they made the most of their evening if Ursus left them alone for the night on the ship. ;)

I adore the novel's portrayal of their love as the delicate, ethereal love of soul mates, but passion that deep usually manifests itself in other desires as well. Plus, part of me wants to see them in a house with little Gwynplaines and Deas running around. :D I think they'd be great parents!

  • OK I'm crying right now.....GREATEST MOVIE EVER.......Excuse me ....I have to blow my nose .....

  • Dea!

    Dea!

    Homo!

Heh, that just made me laugh.

  • Oh. My. God. That ending was the SHIT! Especially with that final shot of them holding each other and looking all shimmery

  • This is Hollywood made by Germans. Great Movie and Art together

  • This is officially my favourite film! <3

  • I love how Homo's tail comes out of the water and starts waging at 8:35.

    Always and forever. Hollywood.

  • What a fabulous, engaging film. I thought Dea's character could have been a little deeper, but she doesn't have much to do in the film. Gwynplaine is wonderful, and Homo is the best dog (and I think the best canine actor) that ever was!

    - POSSIBLE SPOILER - love the fact that at the end, not everything is "perfect" but there's still a happy ending!

  • @Blakeneyd If you loved the movie, I highly recommend the book. It's a wondeful read; the language Hugo uses to describe Gwynplaine and Dea's love is absolutely beautiful. And the book delves very deeply into Gwynplaine's emotions--his pain of constantly being laughed at, his love for Dea and how he feels she's his salvation, etc. Dea isn't as developed in the book--you kinda have to read between the lines with her--but she's still a very captivating character, at least, to me. :)

  • HOMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8'D perritooooooooo ♥ ♥

  • My new favorite movie :') <3

  • HOMO IS THE BEST DOG!!! IM SO HAPPY THEY WERE REUNITED! AHAH this is one of those films that just makes you thankful for who your are!

  • Perfect end

  • Dea just brings out Gwynplaine real joy. It's beautiful.

  • 8:15 dont cry, dont cry, dont cry ... OMG ITS SO BEATIFUL *cries*

  • eyes say the most truely emotions! they are mirror of soul! perfect!!

  • awesome! i cant even stand fantastic four for 15 minutes but i watched this entire silent film!

  • @Abryzof423 That's what made those old movies so special...they actually gave us characters to care about. The forgot all about that when special effects started to take over.

  • the pet dog was name homo, I wonder was that the reason why tcm did not include this film on the Conrad Veidt film festival. Fear it may offend the gay audience , if I'm right then they are crazy, that channel subtly politically correct

  • And the first Joker not die

  • awww <3333333

  • Good Puppy

  • ending is different in book. They both die

  • 12 years later, income The Joker

  • Thanks for posting this beautiful film I love it ( and Hugo´s novel too)

  • Awesome!

I ve been appreciating films like Nosferatu and Golem for many years now , but today was the first time for me to see this masterpiece..Blessed are the uploaders, the internet and all movie bloggers who love the silent ones.

  • Great upload, great movie, great acting!

The first silence movie I have ever seen and I loved it! To bad they die in the book. :-(!

I wanna read the book, I assume they die because of the comments be neat me.

    Awesome acting Conrad Veidt! Excellent!!

  • That has to be the most bad ass dog ever.

  • I love better this ending on the movie as on the book! Great film, a masterwork!

  • Comment removed

  • ...a little later everyone dies the end....dont belive me? read the book....FABULOUS MOVIE! SO BEAUTIFUL!

  • @LolitaLexi

    Thanks for ruining it.

You really should put a spoiler warning for a 142 year old book.

  • @sapph920 Im sorry, i didn't intend to. It wasn't just me who wrote it, well i would think that the ending of a very famous 142 year old book would be well known. Sorry, truly.

  • I love a happy ending....

  • GOOD DOG!

  • 7.26 - best title card in movie history!

  • Did you know the book has a different ending. The book's ending was horrible because both gwymplaine and dea die in the book. I really hated that!

  • 1 Person Dislikes Homo

  • Couple moments later, after the end of this movie... Dea suddenly dies and Gwynplaine commits suicide.

... yeah, this movie has an awesome sense of when to end.

  • I wish it kept the original ending I am hearing about, the foley of American cinema is its need to have everything uplifting in the end. Down notes can be so much more impact-full.

  • I wish Gwynplaine and Dea marry!

  • Good Homo :D kill that jerk....!!!

  • 8:13 good job HOMO kill that baster

  • 8:12 GOOD BOY HOMO, GOOD BOY! Good doggie!

  • Sorry, Homo, you just tasted human blood. Gonna have to put you down now....

  • I'm kind of glad that the movie ends before the whole part where Dea dies of somesickness and Gwynplaine drowns himself.

I mean, keeping to the original story is great, but sometimes a happy ending is nice too.

