The reason that place appears to be the way it is is because Mystery Spot is located on a slope and when you are there the horizon is not visible due to the many trees surrounding the location. Your inability to see the horizon disrupts your understanding of what is flat and what is sloped.

There is another place in South Dakota called Cosmos Mystery Spot. My opinion is, there is no mystery but optical illusion. Observe closely how the house and other structures are angled from the ground. Both houses from SD and CA are structured the same way. This angles creates the mind to think you are not standing straight. Observe and research more and anyone can create the same effect.

The guide kept telling us that we were lucky to go when it wasn't too busy, and that during the summer, when the groups are upwards of 30 per tour, "the effect" is lessened. So, plan your trip accordingly ;^)

We had a Mystery Spot here at a local amusement park, but it was called The Wacky Shack, I think. The whole place was torn down...they put up a store that sells nothing but levels and balls...(que ominous music or rimshot, I can't decide)

Been there a few times - it's genuinely interesting - many of the trees also only have foliage growing on one side and some are growing in a spiral. It's a cool place to visit for sure. I do think the hut at the top of the hill is an optical illusion though! ;-)

Some of it is just optical illusion, but there's also something odd going on. Possibly from a magnetic field coming from the minerals under the hill. It's nothing too alien or other-worldly, but it is a bit of fun. Thanks!
