Hard to train? I'm 13 and I trained my Westie, my first dog, which I've had for 4 years, easily to sit, stay, come, lie down, dance, clap, jump 2'4, shake both paws, crawl, and bow. He is a very intelligent dog who caught on to tricks very easily. For example, he knew how to bow in just 5 minutes! I just suggest that if you have other small pets, such as cats, hamsters, or rabbits, I recommend another dog because our westie has a strong instinct to kill these animals. He's fine with other dogs.
my poor little westie is getting ready for surgery :( she has a severe womb infection :(
shes staying in the vet hospital at the moment and she is having surgery on monday :( i know she will only be gone for 2 days but i miss her sooooo much and i hope she is ok and not lonely without me :(
fingers crossed her surgery will be a success and she will be back chasing birds in my garden :)
Live up to 14 years? My West Highland is 16 years now. He was drived over by a car at a age of 6, he survived that, at an age of 14 he got balls cancer. He is now 16 years old, and he still runs! Lol.
My family is thinking about fostering a Westie, (we've never had a dog before, however I love all types of dogs and my moms friend happens to be familiar with a Westie rescue) If there are any comments/ tips or suggestions you could give me that would be great!
@Indamodd If you can provide a loving house and have a LOT of patience, then please do it. Westies are wonderful dogs, but bear in mind that unless its their idea, they won't do it. The one you see in the vid doing the obstacle course is the exception, most wouldn't do that ever. They need firm handling and lots of love, so praise them when they do well, but strong voice commands (not yelling) of NO when they do wrong. They love toys, very important to them. Also love looking out of windows!

Because I'm at school and family is gone during the day til 230, so are they trouble makers when it comes to leaving them alone in the house (did you use a cage?) thanks.
@Indamodd Most dogs don't do great alone all day, and Westies are no exception - yes, they are troublemakers and problem-solving smart. You should NEVER keep them in cages unless absolutely necessary, though - lots of toys, water & food, a VERY secure backyard (they dig!) and a dog flap should be OK, not destructive (they hate closed doors). They will make you feel VERY guilty when you come home (think of the silhouette in the window of Norman Bates' mother in Psycho). Leave radio or TV on too!

He also used to dig holes in my backyard but I've managed to train it out of him. Westies are very cute dogs! The only bad part about them I'd say is the grooming part, because if you don't wash and bathe them regularly they shed everywhere.
I jjust bought a 2 months puppy... whine and cries a bit but I guess its normal. He also has blood in his stool but the breeder gave me some pills to handle this as apparently, its normal when a puppy is in a new home.

If you have a submissive, type B personality then don't get a terrier. Westies that bite or behave poorly were raised incorrectly and needs proper training from trainers that truly understand the terrier personality.

today we saw one lost and looking scared, so me and my mum tried chasing it, my own dog simply ran along side it, so useless, but the westie would not give in, even though we were trying to help it. i grabbed its bum, and he nipped at me. finally the silly owners wandered back after realising his dog was missing. the dog was pretty smart and definitly tenacious.
and not cute at all. All these little bastards that I've met where crazy, pissy and aggresive. I worked as a mailman once and one of these little pricks prevented me from delivering the mail and damn near bit me twice in the ankle.

My mom's best friend has a Westie, and he's an incredibly laid back dog and loves sitting in my lap, and he lounges in the sun room for hours on end. Don't believe everything Animal Planet tells you.
My cousin has a black lab and he stayed over for a few nights at our house. One day my brother pulled and played with the dogs tail. when the "play session" was over, the black lab tried to hump my brother. All on tape. then my brother did another stupid thing and deleted it! Then i told him about this dog, and my brother said to my mom,

Westies are big dogs in little bodies. My boy Rocky loves to challenge bigger dogs but is very submissive with smaller dogs. He is great to roughhouse with. Very tough and hardy. But very sweet.

