I like this part of full metal jacket because even like Joker comments "that even though I'm in a world of shit I'm still alive and not afraid" is really brave. I think singing that song was making them think of happy times in their lives and especially because the Vietnam war was really bad.

To me this may be one of the best scenes in the movie....why??? Because more than any other Vietnam movie...this one scene captures a moment...where 18 year old kids were sent to another land to fight a war...and right here we are watching two things...they are forced to become "men" yet holding on to the wonderful memories and innocents of childhood...simply captivating

@JBeazer74 the other part is- these guys just killed a bunch of guys, but they've been wired and conditioned so deeply to sing mickey mouse after a battle. Their humanity is now completely gone. Anything they might have held onto at the start of the film is gone. Joker is no longer scared, he knows that he can kill and feel nothing, that's full circle for him
