  • quite simply the best drummer on the planet

  • 2:45 is soooo fucking dirty....

  • Gavin actually cuts out some of the outer strands on his snare wires which helps him achieve that really full bodied sound with the wires engaged.

  • I like 7/8 .

  • How he holds his sticks so close to the butt and still maintains that level of control will always baffle me

  • If you're a drum expert you might be able to argue that he isn't the very best on the planet, but I think even then you'd be hard pressed to find someone that's actually BETTER than this man here. There's no one else I'd rather listen to drum. WOW as always.

  • he's really fucking good but what he plays is not beautiful !

  • @ominomonimo first part of your statement I agree, second part I don't agree

  • A must-listen piece, for every drummer and a really cool song for any musician.

  • what headphones are those?

  • Amazing! He just plays so friggin' clean, all of the accents and dynamics are spot on.

  • this should be on the news

  • damn soo groovy....!

  • he keeps it up in the air so well in congruence with the sax...so amazing

  • Sweet jesus!

  • Does a playalong-version exist of this song?

  • @DonQuerres that I don't know. I need to buy the Rhythmic Horizons dvd and see any commentary Gavin has on the music to answer that question.

  • @TheDrummer4Life I Remember that on 1 of his snares he cut off a few rows of the chain (or whatever you call it) from the snare, that and he has the best mics ever.

  • @DonQuerres im pretty sure there it on the dvd...i have it but dont quote me on it

  • How the hell does he get that snare sound?! I have like the same snare drum, same heads and everything, and I can't get it to sound that controlled without having a Moongel on it.

  • @jacoe99 im guessing from the sound of it that he tunes it kinda tight

  • @jacoe99 he also cuts down the number of actual snare wires on the drum. i think he about halves it, so there are 10 instead of 20.

  • @RackAttacks makes sense, sounds like its almost halfway between snare off and on!

  • @RackAttacks I know he does, but how does that affect the overall sound?

  • @jacoe99 it's basically an attempt to limit snare buzz. fewer snares = less buzz. look up the "Broken opportunity" video with Bob Gatzen. He does a really good job of explaining it. in fact, after watching the video I tried it myself and got awesome results!

  • @jacoe99 Try using an o-ring.

  • @jacoe99 He also uses big, heavy sticks. Vic Firth rock model I believe.

  • @jacoe99 i'd say that the snare is probably mixed and EQ'd / compressed for the intents and purposes of the instructional DVD... still, incredible sound regardless!

    Gavin Harrison is BOSS

  • @jacoe99 he has remO's or evan e-rings on his snare

  • @jacoe99 Obviously, in studio sounds are always modificated/compressed.

  • From listening I'm 99% sure he compresses the hell out of his drumkit. I'm sure the tuning helps, but that's just mixing.

  • @jacoe99 Remember, this is from a DVD. So it's been post processed and EQd and panned etc etc etc, all things that are not going to sound that perfect "live"

  • @jacoe99 Also, his sound technicians are like demigods of their own right. They make his kit sound like a whole new animal.

  • @jacoe99 Finely tuned ears my friend :)

  • @jacoe99 also he has compressed these drums in the studio digitally

  • @jacoe99 He does use a couple of thin rings that fit really close to the sides

  • Comment removed

  • @jacoe99 He picks up the snare drum but also up and decorates it with EQ, filters, compressor.

Without the mics they would sound probably is not as good;)

sorry my english is not so good !

  • @Sonor1996 You are absolutely right, I was about to write the same :)

  • @jacoe99 try different tunings. remember too that the sound is engineered since this is a studio uptake. but to get a tighter sound, try a different batter head maybe. remo CS is good. moongel kills what body the snare has so skip it. or at least cut it into a smaller piece and place it strategically. also, evans has a head, dont remember the name, with a thin muffling round the periphery of the snare, and airholes. should make it drier

  • @jacoe99 askgavinharrison DO.T com

  • @jacoe99 I recall somewhere he said he uses like 3 dampening rings on his snare.

  • @jacoe99 he has cut te snare wires...he uses only 8 wires instead of 16...

  • @jacoe99 Well, I'm hearing that he tunes it to about a medium tight tuning on the batter head, with a really tight resonant head. I'm also hearing that he keeps his snares pretty tight. As far as the controlled sound goes, it's most likely a EQ things. They add a lot of bottom into his snare mix so that he can get a lot of body when playing live (or at least that's what it sounds like to me). I imagine that along with that they do something to help with the overtones.

