this method isn't that effective any more, youtube displays thumbnails quite randomly from give or take 5% of the 1/4. 1/2 and 3/4 of the video, this means you have to make the image quite relevant and useful to your video, otherwise you have a random image on frreezeframe on the video;

The other thing you can do is put a tiny snipped of the thumbnail and keep reuploading the video over and over again in the hope that you strike lucky.

Looks like YouTube no longer uses the 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 marks to snag the thumbnails. It even appears to be randomized now, but I'll be researching this issue and posting results.

Try your previous trick now (i.e. May-2009) and you'll see it no longer works.

Check out my channel videoleadsonline and you'll see some sample video clips I used to test the thumbnail issue. I posted a video response with a thumbnail of "11.27" - 11 sec, 27 frames, the middle choice of a 36 sec video (not 1/2)

YouTube grabs screencaptures of your videos at the 1/4 mark, 1/2 mark and 3/4 mark. He's saying to get the best (most attractive) thumbnails to browsers to make sure your ideal image or portion of video appears in one of those spots. That's why he had the stop watch. Once you post videos you can choose from one of three thumbnails at the intervals I mentioned. Tags and timing of video releases are also great optimization strategies.
