  • Brought back memories of empty stock transfers Golders Green to Acton works in the 50's

  • i wonder if anyone got on accidently and was like oy stop i want to get off

  • @SpartanStig117 our tickets were very carefully checked when we boarded the train!

  • 10.000 Clicks!

  • Awesome video!

    * * * * *

  • I remember these so well....High Barnet was our local tube station...it's funny how old design and materials seem so much more HUMAN than modern transport (including buses) which seem harsh, sterile and presumably contain loads of surveillance...how times have changed...I must get down to Isle of Wight....

  • Do you know if there are any of these 1930s stock left serviceable that get used on heritage outings or any use at all?

    Thanks

  • @omnicity43 well there is the heritage train but whether it is in a serviceable condition is a different matter.

If you can visit the open day near to Acton Town stn this weekend (12/13 March 2011) you may even see it as a static exhibit.

  • @omnicity43 silly me, I should also have told you about the Isle of Wight, which uses a small fleet of them.

  • Well, they certainly had character - modern trains look pretty sterile in comparison.

  • I remember something special that is not shown here, only black appearing windows give a hint on it: a divided looking area near the single doors... (I don't know how to explain)

Another point: I remember a Bakerloo line map which terminats at Watford Junction.

  • Sorry, I am not sure about the windows, but yes, for many years Bakerloo Line trains went to Watford Junction, sharing the service with LNWR / LMSR / BR trains from Euston and Broad Street.

The joint service started in 1917 and ended something like 1985, although in later years the Bakerloo service was best described as 'minimal'.

The health and safety people do not like tube and mainline sized trains sharing the same tracks and nowadays would prohibit any new examples of this,

  • @dontrequest In normal service the 1938 stock had a 'guard's area' ate the leading end of the last car. It was divided off from the rest of the car by a steel bar across the gangway. The guard had the use of the tip-up seats on either side should they wish to sit down between stations.

  • This is excellent!

  • @lukespencer91

    Thanks!

  • 0:01

  • This unit is excellent, remember travelling on it in 2004 on the uxbridge line centenary special, coming back from amersham to harrow-on-the-hill, we were definitely over 50mph!

  • @bronzeonion I used to go to school on these... alas trains on the Northern Line seem to travel more slowly nowadays.

What I'd like to see is an Isle of Wight unit return to London and operate on the section of the Euston - Watford line which is also used by Bakerloo Line trains at the same time as this 4 car unit is also running in the Bakerloo 'north of Queens Park'. It would be great having two 1938 stock trains meeting en route - - cameras at the ready :-))!

    Simon

  • @citytransportinfo Id love to see the northern line go over 25mph in tunnels too, I often forget about the northern completely (because its so slow) when im out in London seeing various railtours and freight! for example: Waterloo - Euston. We get the Bakerloo to oxford circus, then the victoria line! Now I try to remember the northern line is there lol. That would be bloody excellent, running 38ts on the queens park - watford but the chances are very thin lol

  • you have got to be kidding me i could bang my head on the top cause im tall and that train is soo small

  • Where are these heritage tours advertised? I would love to go on one but have not seen any advertised anywhere!

  • @Markjuk I think on the London Transport Museum website, although I got to hear about it on the LondonsTransport yahoo group.

    Simon

  • @Markjuk

its on the LT Museum website - next event will be 12th September 2010.

    Simon

  • @citytransportinfo - Thanks unfortunately I cannot make the tour this weekend. The option that runs at 8.50am on sunday looks the best one as this goes right across London to Shoreditch rather than the later ones that only run to Watford. Do the tours that go to Charing X also include a run down the "over run" tunnels that go to Aldwych? Also how do trains reverse at Charing X do they carry on into the over run tunnel (into a crossover point) or reverse at the platform?

  • @Markjuk I wont be travellling on the 1938 train either, as its a tad expensive for me, being unemployed.

Not that it matters, as apparently both trains have failed their maintenance checks so neither will be running.... ah well what a shame!

    Simon

  • Amazing - the same noisy ride with today's carriages. Little to no improvement in 72 years! Could even be said these older carriages had more style!

  • I agree, these older trains had more style.

Nowadays there may be more electronic high tech wizardry (which adds to the heat in the tunnels) but the trains follow a style which is best described as 'bland'.

