I don't get it. The first half of each mp3 is silent. That would have been better at the end of a file so that the pitch sounds when you start to play an mp3. And then worst of all... you don't let the note play out when it sounds. You immediately start describing the note, and your voice is too loud in comparison. I will definitely be dumping the set of mp3. There is no way I can relax think about the pitch when I know you will start talking the moment a note sounds. Nice idea, poor execution.
I feel sorry for writing what I did. Not sure why I felt the need. I guess I really did like your idea, and was disappointed... oh yeah and I had just spent 20 minutes or more searching everywhere online for the free application "Pitch Coach" for Mac OSX, and finding that it had been removed and obliterated.
Anyways, let me summarize again, and just leave it at "Nice idea..." :-)
To all the naysayers regarding absolute pitch being an innate ability that one must be born with:
Take a skill that you currently have and ask yourself, could I always do this, or did I have to work at it? You may have an inclination toward a certain activity... But here's the kicker... If you have activities that you enjoy, you will be more inclined to spend time on said activity, and thus further increase your skill level at it.
Let me enlightened all of you! You are BORN with Perfect pitch! Usually its the very smart people who have it. But you can also learn it! You can never quite get perfect pitch but you can get very close!
@MrLuy25 Depends which one you think I name second. You probably start counting from bottom. the closest line beneath the bass clef is the first one to me. Thanks though!
actually you can be born with an inherant ability to be able to distiinguish notes and pitch better than other ppl, but it can also be learned. the same way that you can have two people who are extraordinary pianist but one plays by ear and the other plays by reading from sheet music. i believe that all people are born with a nack for specific talents and skills, and those that werent born with a that specific skill can learn it.
controversial subject indeed. this is like ufo's, everybody that believes they come to earth say that there is strong evidence but that same evidence appears "weak" to those who don't believe that "strong" evidence. maybe this woks for some and not for others. documentaries say that it has to be developed early in childhood, which means that according to this method documentaries are arbitrary. the bottom line is always personal: how long till you give up if there isn't any progress?
Most parts of perfect pitch can be learned but a few parts you have to be born with the talent but even born with it may require some training to bring it out fully. Man did not invent sound just named and scaled it based on math. Sun light has frequencies but now we can measure them based on scales man have setup.
@BloodyScot99 yeah but since we made up the letters and scales you cant just be born with it . You have to know what scales and notes your talking about. Anyone can learn it
chlebiksmaslem is totally right. Its not innate in someone to have absolute pitch. Most often those who catch on quicker than others seem to be praised for "being born with a gift" It's bullshit... anyone can learn anything at an time in their life
No idea if this works in your sleep, but ive been listening to them and trying to guess for about an hour. im getting better already. im also using the color method with this. i try to relate pitches to colors. i can already recognized a C, D, F, A, and Bb. that is sing them without a reference pitch. But i do find it annoying that in some of the mp3s you say the name of the note too soon after hitting it. i try to envision the color and figure the note first, but you give the answer too fast.
SORRY but you cannot learn perfect pitch and relative pitch in your sleep! : ) you need to be AWAKE (oh yeah...), a great time to start is just after you wake up (from a good restful night sleep, stretch...ahhh,thats beter.).
Its a good idea though, it means I just let my subconcious do the work, IF ONLY that was true.
I'm gonna give it a shot (it's not like it takes too much effort! You're asleep while you do it!) but I've heard some people dismiss the liklihood of it working.
You cannot learn perfect pitch. You have it or you don't. You might be able to develop a very good relative pitch, almost as good as an absolute pitch, but not quite perfect.
@Criticalperspective2 That is based only on your current training and understanding. It has been proven by David Burgess time and time again that it can be developed alongside relative pitch.

@clarinutmaniac01 uhuh-.- studies show that only 1 in a 1000 people are born with it.
