I've got an idea. Why not teach people to punch with over accentuated punches so the opponent will see it coming a mile away!! Absolute rubbish from a vastly over rated and scrappy fighter.

@poundforpoundthebest Nichts falsch an einem Hook der funktioniert. Nur falsch wenn man den Style nicht erkennt und nicht trainiert. Vllt. funktioniert er ja auch für euch.
I'm not a Hater. I've met Don the Dragon and he is a nice guy. I don't expect him to be Bruce Lee. He's isn't Seven Segal. He Don 'the friggin' Dragon Wilson" and he rocks. UNLESS you've been in Martial Arts Movies, been around the world giving seminars, been in the ring fightin' unless you've done all that SHUT YUR FRIGGIN' PIE HOLES, HATERS!
Wilson was invited to fight in Bangkok after defeating two ex-stadium champions in Hong Kong. But he didn't expect he would be forced to lose some 8 pounds hours before to face a lightweight opponent. Yes, he was knocked down, but remember he was nothing like his usual self and his hands were so low and the footwork was almost non-existent. But he never did cowardly like turn the loss to as no-contest as Urquidez did. Besides, the ISKA was not founded yet in '83.
Guys lets not get into the who is better Godzilla or Superman kid discussions. Wallace, Smith, Wilson, Lewis were all and are still GREAT. THEY ARE THE PIONEERS OF THIS SPORT.
Wallace, along with Joe Lewis and Jeff Smith gave the birth to the sport. They were the pioneers. While Urquidez, Theriault, and Wilson further developed it. No comparison. But since Wilson was the top deciple of Wallace, if it weren't for Wallace, we wouldn't have known the Dragon today.
Disciple? He didnt train with him Wallace? and their styles of fighting are very different. Wallace was more interesting to watch and his movements were more fluid. Don't get me wrong, I've trained with both. The Dragons film career is his best trait.
Wilson trained under Wallace. Wallace taught Wilson his style of jabbing "superkicks." Wilson's right leg has been considered as the carbon copy of Wallace's left leg. Further, Wallace adviced Wilson to get coached by boxing trainers to get his punches better. Personally I feel Wilson was more fluid, but Wallace seemed to have more solid techniques. Well, this is just my opinion.
From the old Karate Illustrated magazine. I believe it was published in 1983, the one in which Wilson display the kung fu style punch with the yellow background. I also purchased some of his instructional DVDs, in which he clearly explains he learned his kicking style from Wallace.
Let's not forget that Dan was 1 of 2 people that beat Dennis Alexio, who I think is the best kickboxer of all time. Alexio went 70-2 in his carreer. Dan's a great fighter and a great mentor to learn from.
Don is GREAT champion & really nice guy. Strong technique especially Killer Side Kick! Most full contact fighters have weak straight kicks (side/back).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
world????? kickboxing champion?????,american full contact karate is more exact.stop using self proclaim shit in the 70s anymore.international rules, oriental rules.kyukushin copy others and call kick boxing in japan in the 60s, american did the same in 70s,no respect for the original, just .playing with words.you have the media but lied to the americans people and the world..
I don´t know what are You talking about. Don did fight arounf the world in many diferent styles of kickboxing and became on of the greatest world champs ever in kickboxing.
its hard to see traditional kung fu moves in a full contact fight but k fu gives a very good background for fighting.kung fu mixed with bjj is really hard to beat
I wouldn't say kung fu is worthless. As you said, it would give a good background for fighting. The best example is the former champion kickboxer Paul Vizzio, who is also a long time kung fu practitioner. As for Wilson, he is not a much of kung fu stylist as many people would like to believe. But we all agree he is one of the all-time great kickboxing champions in the history of the sport.
I wouldn't say I've watched all of his fights, but from what I have observed, he used very little kung fu for his fights. The only kung fu move I recognized is the tornado kick he executed every time the ring announcer called his name. His stylistic influence originally came from Bill Wallace, and late he modified it for the international rule (leg kick rule). Oh, I forgot to mention he had one of the best boxing skills in the history of the sport.
Actually he trained in kung fu for 2 years. But the only thing he got from that training is the tornado kick which he executed when his name was called before the fights began and for his movies. His kickboxing system is primarily based on the Bill Wallace with some of the Benny Urquidez thrown in.
Having trained with Bill Slayton (Ken Norton's boxing triner) Chuck Talehami (Vinnie Curto's trainer), Pat Gossen (Michael Nunn's trainer), Jimmy Williams (John Mugabi's trainer)etc. amd after sparring and training with many boxing contenders and champions since 1978, I feel qualified to demonstrate "One" of the various different "hooks" which have enabled me to KO 48 professional kickboxers. One of my wins was over James Waring the IBF Cruiserweight World Boxing Champion. your friend, Don
I think thats the reason why kickboxers don't put he blocks, because the kicks are the prime defense. In this case your best defense is your offense, and you can strike with it.
I'm sure Don Wilson is a very nice man and all but his hook is pure garbage. He isn't really rooted to the ground because his knees aren't bent as they should be. When he throws the hook he drops his hand making himself open for a straight right.
I got nothing against kickboxers per se but most of them can only fall back on their kicks. Their punching style and defenses would be picked apart by a seasoned boxer. I used to box in the amateurs and have fought greats such as Ed "pee-wee" Hobson from the states and Anabel Acevedo Santiago from Peurto Rico and those guys would eat up Wilson in the early rounds of boxing match.
Many people believed who could knockout Don Wilson easily. Like many people believed who could knock out Muhamed Ali easy. That what makes fighters like theses high class, they make You believe its easy and than You find Youself knockedout, hehe.
I'm only commenting on what I see of Don's technique and his left hook looks tired and sloopy. I've seen his fights and he definitely has heart but his left hook technique, for me at least, leaves alot to be desired.
dude you are trying to say that kick boxers have got rubish deffence you are wrong and as for boxing all it is using your hands and moving about the ring to avoid oncoming attacks in martial arts we train to use all of our tools not just our hand and as for some one picking apart there deffence i dont think so in an equal fight between a seasoned boxer and a seasoned kick boxer the kick boxer wins hand down its been done many time before and the boxers rarely win.
I'm saying that a if a kickboxer was in a strict boxing match against another boxer he would find the going very tough. Kickboxers used to come to our gym to learn how to box properly and they would spar with the fighters. I'm guessing that 70% of the strikes in kickboxing are done with kicks and 30% are done with punches. Naturally a kickboxer's talent and skill is going to be in their kicks.
A friend of mine who saw both Wilson and Maurice Smith in person. According to him, Wilson is more of 6', while Smith, though being listed as 6'2, is actually closer to 6'1.
What a great video. If I remember correctly, Wilson credits the development of solid power in his punches and kicks to his goju-ryu instructor, Chuck Merriman. Though the total time he spent with Merriman was brief. The Dutch legend Rob Kaman gave full marks for Wilson's punching prowess.

He was knocked down a couple of times and the ref stopped it? Ayone know?
