I am so tired of hearing this rendition of the abdication: for the woman he loved? Hogwash. History has falsely heaped blame on Wallis. She & Edward VIII were supporters of Hitler, Mussolini, & Franco, before and after war was declared; he betrayed British secrets to them, before & after war was declared. He was an embarrassment to the Establishment, a threat to Old Guard (which FDR handily wiped away w/ the Lend-Lease Act), & a security risk who refused to tow the line: had to be got rid of.
The duke and duchess of Windsor shouldn't have been sent into exile, but into prison! What a treason! What a dishonour and ignominy for the Crown and the entire Royal Family! What an infamy towards the British People! They even passed war secrets to the nazis! King George VI should have had them sentenced! OUTRAGEOUS, these two "Windsors", God bless their souls!

Imagine if he had remained king. I truly believe his heart was in the right place. England may have continued to appease Hitler. There would have been subsequently no blasphemous war between England and Germany. Hitler would have remained Fuhrer. The Third Reich could have remained and prospered for a much longer period of time. We can only dream of how history could have turned out differently if certain events had not taken place.
@whpriol1 Thankfully I do not have to imagine what it would have been like if Edward 8th (David) had remained on the throne - the leaders of Britain and the Commonwealth Countries wisely made sure that he did not. We can not change the past but we can alter the future - so if we dream - perhaps our dreams should be about making this world a better place for our children - and putting a little effort into doing so. No doubt history unfolded as it was meant to. George 6th was an excellent king!
In '36- the Gov. appeased Hitler & self-disarmed. Churchill said Hitler would attack, and was called a War Monger. Hopeless situation for disarmed England! -Did E. abdicate and fake a roll to position himself to mitigate harsh subjugation of England in future? In ‘40, did his words & dangerous wandering from Paris to Provence to Portugal, offer himself as “bait”, hoping to delay Hitler’s invasion past summer & radar setup? (Hitler did delay bombing) --Did Edward’s desperate acts save Briton?
Better that his throne be given up to his brother, so that England would not become a satellite of Hitler's empire. Edward was a big fan of the German dictator, and it would have been a tragedy for the entire nation if he had remained a king under the spell of England's enemy. The commoner marriage was just a pretext to get him out. I hope a similar good reason will be found to pass up Charles for king when the time comes.

Odd, I have a Coronation Cup for HM King Edward VIII. I saw this docu when it was first shown. The Duke of Essex has turned out all right. Probably the best of the litter. It's a shame he shan't be King.
@jamal49 You mean the Earl of Essex? He's a bit shabby too (gimmics to make money). The only one who's decent is Princess Anne. It's time actually that the law is changed. Either primogeniture with males and females having equal right of succession in their order; or, let the monarch choose his or her successor.
@LadyLisa513 I video taped it off of Television but it was called Edward On Edward. Prince Edward talking about his great uncle King Edward 8th (the Duke of Windsor) - I don't think it was a successful defense of the Duke of Windsor but it was interesting - I have never seen it on a DVD.