Its something that can be learned-.- check the definition of perfect pitch. You can Learn to be able to recognize a note in perfect pitch. Its a very simple concept (by concept i mean the thought of learning how) i dont see how anyone can say its not able to be learned!
i see a few people are fighting over whether you can or cannot be born with perfect pitch....... well YES you can.. no one knows that a C is a C or F# is F# at birth.. but some people can SEE SOUND like every time a C3 is played they see dark red (or whatever) and that happens every time with the same color... or smell or object.. its called synesthesia. and some people are just born with a very sensitive ear... the point is YES you can be born with perfect pitch.
So, I've got an idea. How about everyone learns from a program/this video/whatever might work while baked as fuck. I never forget the emotions I feel when I'm high! So, ear train and feel the emotions of all the notes.
@readygo242 haha, yeah, it might work cos i do hear differently when high. Also I notice i can improvise really well and come up with some bizarre melodies, but i also find it impossible to remember tunes.
Hey I have a question. Does every musician have perfect pitch or does only a few people have this? When I was young, I used to play around with the keyboard and now I memorize all the notes. Do I have perfect pitch and is it something great?
hah, in response to my last comment, this was exactly what i was looking for, thanks man, well done. I guess i should have watched the vid first. Thanks again for this though.
is there a program that just lets you identify individual notes, i have ear trainer but that starts you at intervals, how the hell can i hear an interval if i cant even hear one note.
I have perfect pitch, and there is no such thing as "learning" perfect pitch. It's a natural gift that can't be acquired unless you obtain that gift. There are only 1 in 10,000 people that have perfect pitch, so therefore, you can't "learn" to have perfect pitch; you have to be born with it.

@clarinutmaniac01 You were born with perfect pitch? When you were born you were already aware of the Western music notation system, 12 notes per octave and could tell if it was a C or an A, from 430 to 450 Hz? What a crock of.... Of course you ACQUIRE perfect pitch by practicing for it, just like you learn music to develop natural expression skills for it. As for being able to distinguish between say Ab and A, most people can do it too after working at it. 1 in 10,000? probably more like 90%.
@NickInMesa nah i get what clarins on about, like the names are irrelevant, itsjust the attention you pay to the notes that counts, like you knew what a shade of green is before you knew the name of it~ afterwards naming it doesn't change the fact its still that shade of green, that being said i reckon we can all tell it apart just that for most if becomes one of those thigns we stop paying attention to
@clarinutmaniac01 That is absolute nonsense. The Fact that any talent or skill resides in nature is proof that it can be developed. I never had perfect pitch and one day while doing my Perfect Pitch Exercises, Like Mozart in the Movie Amadaeus I could hear the notes and chords of a song in My Mind as if a Stereo a Group Was Live Right in Front of me. It was amazing, like something dormant turned on all by itself.
I have perfect pitch, and I know that you can't learn perfect pitch. It's impossible to learn it. You just have to be born with it. It's a natural gift that can't be acquired unless you have that gift. Only 1 in 10,000 people have the gift of perfect pitch according to numerous studies.
Thanks! i have problem when i tryed to listen 1st time the colours were very clear but i have been listening for a week now EVERYDAY ( with guitar), but i havent heard the colors after i did on the 1st time
Im not a musician. But I am a frustrated singer.. hehe. I want to improve my pitch memory, tell me more about this video, i really dont understand it..
@freezinghand This is a great help sir! My pitch memory is really improving. I can identify, F#, B and E with high accuracy. However, I REALLY wished you hit the piano keys repeatedly or sustain them more with a pedal. I dont like hearing the pitch only once after waiting for about 4 seconds. Its EXTREMELY helpful but if u made the notes drone more, Im sure it would help even more. THANK YOU so much for this nonetheless.