    Simon

  • @citytransportinfo love the green paint and wooden interior

new train interiors look alight but too plain, they aren't as interesting as 1938 stock interior

  • @citytransportinfo you spelt ealing wrong in the description simon sorry just pointing out a spelling mistake im not being a pest.

  • @tomandjerryissick thanks but are you sure?

Seriously though, yes, I did, but have now corrected it! 'Easling' is no more!

    Thank you, much appreciated

  • OMFG HOW'D YOU GET IN THE CAB!! xD

  • @wowfever

    I walked!

seriously... this was a special event, and a special train, plus all passengers had bought a special ticket from the London Transport Museum to travel on the train, and the railway staff allowed passengers in the cab, for a short while.

I actually had longer than is normally allowed, but only because there were only a few of us and everyone else who wanted to go into the cab had already done so.

    Simon

  • @citytransportinfo Oh right.. You bought special tickets XD

Awesome, im going to thje London Transport Musem soon (:

  • 1863 for London. Great Video.5* for content.

  • Fascinating Video! 5 Stars!

Greetings from "across The Pond" - Boston, Massachusetts USA. THE Home of America's Oldest Subway (1898)!

  • The 1938 tube stock was a design classic, art deco at its finest hour, little touches like the shoval type lampshades, and the draught screens in the saloon area's, maple slat flooring, the iconic feathered grill vent above the front cab , and its oddities make this in my opinion the best ever designed tube stock unit to come out of metro & cammell, second being the 1956/59/62 tube stock's

  • at 05.49 listen to the MG's sing, and this is what a tube train SHOULD look & sound like, and has PROPER driving controls!!!!!!!!,

  • Nice to see this old stockagain. I used to use these to go to work from High Barnet to Tottenham Court Road everyday. Many times I seemed tobe in 10306 which had round windows and artdeco style, I suppose no one thought to save that Driving car? That would have added to this set. Nice footage 5* Do you know what was its fate?

  • Sadly 10306 was scrapped in 1980 while the origional 11012 (the car with that number in the preserved train is really 11178) was written off in 1983.

This type of train was involved in the Moorgate disaster in 1975 which is still the worst train crash on the Underground, that train was formed from the front 11175, 012263, 10175, 11115, 012167, 10115.

  • That is a shame, another thoughtless rush to the scrapman! It should have been in the L.T museum. Cant believe no one tried to save 10306.

  • @FonteDeiMarmi

indeed it is a shame - I travelled in 10306 several times and because of the extra visibility it was a unique experience

  • Thats pretty good. The situation with the doors might get annoying. I know they have those trains in the Isless of White. Was the ride bumpyer than other trains?

  • wow, it makes me think that is what people were riding right before the bliz occured.

  • and during the blitz!

  • I remember these as a child, just about on their way out. Love the interior

  • Wow-great vid-I have never seen a train change lines in my life-I am 13!!!

Great Vid-must be bad to see it all through a screen and not your own eyes!!!

  • Probably the best video on youtube of this lovely train Simon. Well done and thanks for posting it on here.

  • Thanks - its just a shame that my camera only does 8 bit mono sound. Its a camera with video, rather than a proper camcorder.

But I've just started a new job (after many months of unemployment) and maybe next year I'll get myself a proper camcorder. I am looking at something with an eyepiece, so that even in bright sunshine it is possible to see what is being filmed. As far as I know only Panasonic include this feature.

    Simon

  • The only drawback with an eyepiece camera is you tend to miss out on watching all the action with your own eyes and only ever see it through a screen

  • I know - but its how I did things for many years - and with a monochrome eyepiece display!

  • Fantastic, How did you hear about this run and was it easy to get tickets ?

  • I heard about this through a yahoo group grapevine. Tickets were easy to buy from the LT Museum's website and as everything was done at the last minute they were collected from a nominated station.

    Simon

  • Was this a special run?

  • 'Sort of'

The train was returning back 'home' and it was decided to carry fare-paying passengers who had pre-booked their tickets.

    Simon

  • But at the end I added still images from other times when I've both been on this heritage train and when the 1938 stock was in regular public service.

It was a job to fit everything in within the 10 minute limit, which explains why the still images were somewhat rushed.

If you / ayone else watching this video wishes, it is possible to pause the video during playback.
