  • The process is polymers

  • i did this at my daughters school!!! it was so fun lol

  • is this process called crystallization

  • Boiling water can hold more dissolved solids than cold water, so when you add the borax to the boiling water, it becomes super saturated (it holds more borax that it could in it's natural state). As it cools, the water can't hold as much dissolved borax anymore, so it crystallizes on the pipe cleaner.

  • This channel isnt the same as it used to :(

  • @ilovekars Is there a certain experiment you would like to see? Our new channel on YouTube called The Spangler Effect has more behind the scenes footage as well.

  • @SteveSpanglerScience Can you do gummy bear in potassium chlorate?

  • I think it's just a reaction the pipe cleaner gets to the borax so by my calculations the pipe cleaner absorbs the borax, food coloring, and water!

  • @Kleo3392 The borax crystallizes onto the pipe cleaner

  • I can do the same thing with a marker

  • I did this in first grade, my star is hanging in my room to this day.

  • Awesome, science at its coolest!

  • what if you dipped a snorlax into some borax?

  • Same thing that happen's with Rock Candy.

  • What happens if you use cold water instead?

  • So what exactly is the purpose of this experiment?

  • aw cute

  • Why use borax when the same can be done with sugar? Nontoxic too!

  • @SuperBamaslim Sugar will attract ants...

  • @SuperBamaslim then you can eat all of the snowflakes after you don't need them :D

  • I want to do this!

  • i did mine with alum but not sure if i added to much water will this affect if the crystals will form plz reply soon thankz:)

  • I'm going to make yellow stars

  • Use sugar :D!!!! :3 A bit slower to form nice crystals but a lot tastier than Borax ;3

  • Borax is used for so much awesome stuff. It should become a science material, Not a cleaner!

  • lol cool ornament

  • Reminds me of paper mario with the name crystal star :)

  • i do thus with sugar :L

  • @greendayninjalicker ants lulz

  • Music is so annoying

    but keep it it's kewl

  • Crystlization! ;)

  • I did this with my sister, but with sugar so you could eat it :D!

  • when the borax melts it looks for something to condensate on an it turns solid and cristalizes

  • Can u buy borax at Walmart?

  • @tutis1126 yes

  • can i just use a plastic cup unstead of a glass jar?

  • @LOLZProductions123 boiling water would melt it

  • I've wanted to make a copper sulfate crystals maybe this oughta do it!

  • science.... I see what you did there!!

  • Ofcourse we could always just use sugar instead of borax

  • WHERE DOU YOU BUY IT

  • this looks like rock candy...

  • @RebuildReach except that borax is basically poison

  • @RebuildReach Then you should eat it.

  • eyeee dat be it

  • Where could i get a pipe cleaner?

  • @DisneyForever2025 craft stores

  • we did this in chemistry class yesterday ^_^

  • Its the same as rock candy!

  • Instad of putting borax you can use sugar.Yummy!

  • Borax is like a cleaner like laundry detergent you can almost find it anywhere that sells laundry detergent

  • Made this in science so cool

  • can u eat it?

    heehee looks like sugar crystal

  • i live in the UK and we dont have borax. does anything else work the same way?

  • @Cessie983 u can get borax at boots i get it regularly

  • @Cessie983 Sugar! Just use more of it and wait longer

  • What is a "pipe cleaner" and where can I get it ?

  • Wd e did this in science!

  • Awesome! 4 down.. 55 more to go!

    Wait what? Christmas is over?

  • cool

  • We used to make rock candy the same way, but obviously not with Borax...

  • @TheHevquip borax candy, yum

  • Its funny how all your motions are mechanical like.. LOL

  • Can u eat it?

  • what is borax ?? where can i buy it??

  • @JoenelEdward0429 Just use sugar or salt. Works just as well.

  • I'm pretty sure borax is like a powder solution for washing clothes or something like that. So no it's not edible.

  • We did this in science class

  • When it said borax I thought of borat

  • nice ...

  • What the heck is borax?

  • @BROTHA891 borax is a cleaner sold in a cardboard box at many supermarkets etc. its a white powdery substance used for adding to laundry detergent , or mixed with water in a spray bottle to clean surfaces and mildew. it has many other uses like for washing out eyes when infected even killing insects costs about $5.00 for a 4lb box- 20 mule team brand is the most commonly used to make crystals.

  • Borax makes flames green.

  • Yes you can eat it, I have

  • nice color for the borax covered snowflake. LOVE IT!!!

  • Is it eatable

  • i will make snowflakes shape meatball from borax!!!! hahaha!!!!! lol

  • What is borax?

  • Is it edible?

  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • You can do it with sugar, too. I saw it on a craft show called fingertips.

    :D

  • Awesome

  • Can you eat this?? because I'm going to ....

  • @AStaRLuV if you replace the borax with sugar its rock candy

  • @AStaRLuV not really recommended

  • @AStaRLuV If you do it with sugar, yes. It is more commonly known as rock candy.

  • @AStaRLuV borax is poisonous when consumed. I suggest either sugar or if you really like that sort of thing, salt.

  • 400 is the lucky number. For this video.

  • The way you start your videos by opening your glasses makes you stand out from other people's video. Also makes me laugh for some reason....thank you.