All music is theory, some people seem to be so terrible with music as if they're tone def but no one is "Borne" with perfect pitch. Since music is just theory it is something that you must learn. Just like anything some people practice more or learn quicker than others. Saying you're born with it is retarted no matter how adept to music you are.
completely disagree! Youngins that have perfect pitch, have to learn what the notes are... but most (about 90%) people who have it were definitely born with the gift. Like some people were born with the gift of musiq and some were not. Some are just naturally GOOD, and some have to practice to be good! Those who were born good have to practice as well, not saying that, I'm saying that basically those who weren't born with perfect pitch can develop relative pitch but that's about it in most cases
Ummm. Perfect pitch is part of your brain that haves to do with hearing being oversensitive. So yes some people are born with it. but you can also develop the oversensitivity of your brain.
ppl with good rp will hve trouble using this method.. =(
learning pp is about how you judge the quality in a pitch sound and i believe patient is the key (in almost everything).. even babies need at least few years to learn how to walk..
and for more information, i found out the mp3s u provided re v.useful to develop rp too, as long as you know how to spell the musical notation correctly (i.e. p4, m3, M2, etc.) :D
@BulletProofFilms normally you call it absolute hearing and relative hearing. The relative hearing is the one you can learn. The Perfect Pitch is something like "Photographic Memory". It's more of an Eidetic Memory, and the acquired Memory is just called good memory.
perfect pitch can not be "acquired" You are born with it or you are not. You are born "color blind" or you are not. You can not correct color blindness by watching a bunch of video slides flashing while you sleep. Man, people will believe the most crazy things.
@alexmcginness since when does being blind have to do witch recognizing a pitch? it's like learning the names of the colors of the rainbow, you don't have to be born with knowing them
@Guitarnoob66 True but you have to be born with the ability to distinguish the difference between colors just like kids born with PP can distinguish between notes. I am not able to distinguish between certain colors. I can not "learn" to overcome this born with disability anymore than someone "not born with" PP can over come that disability by using some course. PP is something you are either born with or you are not. It can not be learned period. You can improve relative pitch but PP no way.
...Actually no one is ever born with the absolute pitch. Everyone has to learn, even children. During the early stages of childhood the brain finds it much easier to develop pitch recognition (before the age of 5). If you were not exposed to enough musical stimuli before this age acquiring pitch recognition becomes significantly harder but is still very much a possibility for adults.
@chlebiksmaslem The pitch of notation is a statement that vibrations can be recognized by using the system of pitch. We can all develop perfect pitch. It is basically colours of sound, like an artist uses different shades for different effects. Quite strong to call someone a dumbass with such certitude that you are totally correct, that is the same as you saying pitch was just invented by man and so you are using your thoughts to tell us that we can't be born with it etc. Dear me.
But did you know that there are diferent "hair cells" in the coclea, inside the inner ear, that lead us to listne certain tones. The receivers og higher notes are located in the outer area and get dissolved over the years (thats why people get deaf from higher tones qhen they get old). If you get in contact with the notes when youra a child and youre still developing, those specific hair cells get stimulated and youre able to recall the tone.
you're kind of right, I think more like born with the ability to acquire it without much work. That is why some musicians discover with no ear training that they do have this Great ability.
The down side? your music or favourite songs will never sound the SAME, if not completely irritating and actually HURTFUL to your ears i.e. producing actual physical PAIN, now it might be different for you, so I do not want to discourage you in finding out whether you have it. Thanks.
@marquez918 What we call the pitch, however is, of course, man made. We would rely simply on memory to properly label it. There is still a lot of unawareness about it's true methods. The theory right now is that if labeling pitches is incumbent upon memory, and the human mind acquires information better by repetition, listening to the names of pitches with them played should produce what we call perfect pitch.
@marquez918 but man is gifted with the five senses, of one is hearing. what we perceive of this world is only allowed through our senses and therefore impossible for us to generalize. thus, all we do, everything we are, is only determined by thought. we might've heard pitches, but it's our brains that tell us what it is - so lets fool our brains.
