I absolutely love this song. I turn it on when I am sad especially. I am 37 yrs old. I told my dad about a year ago that if I die I want this song to be played at my funeral. He about choked.... haha I don't know if because it's a strange song to request for a funeral of if because he didn't even know that I was familiar with this song. Whatever, I love it and have since I was a child and heard it on a record.
@ethelmae43 Hey ethel, my brother loved to sing this and it cracked me up! It takes a real voice and lil 'sis loved to hear him hit all the notes! and make those sounds!!!! love it!! NUTHIN like it!
I cannot BEGIN to tell you how much I love this version; it's the first I've found in YEARS that sounds like our college crew used to sing it. . . a Boomer Blast! Thank you SO much for uploading!
the older people that listened to this stuff as a kid turned out just dandy, but when our kids are listening to blondes with eating disorders and split personalities (hannah montana) who dress like whores, the world is going to be in trouble when they run it =) god save us all
So does he say, "throw the fuck fuck bucket down?" He certainly does in their reunion rendition of this song, recorded recently (do a youtube search) Fucking great tune, great guitar.
That was absolutely great! I amazed everyday about the great videos on youtube. My wife got the TV on HGTV all day but I"m happy as a clam sitting here at the computer with the headphones on watching youtube.
Ya'll who've met a southern mule (gray, white muzzle, stubborn as all get out), will dance around to this rendition of Mule Skinner Blues; meanwhile those poh transplanted souls such as I to California can only recall these amazin' memories! Hey, where's that li'l water boy...and his Nehi soda????????
GREAT SONG! everytime i hear this song i ALWAYS think about the 1971 nfc and superbowl VI champion DALLAS COWBOYS and the 1971 southwest (swc) conference champion and 1972 cotton bowl champion TEXAS LONGHORNS! RIDE 'EM COWBOYS!! HOOK 'EM HORNS!!!
From the first time I heard when it was brand new 'til today, I still laugh my a** off and will never stop listening to this song. Great stuff! Cha, Cha, Cha...
@toploadertele Mules were stubborn, and in the old days, some men were especially good at controlling them or prodding them on. Mule teams were used to haul goods instead of horses because they had better footing on difficult mountainous trails.
@toploadertele Mules were stubborn, and in the old days, some men were especially good at controlling them or prodding them on. Mule teams were used to haul goods instead of horses because they had better footing on difficult mountainous trails.
The particular reference in this song, is the muyle teams which pulled ore wagons in the mining trails. The fendermen was so named by themselves, after the fender sponsored equipment they played. fender guitars and amps. They were a duo.
@governorsid1 They got the best traits from their parents (horse/donkey hybrid). They're less likely to step in holes, can get by on less than ideal fodder. People made the mistake of facing them and trying to get them to move forward - a sure way to make an equine stop in their tracks. lol
I love this song it takes me back to when I was a little kid.
My uncle and dad used to play this song together around the house when I was a kid.
They would sit in the living room playing the song on their fenders and they where so good, I thought this was my dad and uncle playing until I was 8.
Phil Humphrey & Jim Sundquist sure knew how to make Fendercasters sing! Suprisingly this was not a no.1 hit. Their one and only hit charted 5/23/60 and peaked at no.5 on the Billboard chart and stayed on the list 18 weeks. I used to get all kinds of requests for this on Classic Weekends when I was a DJ!
this is the hands down the funniest fucking song I have ever heard. as soon as he started yelpin' right after "good mornin' captaiinnn good mornin' to you..." I fucking died of laughter and fell out of my chair... true story.
My dad grew up in hard times Mississippi. We would travel from Texas to Jackson to see the kin. All eight of us in a Ford Falcon. He would sing Hank Williams songs for us but the real treat was always the Muleskinner Blues. Dad, you were a big man!
The only other version I like of this is Stompin' Tom Connors, but I grew up on this one and surprisingly, I can still belt this mother out like no tomorrow! Gotta love it and the memories in conjures up.
Oh the memories !, my best mate had this Top Rank single back in 1960, and we played it to death on his Emerson portable record player after school. The raw edge to the sound , that magical throbin' bass line have stayed with me 50 years, it still sends a tingle down my spine !.
Wow does this take me back way back! I was a little girl and this was my brothers record! Now I am hitting the big 60 ina week and my brother has been gone 5 yrs! AAhh memories. Thank you for posting!
No it seriously does not get any better than this. We who were electrified by the emerging rock all around us in the late '50s were more electrified by this than anything ever before. Try and imagine - no one had ever heard electric guitars doing those things before - and they've never been done better - and then the banjo for ultimate contrast - and no one has ever been so HEARTY and lavishly outrageous and all with perfect authority - the ultimate meaning of rock & roll.
@Maginel73 Really? That's what I originally thought - that someone does an incredible job of imitating a banjo on a guitar - to set that awesome effect of contrast with the new sounds only electrics guitars could make. Then, many years later and many years ago, I was told otherwise by someone who knew more than I do. These days it's easy to find out everything for sure. Thanks.
@ldybugg05 How right you are ladybugg. This song brings back memories of a fishing trip to Lake Huron with my dad and a couple of friends. Since it was played quite a bit on the radio, there was LOTS of laughter in the car. Absolutely priceless!
Throughout all of my life this mysterious, but catchy tune would show on the radio every 5 yrs. or so. I was glad to finally know the name of the song and who did it, or else I would have been scrounging info at record stores just to find out. I was also amazed to know that this only consisted of two guitars and was recording in a house garage.
