People have to understand this documentary was biased; showing the worst of the worst, and these disgusting people who are a poor excuse for 'breeders' are the people that should be scorned, not every single purebred breeder that exists. My dog is a rescue mutt, & I love her. I'll always advocate looking in shelters before buying (I volunteer myself). I also advocate people buying from GOOD breeders, the ones that health test, don't inbreed, breed for health quality over useless conformation, etc
@Wizbash Also, breeders who actually care about their dogs will take back any dog if an owner can no longer care for it, ensuring none of their dogs end up in shelters. The dogs that do sadly end up in shelters are a result of money-hungry breeders, backyard breeders, puppy mills, pet shops, abusive owners, etc. I liked this documentary for getting the word out about the cruel breeders,I hate that many people who watched it now believe everyone who breeds purebreds is a monster.
@Wizbash So the "worst of the worst" includes the Chairman of the UK's Kennel Club, who saw no problem "line breeding" father to daughter, or father to grand-daughter etc. Have a look at my site (which unfortunately I have still to finish), which provides a list of diseases and ailments pedigree dogs are predisposed to. Some of them are in a pitiful state. Breeders and breed standards have a lot to answer for.
@DerPfaffe Yes, it does. I am well aware of the many ailments that plague purebreds (I deal with them consistantly at work/college), what annoys me is that good breeders are working to eliminate these diseases, and they are being grouped with cruel, idiotic breeders by people who don't know better. Some people are watching this and assuming mutts are magically healthy, which is untrue - a sick dog bred to a sick dog will result in sick puppies, regardless of breed (or lack thereof)
my doghad syringomyeliabut we got Medecin from the vet so itching decreased, but in the end we must let him slepp forever because he was back disease and murmurs of the heart :'( i miss him soooooooooo much!!
I'm afraid that even the best breeders sometimes go in for inbreeding to bring the breed closer to perfection - while it actually might be the breed's downfall, ironically. That's why adopting animals from shelters is the best thing to do. Most people don't realise it, but there are many wonderful animals in shelters and they really deserve a warm home. I don't understand why people encourage the birth of new animals by going to breeders, when there are already so many homeless animals...
@Kzinix They are not trying to perfect the breed. What they are trying to do is conform to the stupid breed standards in an exaggerated manner so that they can win Dog Shows... Breeding from so-called "Champions" is where the money is.....
Over 1/4 of dogs in shelters are pure bred, NEVER buy from a breeder. Spay and neuter legislation is very needed, here in California we tried but the breeders defeated it with lies.
True breeders work for the preservation of a subspecies (aka breed) , its special characteristics, and gene pool. Shows provide an expert opinion on how well they are doing. Breeders are basically match-makers. Breeders cannot create even ONE gene. Monsanto, however, has forced foreign genes into numerous crops including food crops, from other species that could not occur through natural breeding. You, and your animals, are eating these unnatural life-forms every day. Check it out yourself.
@vlvl21 It said later in the show that they did actaully put her down after doing all they could. Very sad but they didn't want to put her down without trying to save her.
I, for one, love my gorgeous, crazy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She's the greatest animal companion I've ever had. Maybe I got lucky here in Texas, but I could never own another breed now.
I've got a Cavalier and luckily the vet says she's in a very good health condition. I take her for a check once a month just to be sure she's ok. I hate to see these things happening. :(
But it happens cause of the bloody gold digging pet shops and breeders.
True breeders will have all the papers and health check certificates before even considering litter and selling. :)
if your going to buy a dog from pedigree breeders do your research, some breeders breed for money and power but many breed for the love of the breed. Intense inbreeding is one for the biggest problems in breeding - read the dogs genetic papers . it's easy the see if the same names are come up again and again, when this happens the dog loses vigour. ask questions about the father and mother. Don't a buy a dog if you haven't research the breeder!
Come on people. I have two Cavalier's and neither one of them have these diseases. I know someone who has 5 of them, someone who has 1 and another family who has 2..again none of them have problems. If these people would look for decent breeders, there wouldn't be a problem.
@tmarkspn1 If there was more regulation on the breeding industry then this wouldn't happen in the first place. Don't blame the people who own the dogs when the breeders need to be regulated, and possibly banned from breeding.
@onecrazylemming Look, I researched my breeder before I bought my dog. I got references upon references..is it that hard to do the same?! No I don't think so. Im not saying that there shouldn't be some sort of regulations put in place..I agree with that 100% but would it be so hard to take a little initiative and do some research?! No i don't think so
Regardless of the love the owners must feel for this dog, surely they should think about the welfare of her- what quality of life does she really have if the disorder is as bad as is thought? I don't think i could live with it. Poor girl.
Sheer tragedy; whatever happened to EMPATHY? some people simply don't give a damn about the anguish and pain that animals have to endure! One can only hope that Karma will greet such selfish breeders!
The problem is the hunger for prestige. It's not just the dogs that go on show - their owners go on show too. They want the adulation, the ribbons, etc. This is why they hate this documentary so much - it has severely damaged their cherished reputation with the public.
@tmarkspn1 - If you don't have any idea what you're talking about - don't say anything!!! Try doing a little research - better yet - VISIT a puppy mill and see the TRUTH! I am a dog groomer and one of my customer has a sweet little Cavalier named Molly - that suffers with seizures and will eventually die - DUE TO BREED GREED! They weren't educated before their purchase, but they sure are now. Thank God she has loving parents to take care of her and can afford the care she needs.

This reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode where this guy asks a genie to turn him the leader of a country.
The genie turned him into Adolph Hitler at the time when the allied armies were coming to get him in the bunker.
Surely getting a docile and sweet dog was not worth this.