Perfect pitch is not genetic, its learning to sense or "see" the vibrations in the tones. The tone resonates at a certain frequency that induces a colour "feeling" that you assign to the tone.
you have to be born with the genes that enable you to have perfect pitch, without those you're effed. obviously not everybody born with the genetics for it will have it, because they weren't trained... the point is that it still takes training despite the fact that you were born with the ability.
You can gain perfect pitch by retraining your hear to hear the sonic color of each note. You can also learn relative pitch and together have a great awareness of music. your right you can't cure colorblindness because you are born that way but we are not born to know red is red we learn it in school and you can learn E is E the same way just practice. Thats what I did, not through this guy but someone else. So try whatever works for you instead of speaking about what you have not tried.
he is correct, perfect pitch cannot be acquired late in life. however, you CAN acquire RELATIVE pitch which is pretty close, usually within one half step.
I will try your method. I dream of having perfect pitch for quite a long time. My brother has it when he was at about age of 3. However, I started my music training at age of 5, I do not have it. People used to believe that its a genetic thing.
Hopefully, someday I will give you the positive result .... but I doubt it. Let's cross our fingers that it will work.
I don't think you're born with perfect pitch, you develop it when you learn music at a young age (5-7) but I definitely don't think that perfect pitch is inherited.. none of my parents have perfect pitch but I do for some reason
@prothiever I agree i think it's just all through relations. The more you relate the notes with emotions/pictures/ideas/things you start to recgonize. It's like opening your ears. I'm starting to experience with this.
There are 12 "personalities" on the piano (because of 12 keys in an octave). If you want to improve/develop pitch recognition (I hate the term "perfect" because one is to recognize a pitch range, so it's not perfect) work with the middle two octaves first because the notes there are easier to distinguish. A Bb sounds the same anywhere, so remember 12 keys instead of 88. I hope this helps a little at least.
I have found it easier to learn the perfect pitch of one note ("C") and just learn your intervals. I can walk around and just randomly sing a "C" and then listen to a piece of music to learn the key, and then from there i'm able to pick out all the other notes. It's being able to do it when someone is playing random notes in different octaves that's where the hardcore practice comes in. That's why I found it help to learn the "C" in all octaves. Makes it a little easier.
jaja, I created mp3 just like yours some years ago. I used to hear them everywhere. People thouht I was crazy. I did it for several months but I didn't develope the perfect pitch. Anyway I don't want to disencourage anywone. It's a good training and I did make some progress. I'm going to start it again, this time with your files. Thanks for sharing this!
People this realy Worrkss...I started this a year to be exact, and now i have a Perfect pitcchh...,,Its just a matter of timee,,,,Your ears get used to the soundss,,,,,Try itt ,,,,.,It workss
Well see, a person can speak a maximum of 60 words per minute, read a little more than that, and think about 400 words per minute. The subconscious can go hundreds of times faster than that. So if a person goes to sleep thinking about developing ear training, while listening to music, it will help him as his brain will put together the sound input, and his continuing train of thought.
I use this method when I have problems to fix the next day. I just think about it, and I have an answer later.
I don't know whether memory drills and visualizing work - it seems to me that just listening to the note is all it takes. I have perfect pitch and can tell you categorically that all the information which you need is in the note (what is in a note? well, for starters, a whole lot more than just "the note" itself - there are many sounds which colour notes. I can't say whether the information I myself hear is what others hear (perhaps it is just a psychological or psycho-acoustical phenominon).
@ concertobub. I agree with you. People seem to make this a lot harder than it should be. As simple as this may sound, people just need to listen reallllllly closely to the notes. Once they get better, it will become easier to hear which note it is.
You know, I've heard that some musicians who tuned their own intruments (tuned to A) know the pitch A. They can sing it out of nowhere, but they didn't have that natural ability.
I think it's a matter of time and repetition. Also, if you just get one note, you can use your relative pitch to build off of it, and your note recognition will become faster with practice.