@crazy6omen If you want a lap dog, get the cocker. Generally, Westies don't do laps and need a lot of stimulation, so aren't happy being left alone for hours. Plus they are very stubborn and wilful. If you want some lap dog that slavishly loves you, get the cocker. If you want something that has a personality and whose love you have to earn, get the Westie.
We got our Westie in 2000 & even though she's gotten to be a right lump over the years, she still manages to jump on the sofa XD
She's gotten over her Napoleonic Complex of taking on big dogs, she's just a softie now...she also loves going under people's legs when they come to visit & we don't know why
But the best part is there's an area on her back that, if you rub it, she goes nuts & rolls over, wiggling on her back. She's gonna be 11 in November & it's still adorable seeing her do it <3
My dog Mocha is a Westie / Bichon Frise mix. She ADORES attention, and is fantastic with kids. And oh god, does she have personality. And P.S., she loves a warm lap more than anything.

@Blacker98 Terriers AREN'T a lap dog (except for Yorkies, maybe). They have unlimited energy. They won't be happy to be dressed in doggy clothes and sit in your lap.
I own one of these and I must say My dog is very lazy... It always sleeps! The only time when she is excited is when we wake up and go down and when she sees us she will be like a crazy dog same thing goes when we come back home... And my dog responds to the word (kai kai) which means go for a walk
They say westies have skin problems and it takes a lot of work to strip their coats but in general its kind of ridiculous. Its probably because of the stripping that their skin can flare up. We've always kept the outer layer of hair on our westie which keeps her dry in the rain and she's never had any skin problems.
Of course they are lap dogs ! My 2 Westies are lively and feisty at times but then for the most part they are big softies that love sitting on our laps.

Westies are big dogs in little bodies. My boy Rocky loves to challenge bigger dogs but is very submissive with smaller dogs. He is great to roughhouse with. Very tough and hardy. But very sweet.

my Westie may be a little Napoleon sometimes, but she is definitely a lap dog and not bad to train either.

@MsAshleydenise hi i know this comment was posted six months ago but i would like to ask for your opinion. I want a dog that is extremely loyal and affectionate to me and will follow me around whenever I'm at home but can handle some time with the rest of the family while I'm at college (i come back home everyday not like those kind of boarding schools, i live in europe lol) so i'd really like to have a lap dog like kind of breed. im interested in either a westie or an english cocker spaniel btw

@crazy6omen If you want a lap dog, get the cocker. Generally, Westies don't do laps and need a lot of stimulation, so aren't happy being left alone for hours. Plus they are very stubborn and wilful. If you want some lap dog that slavishly loves you, get the cocker. If you want something that has a personality and whose love you have to earn, get the Westie.

We got our Westie in 2000 & even though she's gotten to be a right lump over the years, she still manages to jump on the sofa XD
She's gotten over her Napoleonic Complex of taking on big dogs, she's just a softie now...she also loves going under people's legs when they come to visit & we don't know why
But the best part is there's an area on her back that, if you rub it, she goes nuts & rolls over, wiggling on her back. She's gonna be 11 in November & it's still adorable seeing her do it <3

My dog Mocha is a Westie / Bichon Frise mix. She ADORES attention, and is fantastic with kids. And oh god, does she have personality. And P.S., she loves a warm lap more than anything.

@Gaara45548 Well, it means that the Westie isn't the sort of dog that will just sit around in someone's lap. They're very energetic. My friend has two and they're both hyperactive!

I have a westie, and whenever I wash him, it starts to rain!!!!he is very smart, i love him,a really great choice!I trained him very very fast and it was really easy.

@Blacker98 Terriers AREN'T a lap dog (except for Yorkies, maybe). They have unlimited energy. They won't be happy to be dressed in doggy clothes and sit in your lap.

I own one of these and I must say My dog is very lazy... It always sleeps! The only time when she is excited is when we wake up and go down and when she sees us she will be like a crazy dog same thing goes when we come back home... And my dog responds to the word (kai kai) which means go for a walk

They say westies have skin problems and it takes a lot of work to strip their coats but in general its kind of ridiculous. Its probably because of the stripping that their skin can flare up. We've always kept the outer layer of hair on our westie which keeps her dry in the rain and she's never had any skin problems.

Of course they are lap dogs ! My 2 Westies are lively and feisty at times but then for the most part they are big softies that love sitting on our laps.
