It was so much fun watching the cadets (most of whom never experienced Irish music, let alone the force that is the Cheiftains) transfixed by what they were watching. Heck, none of them were even Irish. They had a ball ,and were taken away from the hell they must have been going through, if only for a few hours. Before the show, I got backstage. Met Sean, Paddy, Kevin, Cara Butler and Danny Golden. What a night!
First time I saw them was in 1981 in Rockland County, New York. I was ten. Second time was in the early nineties at The U.S. Military Academy, the famous West Point. I was second row and a group of exhausted and weary cadet/soldiers were in the front row. Many were fast asleep in their seats before the show started (poor kids). But when that show started, those kids didn't know what hit them! (cont'd)
Beautiful! Hello from the highlands of the State of North Carolina, United States. Please see "Walter Birdwell's Channel" to see our continuation of traditional music.
Wonderful music by some of the most intelligent and creative musicians out there. That is quite a flock of musicians to fit in that tiny back room at Malloys though!. Cant wait to get back this May.
@pnw1995 "Water from the Well" is a great album. This video was from documentary of the same name that contains the music from the album played on location in different scenes across Ireland.
I love the Chiefains! I've got tickets for this current tour and looking forward to seeing them again. Since Paddy Maloney is getting up in the years, I'm not sure how much longer they'll be touring.
When I arrived first place I went was Matt Molloy's Pub...sat in the cornwer this video was recorded and drank a pint at the end of the bar as well...will be going back ASAP. Have been a Chieftains fan for years!
What have you started!!?? Now we have the Bluegrassers asking for your tunes when we play on the Square in Bentonville, Arkansas!!
Way cool! I even bought a Bodrhan and a panny whistle to learn the Irish tunes you play. I hope you will visit Mountain View, AR! The Ozark Music Center is there.
Those persons that say Chieftains are just bad pub music, are ignorants I'M FROM ARGENTINA I'D PREFER THE CHIEFTAINS BECAUSE I'TS THE BEST IRISH FOLK GROUP IN HISTORY OF MUSIC,GO CHIEFTAINS,DOWN WITH LIRYC FOLK MUSIC,FUSIONS ARE A FAKE,THIS IS SPIRITUAL MUSIC!!!
the tune with the banjo is called "Within a Mile of Dublin/The Old Blackthorn" featuring Barney McKenna of the Dubliners. It's on the Chieftain's CD Water from the Well.
Brilliant!!

The Chieftains are just sublime, the music flows from them. I know this is a little....cheeky.. but at 2.57 it looks like he's got red shrek ears....

This may be too difficult to answer here...I'm fairly new to the Chieftains. Any recommendations on their recordings? Love this music!!

start at the beginning and work your way foreward. It's all good, there's no mistake to make. :)

I'd recommend "Water from the Well".

Try to listen to their older recordings, to enjoy the awesomeness of two former members, Sean Potts on whistle and Michael Tubridy on flute.
Their compilation album, The Best of the Chieftains, is good.

The Chieftains: Wide World Over.
It's a best of album of some of their pairings with musicians across the world.

Great tune from a great band. I had a pint in this pub, owned by Matt Molloy, when in Westport a few years back.