I wasn't 'born' with perfect pitch, I developed it from relative pitch while in an orchestra, from that A as the top string on my cello. I don't think it can be taught reliably; it's more of a self-taught thing and a discovery. Like you say, it's a matter of time.
Thank You ! It is very nice, that someone is trying to help others who wish to learn perfect pitch on their own. And for free! I've been doing research on the internet for something like this, and you're the best! With your mp3s its fun to learn, although im a violinist and czech. Works very good for me ! Progress guaranteed. Recommendation for others !
Another suggestion - create another volume of mp3s that consist of harmonics (i.e. chords and such). People who scream/growl for bands can benefit greatly from using harmonics as it gives them a more definitive and unique sound. Good job though :)
Thanks for sharing those files! I play randomly and try to guess each note. I consistently guess a half-step below or above. Perhaps I can develop a system out of that ;)
Thank you for these mp3's. I'm finding them helpful.
It is amazing the number of people who don't read the info and then need ask where to get these files. You were perfectly clear in the info comments. I guess lots of people are not aware of the "more info" button.
I have a question. Why is there 14 seconds of silence and only 6 seconds of tone and words in these recordings. For me it seems to slow down training.
The reason I separated them like that is because the program I used to split the tracks does not allow me to be precise so I had to add extra space to make sure it would not cut in the middle of some thing. Sorry! and thank you for trying it!
I have my grade 5 exam in a couple of weeks and my sight-reading is still stuck on a grade 3 standard; Im practicing like crazy!! I will give these files a try - i will certainly let you know how it goes. By the way i love your composition - could you make that available also?
I just downloaded them - you just go to the More Info and click one of his links which takes you to Rapid Share - Click the FREE download button and wait for clock timer to click down to zero seconds and it gives you an access code. Type access code in box and download for free to desktop. Unzip by right clicking and choose "Extract All..."
thanks, its on my ipod now. I'll let you know if it helps me. You should know that I've already been doing some perfect pitch training for 6 months now, and I think I'm really close to getting it.
great! Good job on making it clear for the beginners!

NickInMesa 1 year ago
@NickInMesa nah i get what clarins on about, like the names are irrelevant, itsjust the attention you pay to the notes that counts, like you knew what a shade of green is before you knew the name of it~ afterwards naming it doesn't change the fact its still that shade of green, that being said i reckon we can all tell it apart just that for most if becomes one of those thigns we stop paying attention to
SousukePanic 1 year ago
@clarinutmaniac01 That is absolute nonsense. The Fact that any talent or skill resides in nature is proof that it can be developed. I never had perfect pitch and one day while doing my Perfect Pitch Exercises, Like Mozart in the Movie Amadaeus I could hear the notes and chords of a song in My Mind as if a Stereo a Group Was Live Right in Front of me. It was amazing, like something dormant turned on all by itself.

wild20 1 year ago
o good way i find to baby step your way into memorizing pitch tones is to chose a tone.. and associate it with a short lick IN that tonal Key..
For example. C is strongly associated with Mozart's Sonata. 16, 1st movement, allegro...
"Just the first 6 notes"
Or... E for example... is The first few Notes of Beethoven's "fur elise"...
The hard part is finding those 12 licks...
And then comes memorizing them in all their octave forms... It's tough but its worth it in the end.

Saying you're born with it is retarted no matter how adept to music you are.
istillion 2 years ago
completely disagree!
BHMinstrel 2 years ago
How do you explain the other 10%?
danieltv123 2 years ago
Ummm. Perfect pitch is part of your brain that haves to do with hearing being oversensitive. So yes some people are born with it. but you can also develop the oversensitivity of your brain.

learning pp is about how you judge the quality in a pitch sound and i believe patient is the key (in almost everything).. even babies need at least few years to learn how to walk..
and for more information, i found out the mp3s u provided re v.useful to develop rp too, as long as you know how to spell the musical notation correctly (i.e. p4, m3, M2, etc.) :D

Actually, perfect pitch CAN be acquired. My music teacher acquired perfect pitch.
