Literally can't get enough of this guy's playing!!! Been a fan for a while and… YES he does sound like Eric (he even make a point to state that in some of his videos)… but you cannot deny that he is one talented Moe-Foe!!!
This is great, should be called "Joe Bonamassa plays almost exactly like Eric Johnson", though. It is freaking awesome, but give EJ some credit here bros
@naxi55500555 So we'll never get to hear these "true masters" as they will be hiding in their bedrooms or playing such easy stuff they will be indistinguishable from mediocrity. So we'll just have to make do with the john mclaughlins, paco de lucias, robben fords, van halens, al di miolas, stefano barones (in no particular order and admitting too many greats to mention) of this world. eh?
@guitarmann "here's someone who just practiced a lot. That is not being an artist." .........are you daft? So I guess everyone besides so SRV is a ripoff of Hendrix then by your reasoning. Influences come from everywhere, just because someone has similarities and techniques they use, doesn't mean they are "copying" someone else. It's physically impossible to not sound similar to someone out there dumbass. Show is your skill, put up a vid of your amazing unadulterated uninfluenced perfection do
As much as I love JB to death, anything dubbed as a "lesson" by him are anything but. They always consist of him starting with something like "yeah, and just do somethin' like this," ... and he proceeds to melt your face for the next 2 minutes with stuff you can only dream of playing.
He doesn't sound as good as any of them you mean. Joe plays a pastiche of other peoples styles. It's like he's a blues rock tribute band, not an artist really in my view. He copies Eric Johnsons mode patterns parrot fashion which is just totally pointless. This move to copying Eric just confirms for me that he has nothing at all to say. The only thing Joe communicates, with his music is that here's someone who's practised the guitar a lot. That is not being an artist.
Is Joe a distinctive player? When you strip out Eric Johnson, Paul Kossoff et al what is actually left that defines him as a player. Inspirational musicians bring a new voice to the table alongside their influences. Joe forgot the maxim "it's not what you steal it's how you steal it" and just stole directly from his influences and repeated the licks parrot fashion. Wayne Krantz is an example of distinctive player with a voice of his own. Joe is technically very good but unoriginal.
@RedCapSly i completely disagree. i hear the eric johnson, the clapton, the kossoff, but he really doesnt sound like any of them. i can tell its him all the time. he does have a certain voice of his own. there is a lot of clapton though for sure. the only thing he really does of johnson his he got scale sequence patterns from him. but his style is really nothing like his (im a huge eric johnson fan) and he doesnt even play those the same way eric does. his tone isnt like his either.
What's with this trying to sound like Eric Johnson, for fucks sake get your own style! Eric Johnsons trademark is using those horrible major tonality modes within a blues context, which always sounds SHIT! But at least Eric invented that sound, this is just pathetic.
Don't you have to memorize the E pentatonic blues scale up & down the neck first, while building up your speed? Sounds like a lotta study & work. I can't even bring myself to do my homework or study for a test so I can get a decent paying job....Guess I'll stick to rhythm (had to break out the dictionary) guitar.
This guy is so definitely NOT overrated. Sure he has some Eric Johnson-y tones, but who cares. It's not like he's saying, "here's a guitar tone I created.. ". Joe is the real deal, and a breath of fresh air. Thanks so much mr. B.
HE LOOKS LIKE UDGE OR WHATEVER HIS NAME IS FROM THE GOONIES IN THIS.THEY SHOULD GET HIM TO DO THAT CHARACTER IF THEY DO A REMAKE . THEY WOULDNT NEED ANY MAKE UP
You can't explain how to feel music, you have to just keep practicing. There seems to be many guitar players around now-a-days but not many musicians. Joe Bonamassa is a musician, give him any instrument and some practice time and he will come up with something Awesome. Don't think "im a guitar player", think "im a musician", put the tabs away and start listening, you will find your voice.
@sleevedagger what are you talking about? he stole 1/2 those licks from Eric Johnson. granted his chops are great, and he's a great player, he's not an inspired musician.
@johnsone7777 Bullshit, Its a fact that all musicians past and present learn and copy from other musicians, and over time that creates a hybrid style that's all their own. He's been praised by musicians like BB King and Eric Clapton, but I guess you no more about music right?. He is a great musician that's why he has sold over 7 million albums and counting world wide, how many you sold?
@sleevedagger finally someone gets it! i know alot of my friends look up tabs on metal because it sounds cool. and i went with the play scales and throw in my own stuff and now i play blues and jazzy type stuff and even eric johnson. and they have no idea how to play that besides the stuff they looked up!
He's got a killer tone, and a great musical mind, but he's just not a good teacher. That line about using different modes, wow just a nugget of inspired brilliance!
Joe, I love your work, but if you're going to explain how you do something, explain it, don't just shred and expect us to understand.
You can tell that Joe had a lot of influences and he found a way to make it his own. I love the Celtic type phrase at 0:53 and the Eric Johnson stuff he fused with the standard blues stuff. He even used some modal ideas as well. Very cool