  • This is a beautiful film. Thank you for posting it.

  • A beautiful story! Truly, 'tis one of the greatest works of Victor Hugo.

  • I almost wanted to laugh at the dog's name...but i have a new profound respect for this film now. GO HOMO!

  • I'm clapping with a tear in my eye! Bravo! Viva Conrad Veidt!

  • @sailormoon1969 - me too!! lol - Such a great film!!

  • A very solid film. Doesn't feel like a silent movie at all. Great! Thanks for uploading.

  • ..and finally Gwynplaine laughs the laugh of happiness. Very beautiful film. Thanks a lot for sharing here.

  • @sanjidparvez actually in the Victor Hugo's novel Gwynplaine and Dea die in the end, so the original novel is rather a tragical one than one with a happy ending.

  • @gamitech0

Thank you for that bit of information. I am glad to hear it/ I would definitely prefer Hugo's version over this one. The “And - Everyone lives happily ever after” shtick doesn’t fit well in this story.

  • Oh my gosh! I love this movie! Homo is the best dog ever and they are such a sweet couple! That is the best romance story ever!

  • Beautiful!!

  • LOVE in its purest way !!!!!!!

What a film - it knocked me off my feet.

Its tiniest part possesses more emotion than all modern films together !!!!

That awesome loving couple: That beautiful blind angel and that brave tall man.

Not he's a monster, but all arrogant people are.

  • Bravo!

  • Most people dont realize that they constructed much more elaborate sets for some of these silents than they did for most of the later sound films. Sound films of the 30s had to be filmed on a sound stage, with very limited space, & they couldnt utilize crane or dollies for the camera much of the time. For 'Hunchback' the built a whole section of Paris with the cathedral Notre Dame even

  • wow.... Not exactly what I was expecting, but a great film, nontheless! :) ...absolutely loved Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine - brilliant!. :)

  • Someone that can send some good links to some Mary Philbin interviews? can't find it

i'd love to see it !!

    Thanks a lot !!!

  • *his beloved, not her.

    Sorry.

  • In the story written by Victor Hugo, Dea apparently commits suicide before Gywnplaine finds her and Ursus.

Knowing her beloved was gone, Gwinplaine throws himself into the sea to die, since he lost the only thing that mattered to him.

Many adapted novels had happy endings on the movies; otherwise, the films would be too depressing and would scare the public away.

  • @lisawang99

Actually, in the book, Gwynplaine and Dea are briefly reunited, but then, Dea suddenly dies of natural causes and then Gwynplaine throws himself in the sea. Just FYI. :)

  • I think that Tim Burton should do a remake with Jonny Depp as Gwynplaine. It would mean that I could talk about it with my friends, a lot of them don't want to watch it because it's silent and not in colour. They don't know what they are missing!

  • @powergirl07

A friend of mine and I are planning on doing a film version someday, with him as Gwynplaine and me as Dea. Also, a play adaptation I have written will have its world premiere in San Diego at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza on April 28th and will run til May 2nd. If you would like more information, send me a private message. :) Glad to see I'm not the only one interested in seeing this story revived; it's a wonderful tale. Bravo to Victor Hugo!

  • Really!? That's fantastic!

I just wish that people would be more open minded about silent movies. I can understand them being a bit dubious because I was once like that, but I watched the silent Phantom of the Opera and thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Thanks!

I know the feeling; people SHOULD be more open-minded. I've seen the silent version of "Phantom", too, and loved it. I've also seen "The Penalty" (another Lon Chaney film) and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (yet ANOTHER Chaney movie :) ) and I do agree--silents deserve much more respect and admiration than they get from today's modern audiences.

  • @powergirl07 a Tim Burton version would be awsome!! I love Johnny Depp but to honest he's a older then gwynplaines supposed to be(in the book he's 25).AND I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE DONT WATCH THESE OLD MOVIES. THEY'ER GREAT MOVIES BUT THEY DONT BOTHER BECAUSE THERE SO OLD!!!!!!! WHATS THE MATTER WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!......sorry go carried away

  • this being a silent film makes it even better, no words needed with the amazing acting and characters.. This is surely one of the best films ever made ! PS.HOMO was a great actor too, hands down smarter than Lassie....

  • I think this is my favorite silent film, Conrad Veidt is the sexiest thing I've ever seen(not so much in THIS particular film)!

  • That was so epic!!!

  • THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER!!!

  • You are not alone. <3

  • Wow... I haven't cried from a movie like this since the Brave Lil' Toaster. My masculinity is pretty puny right now.

Amazing film, thank you so much for uploading.

  • thanks for posting

this is such a great film!

  • Gwynplaine and Dea are the most perfect case of true love that has ever been displayed on film. TAKE THAT DISNEY!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 8:13 YAY HOMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the ending is beautiul even if the book is written differently

  • I personally like the happy ending better.