BulletProofFilms 2 years ago 22
@BulletProofFilms normally you call it absolute hearing and relative hearing. The relative hearing is the one you can learn. The Perfect Pitch is something like "Photographic Memory". It's more of an Eidetic Memory, and the acquired Memory is just called good memory.
Sanitoeter666 1 year ago
@BulletProofFilms that is what makes me believe in perfect pitch :)
psxworld101 7 months ago
perfect pitch can not be "acquired" You are born with it or you are not. You are born "color blind" or you are not. You can not correct color blindness by watching a bunch of video slides flashing while you sleep. Man, people will believe the most crazy things.
alexmcginness 2 years ago
@alexmcginness since when does being blind have to do witch recognizing a pitch? it's like learning the names of the colors of the rainbow, you don't have to be born with knowing them
Guitarnoob66 2 years ago 2
@Guitarnoob66 True but you have to be born with the ability to distinguish the difference between colors just like kids born with PP can distinguish between notes. I am not able to distinguish between certain colors. I can not "learn" to overcome this born with disability anymore than someone "not born with" PP can over come that disability by using some course. PP is something you are either born with or you are not. It can not be learned period. You can improve relative pitch but PP no way.
alexmcginness 2 years ago
@alexmcginness Now the majority says the Earth is round.. not flat.. =(
luffy3 2 years ago
...Actually no one is ever born with the absolute pitch. Everyone has to learn, even children. During the early stages of childhood the brain finds it much easier to develop pitch recognition (before the age of 5). If you were not exposed to enough musical stimuli before this age acquiring pitch recognition becomes significantly harder but is still very much a possibility for adults.
darkhorse1985 2 years ago 2
you dumbass, the pitch of each note was thought of by man, it isn't essentiall, you can't be born with it.
chlebiksmaslem 2 years ago 19
@chlebiksmaslem The pitch of notation is a statement that vibrations can be recognized by using the system of pitch. We can all develop perfect pitch. It is basically colours of sound, like an artist uses different shades for different effects. Quite strong to call someone a dumbass with such certitude that you are totally correct, that is the same as you saying pitch was just invented by man and so you are using your thoughts to tell us that we can't be born with it etc. Dear me.
OHollowTimes 1 year ago
@chlebiksmaslem ya you can. my dad was born with perfect pitch.
Alecoz2 1 year ago
@chlebiksmaslem thats so true
Homeboyyyyy 1 year ago
@chlebiksmaslem you are totally correct.
But did you know that there are diferent "hair cells" in the coclea, inside the inner ear, that lead us to listne certain tones. The receivers og higher notes are located in the outer area and get dissolved over the years (thats why people get deaf from higher tones qhen they get old). If you get in contact with the notes when youra a child and youre still developing, those specific hair cells get stimulated and youre able to recall the tone.
davidalpiano 1 year ago
@chlebiksmaslem
you're kind of right, I think more like born with the ability to acquire it without much work.
Thanks.
OCUBOX 1 year ago
@chlebiksmaslem THE PITCH OF A NOTE IS NOT A THOUGHT. IT IS A SOUND. THE NAME OF THE NOTE WAS MADE BY MAN. BUT THE SOUND HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE.
marquez918 1 year ago 6
@marquez918 What we call the pitch, however is, of course, man made. We would rely simply on memory to properly label it. There is still a lot of unawareness about it's true methods. The theory right now is that if labeling pitches is incumbent upon memory, and the human mind acquires information better by repetition, listening to the names of pitches with them played should produce what we call perfect pitch.