  • @jacoe99 He cuts the snare strands down to 8 strands. I guess that is a big factor.

  • @jacoe99 Editing dude.

  • @DropkickTheDinosaur the technical term is "drumgasm"

  • Yeah he keeps it closed by using a hihat clutch...

  • That snare and ride and hi hats and everything are just perfect! Damn

  • what a great feeling....It´s awesome......BRAVO!!!!!

  • the best drummer ever

  • Hate jazz, but love Harrison's superb drumming.

  • Eargasm.

  • now THIS is how you play the drums!

  • hi gavin, god here, can you give me some drum lessons?

  • Gavin is more than just a drummer. Everything that he does is an example of musical genius. This stuff is much deeper than just playing. It flows smoother than cream soda. It's ridiculous. He's taking drumming to a whole new, unexplored territory. Fantastic.

  • Music drumming at it's finest.

  • Gavin I <3 you ! and that doesn't make me gay ! XD

  • @ClosingTheCircle It does...

  • On which album can I find this song?

  • @ismaelnobour Dear ismaelnobour,

you can find this song on:

    1) Gavin Harrison DVD: rhytmic horizzonts

    2) Dario Zeno CD: L'inconscienza di Zeno (ed. terre sommerse)

  • Gavin himself has said this and he can't be any more correct. The man is a genious.

imagination and creativity > Technique and rudiments

While they are still both important subjects, a drummer is nothing without flavor

  • everytime god damn adore this mans feel

  • @miniatureface actually he is using a Cobra Clutch .Watch Closer I don't see his drop clutch used in this video

  • I have this dvd and it is just awesome!!!! i also got the rhythmic illusion dvd and both have helped me to improve my playing... This guy is one of my best inffluences until now!

  • how does he keep his hi hat so tight while using that double bass drum? damn!

  • he has a drop clutch

  • yea but i feel that with a drop clutch it would still be pretty loose, but here it sounds pretty tightly closed. like at 2:20, it sounds too tight for it to be just a drop clutch. idk you're probably right but it just seems odd to me

  • It's a Tama cobra Clutch

  • it's not that tight, actually. you can see how effortlessly he hits it, yet it moves a lot

  • @TheDrummer4Life yeah but thats becore its gavin harrison, he can do that on your pedal, too.

  • @drumsetdemon he wrote on his website he uses a DW clutch now. back then might have been different.

  • @drumsetdemon he plays axis pedals and has a drop clutch on the hi hat

  • @alexhughes117 yes I can see the drop clutch but at 2:14 the left foot engages the Cobra Clutch so it's tightly closed. In this video there are Sonor Giant Step pedals.

  • @drumsetdemon

    Oh, hey Gavin :-)

  • @miniatureface it's a Tama Cobra Clutch

  • ya cobra clutch look at 2:13 he presses it down with his foot

  • only a few drummers now at this stage of my playing life that really motivate me to play on....this guy is one of them. Absolute class imo!!

  • 2:14 to end

    Jizzed my pants

  • jizzed my pants through the whole thing

  • did the same

  • @miniatureface jazzed my pants* you mean

  • 1:14 to end

    i jizzed my pants

  • Gavin's my absolute drums inspiration, up there w Vinnie C and Steve Smith!

  • Nicely done.....

  • Pure genius. Such tasty double bass patterns, 2:24-2:34.Amazing

  • Gavin is THE best drummer out there, no doubt.

  • Most drummers of his skill level seem to me to have ridiculous technique tricks that I can't even image being able to do, let alone inventing. For some reason though, his technique is very straightforward, and looks like what my technique would probably look like if mine was really good. Generally, I hold my sticks with a similar grip and at a similar angle. Now I just need to get good at it.

  • actually Gavin have said in a interview (i don't remember what interview that was) that he had realised that he don't want to learn only techinques. he realised that after he had played like 3 to 4 hours similar patterns again and again. he said it's more important have the feeling, that even guy who don't know anything about drumming can enjoy it.

so keep on your style :)

  • I think owning the dvd is one thing - ripping off the sound track and posting it up for free is another. It's interesting to me that you think that's OK.

  • hehe ok. thank you any ways:)

  • i have to know where i can find this song. Someone please telle me:)

  • This guy sucks...

    lol, i love him xP

  • E' lui il miglior batterista del momento

  • Anyone have any idea as to where this song can be found?

  • wow!!!