  • happy 400th video

  • we did this at school last week

  • heating water expands the water molecules causing more room for borax. the borax becomes saturated with the water. As the water cools the borax clings on the pipe-cleaner and forms crystals

  • happy 400th video

  • happy 400th video

  • Happy 400th video

  • Wwwwoooooowwww

  • 400th video

  • What is Borax? I'm from Brazil!

  • Will it work the same if I let it sit for only a couple hours during the day?

  • Is it because borax is like sugar? It undergoes crystallization to form crystal like substance...

  • @june1395 sugar, for ever cup water. Two cups sugar, the reaction will take a week+ though. (its rock candy) but borax is about $4 at Walmart...

  • The borax dissolves in the hot water because higher temperatures yield better chemical reactions. As the solution cools overnight, the dissolved borax recrystalizes and sticks to the star

  • it looks like rock candy.

  • does it only work with borax?? or can i use any substitute??

  • Thank you for this.....

  • How long does it stay that way? What I mean is, can I keep it as a permanent decoration or will it eventually start breaking apart?

  • @ManicRaider will you drop it or put something on it

  • @ManicRaider i made one in science class like a month ago and it is still the exact same. it will stay like that if you don't break off the pieces.

  • @ManicRaider I once made a copper sulfate crystal in school. Same method, dissolving it in hot water and wait for the crystal to grow. We used some hairspray and put a thin layer of it on the top so that air humidity has no chance to destroy the crystal. That should work here too. If handled with care it shouldn't brake.

Can't tell how solid this is though.

  • @ManicRaider Nawh I've had mine for a long time.. It hasn't started yet.

  • @ManicRaider if you dont throw it around! yes! i made one in our school lab and im in seventh grade and it takes a day for the crystal to be fully ready! you have to leave it in the container from the time you put it in until the next day.

  • @ManicRaider i made 1 of these and it has survived 2 years so far

  • @ManicRaider its permanent i have one that i made 1 year ago

  • Dear Santa...

  • same concept as rock candy.

  • oh thats cool!!!

  • Borax is toxic, so , be careful! :)

  • I think i'll enjoy this as a snack.

  • wow !! very nice

  • Ok, that was so cool! TFS!

  • i love the do de do song

  • what happens if u put youre finger in the borax thingy?

  • Assisted nucleation. The hot water makes the borax molecules vibrate and break any attractive force between molecules thereby dissolving them into the water. As the solution cools the molecules within the pipe-cleaner fronds get knocked about less by one another, cool quicker, stick to the pipe-cleaner and other molecules more readily, and become the seeds for other molecules strong enough to stick with the group to form the crystal.

  • @neuraxon77 thnx for the explanation, i really was wondering how

  • You that's awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it does look sweet.

  • In my country.. there's no such thing as a "borax".. is there any substitute that i can use?? ive been dying to do this experiment 2 years ago. help me.

  • i remember doing this in grade 2. IT WAS SO FUN!!!

  • Step 3 rhymes.

  • Will it melt or decompose or can you keep it forever? Is it dangerous to touch?

  • When i did that in Science Class it took us about a week for the crystals to appear

  • It spells science wow!!!

  • Will it work with sugar?

  • does it ever melt?

  • What a neat idea. : )

  • Dude that is awesome

  • @boris417 would you eat borax? I know I wouldn't.

  • But will it blend?

  • Why are people asking if you can eat it? Do you always have to shove things into your piehole?

  • lol everybody always asks if u can eat it

  • OMG we just did that in science class except we covered the top in foil which made the crystals grow larger and instead of a star i made a Christmas tree

  • does it blend?

  • OMG we just did that in science class except we covered the top in foil which made the crystals grow larger and instead of a star i made a Christmas tree

  • I <3 Borax

  • your arms ar too sexy and hot!!!

  • Can you eat it?

  • Will it blend?

  • Can u show how to make those sugar crystal thingys that u can eat??

  • I am going to do this for my science project

  • can i smoke it?

  • cool

  • cccoooollll :)

  • u cant eat it unless u like borax. as the water cools and evaporates the borox clings to eneything that it can hold on 2 there for crystals are formed

  • did this in class today!!!!

  • Now do something with crystal sugar!

  • now you should do something with crystal sugar

  • It happens because Chuck Norris said so.

  • awesome ~!

  • cool.

  • Uhhhh... step 8 should come before step 7 because how are you supposto measure the 'cups' of water once its already poured it into the jar?

  • @CameronTheCool if you know the size of the jar, you'll know how many cups it takes to fill it. :-)

  • @CameronTheCool if you do 8 before 7 then the food coloring will stay at the bottom

  • @CameronTheCool i think he meant per cups as in bowls, jars, pots, etc

  • @CameronTheCool um hon you measure the water before you put it in the jar. this one looks like a pint jar anyway which would equal to 2 cups

  • @CameronTheCool no he adds and measured the water the he makes the substance

  • @CameronTheCool step 7 is to see if everything is working correctly so you don't have to remake your star

  • So kewl. Gotta do that.

  • is it edible?

  • Can you make rock candy

  • i had to do this for a science experiment at school when i was in 6th grade but it is better if you use some sort of metal instead of plastic

  • it happens thanks to chuck norris

  • The water causes the borax to crystallize.

    Am I partially correct?

  • Why not use sugar? It looks too tasty not to eat D:

  • it wont melt! read the description guys!

  • can it be a ordamint???

  • I hope that's edible because I made one of those stars before and my dog ate it.