Chitarinoymi 1 year ago
@marquez918 but man is gifted with the five senses, of one is hearing. what we perceive of this world is only allowed through our senses and therefore impossible for us to generalize. thus, all we do, everything we are, is only determined by thought. we might've heard pitches, but it's our brains that tell us what it is - so lets fool our brains.
naowx09 11 months ago
@chlebiksmaslem Hahaha! You completely contradicted yourself!!! If man thought of it, it was because it was innate! So you are born with it!
Marvinglz 5 months ago
@chlebiksmaslem What he means is that you can be born with an hear more sensitive to differences in frequency.
GBPpro 5 months ago
Perfect pitch is not genetic, its learning to sense or "see" the vibrations in the tones. The tone resonates at a certain frequency that induces a colour "feeling" that you assign to the tone.
larrydallas187 2 years ago
you have to be born with the genes that enable you to have perfect pitch, without those you're effed. obviously not everybody born with the genetics for it will have it, because they weren't trained... the point is that it still takes training despite the fact that you were born with the ability.
ashoema0 2 years ago
You can gain perfect pitch by retraining your hear to hear the sonic color of each note. You can also learn relative pitch and together have a great awareness of music. your right you can't cure colorblindness because you are born that way but we are not born to know red is red we learn it in school and you can learn E is E the same way just practice. Thats what I did, not through this guy but someone else. So try whatever works for you instead of speaking about what you have not tried.
floored2112 2 years ago
he is correct, perfect pitch cannot be acquired late in life. however, you CAN acquire RELATIVE pitch which is pretty close, usually within one half step.

I don't think you're born with perfect pitch, you develop it when you learn music at a young age (5-7) but I definitely don't think that perfect pitch is inherited.. none of my parents have perfect pitch but I do for some reason
prothiever 2 years ago 3
prove it.
niggerfuckshit 2 years ago
@prothiever I agree i think it's just all through relations. The more you relate the notes with emotions/pictures/ideas/things you start to recgonize. It's like opening your ears. I'm starting to experience with this.
readygo242 1 year ago
There are 12 "personalities" on the piano (because of 12 keys in an octave). If you want to improve/develop pitch recognition (I hate the term "perfect" because one is to recognize a pitch range, so it's not perfect) work with the middle two octaves first because the notes there are easier to distinguish. A Bb sounds the same anywhere, so remember 12 keys instead of 88. I hope this helps a little at least.
TwelfthRoot2 2 years ago
this is very cool, I am going to try it out... i had actually thought of doing this myself before but never bothered... now I'll use yours!

Makes it a little easier.
matrix86 2 years ago
the hard part with that is what if you have a song in B or C#... it will hard to find your C.
HailThyDrumKit 1 year ago
You can't learn perfect pitch. Perfect pitch is a natural gift. If you don't have it naturally, you can always develop a really good relative pitch.

I can only hear and sing Do without pitch reference. I do hope this will help me widen my ear-playing capabilities.
Franz4939 2 years ago
I don't know whether memory drills and visualizing work - it seems to me that just listening to the note is all it takes. I have perfect pitch and can tell you categorically that all the information which you need is in the note (what is in a note? well, for starters, a whole lot more than just "the note" itself - there are many sounds which colour notes. I can't say whether the information I myself hear is what others hear (perhaps it is just a psychological or psycho-acoustical phenominon).
concertobub 2 years ago
@ concertobub. I agree with you. People seem to make this a lot harder than it should be. As simple as this may sound, people just need to listen reallllllly closely to the notes. Once they get better, it will become easier to hear which note it is.

You know, I've heard that some musicians who tuned their own intruments (tuned to A) know the pitch A. They can sing it out of nowhere, but they didn't have that natural ability.
I think it's a matter of time and repetition. Also, if you just get one note, you can use your relative pitch to build off of it, and your note recognition will become faster with practice.
dirulovely 2 years ago
I wasn't 'born' with perfect pitch, I developed it from relative pitch while in an orchestra, from that A as the top string on my cello. I don't think it can be taught reliably; it's more of a self-taught thing and a discovery. Like you say, it's a matter of time.