  • Same here, and I'm known for loving tragedy.

  • thanks for posyting

  • what a great movcie thanks for posting

  • Awesome movie, loved it.

  • Who's a good Homo?

Yes you are! Yes you are!

  • I'd like to add that I liked the score and the special vocal effects using---although it was a bit repetitive, esp. during the carnival scene. At first I was wondering, why isn't this a sound picture? But now, I think dialogue would have ruined the "silent" nature of this film. It's a masterpiece, through and through.

  • That dog is awesome! Way to go, Homo! :)

Wow, that was a great film. Thanks for sharing, silentfilmdemocracy!

  • Awsome movie :')

Thank you so much for uploading this!

  • Thank you for the upload.

  • I read that Dea and Gynplaine were supposed to die? Thus to set off the gloomy atmosphere that had been presented throughout the film...what happened where's the sad ending?

  • Yes, that is how Victor Hugo wrote it. Dea dies and then Gynplaine drowns himself. In fact, I was under the impression that they kept the ending. Or at least that's what I read in a summary.

  • Same here, that's what I read in the summary!

  • Ah, I'm so confused. Was it left out in the posting of this video?

  • I did NOT expect a happy ending XD

    But I'm glad ;)

This is a beautifull movie, realy moving.

  • like basically everyone's already said: thanks a lot for uploading & Homo FTW =P

  • I loved this film, with one exception...I think that the people who did the post-production on the soundtrack could have done without so much of the "crowd scene" noise in a number of sequences. They went a bit overboard with it. And yes, I understand that the soundtrack was made before its 1928 release, and that the major studios were still in a transition phase as far as moving from silent films to "talkies."

  • i really enjoyed this film, thanks for uploading it. : )

  • Thank you for uploading!

    I really enjoyed this movie.

  • How I love this movie. And the ending was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Thank you for uploading.

  • Awesome Film T_T

    Thx for uploading it

I think it's better than the movies of nowaydays (of that kind of genre) I liked it more than Rome and Juliet... The man who laughs is a true movie, with true feelings...

    Dea...She's so beautiful

  • I absolutely LOVED this film! Thank you very much for uploading it. They haven't made movies this fantastic in a LONG time.

  • I loved it, truly a masterpiece! Conrad Veidt was awesome! Handsome and menacing, yet a sweet guy!

  • favorite characters

    1. Homo the Dog

    2. Gwynplaine

    best quote

    "Homo!"

  • I echo the others comments. Thanks for posting. I was so caught up in the movie that I forgot it was from the silent era.

  • *sigh* That was wonderful...The best silent-era film I have yet seen, thank you so much for posting.

lol Homo the dog PWNS stupid man! Yess!

  • Toda mi vida he adorado el cine mudo.

  • thank you for posting this -it is a beautiful film with the great Conrad Veidt- outstanding!

  • The film was nothing that I expected it to be, and I don't think I can do it justice by trying to describe how beautiful it is. Thank you so much for posting this film.

  • Loved it

    *__*

thank you so much for uploading this

  • Thankyou very much for posting this, I have been wanting to see this for years. Superb film, ahead of its time in a lot of ways. Thanks again! Oh, and I want to buy a german shepherd and call it Homo. That dog is made of awesome!

  • w-wow O____o

    THAT...was amazing!!!!

  • Just when I thought that no US film could equal the German Expressionist classics - you give us THIS! Whole lot of silent technique culminating here! Actors speed up & slow down time; build tensions to huge heights; the camera, costumes, crowd scenes, supporting actors - all in there full tilt delivering the emotional message - which resonate far beyond the rational minds immediate ability to decipher!

  • Paul Leni was a German Expressionist director, though :P... But yes, I agree, I'm a huge fan of G.Ex films, and this US film is a truly excellent film, absolutely wonderful in every aspect.

I feel so priviledged to have seen this film. I thoroughly enjoyed Mary Philbin and Conrad Veidt's performances in other films, and to see them together in a film directed by an excellent director... well, it's completely mind-blowing.

  • if they remade this chris walken would make a great gwynplaine

  • This movie is fantastic. Thank you sooooo much for posting it.

I lol'd though whenever they shouted "Homo". I just thought that was kind of funny.

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting these videos, I really appreciate it! <3 This film rocks!

  • I'd also like to thank you for posting this film here. My grandfather once told me about this story, when I was a kid, and I never thought about it again. I'm really glad for watching this.

  • This is my new favorite movie! No movie has EVER made me cry with happiness before.

  • I know same here, I watched this at school which was a bad idea I was crying the computer lab! Ha!

  • Yeah. This movie is incredible.

  • Thank you for putting this movie on youtube--I enjoyed it very much!

  • That was like the best happy ending ever. lol

  • Not one more joker comment please.

