OK, well Rebeca wasn't a person but a group of protesters who called themselves 'Merched Beca' (Beca's Daughters) - led by a man named Twm Carnabwth. The Rebeca Riots took place between 1839 and 1843 and were undertaken by local welsh farmers. The Welsh – rural and very poor were unhappy. Harsh and oppressive landlords ruled the land. Taxes were very high and unfair – including high toll charges by the Turnpike Trusts. (local companies that were set up to maintain roads.
1.@DistantDreamer93 Thank you very much. It impresses me how from the beginning of the XV. century, Welsh people could unite and take organized and very good planned actions f or its freedom. It is too bad that you couldnt do this from the beginning of the Anglo-Saxon invasion . Because the lack of unity of Welsh, they conquered the island :(.
2. @DistantDreamer93 But after that they understood how important is the unity and the keeping their own language and culture and this is the reason that you wrote incredible pages in the book of history with the revolt of Owain Glyndwr, or against all English policy of assimilation that lasted centuries, you keeped your own language and culture. This is amazing.
3. @DistantDreamer93 As for us, Hungarians, this unity and solidarity doesnt exist. Unfortunately this is the reason that our country was occupied by Turcs in 1526, than by Austrians in 1683, than it was broken into pieces and given to 4 countries in 1920, and only a little part remained free, in the other parts the oppression begun and lasts until today. But this catastrophes didnt made Hungarians fight for their own causes together.
4. @DistantDreamer93 Today too the countries in wich Hungarians live influence Hungarians to fight each other instead of fighting together for their own rights. With this ancient policy of "divide et impera" (make your enemies to fight each other and thanks to this rule rule them) they manage to make Hungarians slowly disappear and be assimilate.
@DistantDreamer93 Today night a boy and his girlfriend from the Hungarian nationality were beaten by police because they asked their names, they didnt had identity card so they had to say their names in order to be written down by the police. The romanian policemen couldnt write their names because in a town of 50 % Hungarians they dont know how to write down Hungarian names. So the guy made a joke about this and they beated him and his girlfriend very cruelly. This is EU, democracy and stuff...
@szalard Toll roads - where the user had to pay a fee (a toll) to make use of the road. These trusts were needed because the government did not finance things such as roads at the time.)
This was a genuine burden in already difficult times to the rural tenant farmers and farm workers of South Wales.
@szalard For example – a place called Rhayader had six toll gates on the roads into town therefore any journey made from crossing from one field to another or especially bringing animals into or from market would be incredibly expensive. Terribly unfair taxation. And this is what sparked the protests.
The rioters were men – farmers, dressed in women’s clothing and who called themselves ‘Merched Beca’ or ‘Terfysgoedd Beca’ who would take action against the toll-gates – symbols of high taxes, tolls and tyranny by smashing them down and terrorising the gatekeepers. The riots stopped in 1844 for many reasons and in that same year a Parliamentary act to consolidate and amend the laws relating to turnpike trusts in Wales was passed.
You can debate on why the called themselves 'Merched Beca' - it was either a biblical reference to Genesis XXIV, 60 - "And they blessed rebecca, and said unto her, Thou art our sister. Be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gates of those that hate them." (Carnabwth was a religious man) or other stories say that it was a woman called Rebeca who lent them the women clothing. More info can be found on the internet –I’ve only given a brief explanation!
@DistantDreamer93 the sad thing, the english medium classes in Wales especially the east are not taught any of this welsh history. Are we surprised that they dont a generally more positive outlook on Wales, learn welsh or indeed want more rights for the welsh culture
i am not however naive to the fact that the welsh chruch repressed welsh folk music

It's a little sad to see this begin to drift into them and us because those who know Pembrokeshire will know how well we all get along.