  • For the last time, they only used his appearence for the Joker, nothing else.

  • Yaay doggie! XD

I've loved this movie even before it was on DVD, and am so glad it is more widly available. If only more silemnts were saved and restored this way ^_^

  • Great movie and great actors!Amazing!

  • aw :) love the happy ending its a great movie, the actors were fantastic!!

  • This was a great movie, the first silent film I've watched all the way through... and now I want to read the book!

  • so hes the joker from batman

  • Gwynplaine inspired The Joker... but he isn't The Joker.

  • especially considering that Gwynplaine is "nice" Bob Kane, just took the "look" of Gwynplaine, like the lanky appearance, and the continuous grin. Then just decided to make him a paranoid schizophrenic.

  • SO beautiful! I'm glad they gave it a happy ending. Such a sad love story, the story in the book can almost be compared to Romeo and Juliette. And it's so sad how there is a stigma with Gwynplaine. It's just a big smile!

Thank you for uploading this! :D

  • Thank-you, I enjoyed this very much.

  • Really cool. This made my week.

  • Thank you very much for posting this!

  • It is uncommon to see silent motion pictures of this caliber at all, much less on YouTube. So many of them no longer exist, or exist only in partial or decayed form. How fortunate we are to be able to experience this out-and-out masterpiece of theatrical, poetic and cinematic expression. Incidentally, speaking of pieces, Baclanov was smokin hot in this picture.

  • Really THANKS FOR POSTING. I'm so happy to see this great film. I love the novel too; thanks the end is different! You?ve given me a beautiful day, THANK YOU AGAIN.

  • Oh, almost forget... THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS MOVIE!!!!! :D

  • who marked geekella as spam? she's right, this movie is awesome!

It is the first silent movie I've ever seen, and I loved it. Now I can't wait to read Victor Hugo's The man who laugh :), besides I MUST watch other silent films like nosferatu and dr caligari, etc/. :)

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you for uploading this unforgettable movie! I love Gwynplaine! :D

  • Really impressive...

And as far as I remember is even pretty faightful to the original Hugo's novel (well apart from the ending) !

    Thanx for posting!:)

  • What a great film! Thank you for posting.

  • Homo for Dog of the Millennium.

  • Wow. I got all teary eyed. The most captivating and creative film I have EVER seen..

    My favorite movie yet :]]

    5 stars on all.

  • Homo!!! Viva!

  • This is one of the most classic and deeply loving films that I have ever seen. The creativity is remarkable.

  • first silent movie that make me cry

    GOOB BOY HOMO xD

  • what a wonderful film!

  • why does that one guy keep covering his mouth (not Gwynplaine, but the guy with the hat) hes always covering his face for some reason...

  • One word. Amazing. First silent film that was actually intense and kept me thinking (:

  • Check out "The Crowd" and "Sunrise" - both timeless masterpieces.

  • I agree,Sunrise:A song of two humans is a wonderful film!As well as Broken Blossoms with Miss Lillian Gish.

  • yeahhh homo!!!

  • Aww... What a happy ending. Now THAT was a good family portrait at 9:24. Homo gets my vote as the best dog star ever!

  • the touching story of a man and his dog. go homo!!!

  • Hi, if you happen to live in or visit the UK next month: we're showing this movie in Newcastle, outdoor screening in Heaton Park, 27 August, with live piano accompaniment.

  • Holy shit. I was so glad when they pulled homo up. Incredible film, thanks for posting.

  • What a marvellous film. Thank you so much for posting.

  • That's the first silent movie that made my heart ache lol. I was fussing at it when Dea was led away from the door of the house of Lords. I was literally holding my breath-going "JUMP IN THE WATER,STUPID! AHH HE AIN'T GONNA MAKE IT." I mean i was actually yelling at Gwyplaine before I knew it. LOL. This is now my new favorite movie....And for the actors to perform the way they did using only expression.I bet if they were raised from the dead today and had to act again- they would be unbeatable.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! It was wonderful!

  • This is the first silent movie that I watched and I gotta say I love this movie. Thank you for the upload. After watching this I'm interested to see other silent movies that are great classics. Any suggestions?

  • Metropolis, Nosferatu, Sunrise, City Lights, Battleship Potemkin... plus The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which also stars Conrad Veidt...

And basically everything on silentfilmdemocracy's channel, there are a lot of great movies on there.

  • This was so worth watching. Thanks so much for posting. Truly awesome.

  • what a ending wow!!!!

  • Thank you for posting this video!

  • Thank you so much!

  • Thank you for uploading this film. I really enjoyed it. I don't think I've EVER seen this for sale on video/DVD in the UK for some strange reason!

  • Thank you for putting this up...I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • If Conrad Veidt was still alive and in his prime, he would be the perfect Joker for The Dark Knight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
