in 2001 when we first performed this dance as part of ROFG's interpretation of the legend of Durian, we watched and studied lots of video footages from Kuya Mon's research and archives, studying the correct body line, nuances of the subject, interviewing the locals, learning their music and how to play it, real costumes and accesories of the Bagobo's were used during the presentation..
I know what you mean, if so I think that everyone need to approach those might have miss intrepreted the dance and work on collboration in correcting it. I think we all can say so much, but yet nothing is being done about. Do you know anyone who has the knowledge to properly introduced the dance? I'd like to see their version. But also, being a native Pilipina and I still enjoy any Filipino traditional dance, regardless what tribe it is. I do value the beauty of where it came from :)
I think regardless of authenticity of the dance, we all should appreiate the contribution and effort of those who still bring the education to our children's hand that this is the tribal filipino culture.Regardless of what tribe it is. It's the importance of bringing some of the tradition left for everyone to be teach. It is a beautiful performance and effort.
I agree with you. I also understand that it is important to preserve the right traditions. I.e. if these dances are not correctly performed w/the correct musical accompaniment as well as the right moves then we practically destroy what was tradition. So we should do our best to preserve the proper dances/music/etc not just assume that it is traditional. Look at how they misinterpreted Pinoy history, esp pre-colonial history and the confusion its given the younger generation about being Pilipino.
i dont think the musical accompaniment is correct. heard bagobo agong ensemble and they don't sound like one. more like of a maranao or maguindanao sound..the footwork dont work for me as well....im not a bagobo but i saw the real dance in our town, magpet, cotabato, and it sure doesn't look it.
actually, it was a nice representation of the what so-called dance...authenticity sometimes are left behind due to theatrical reasons.. if im not mistaken, its name was Sugod-uno...im also a folk dancer and delightful about our ethnic groups...in our dance troupe, which is the sister company of ROFG... we first study the history of the dance(who, what, where, when and why it is danced) in this case... we are informed on how to properly execute the dance..
I don't see the bouncing steps of a bagobo rice planting dance. It looks like a combination of singkil and ifugao dances. I've see many bogobo dances in the past from real bagobos, so I can differentiate.
yung mga nag comment about authenticity why don't you dance and post it here in youtube so that we can see how you dance with perfect authenticity...tingnan natin kung kaya nyo bang sumayaw like the bagobo. peace...
I am of a Mandayan blood. technically, the performance is well done. but my question is, is this really a bagobo dance? it looks like a group of some ifugao dancers wearing a bagobo costume (not really bagobo). one more thing, why do they wore T'nalak, isn't it appropirate to wear Dagmay instead. The are not T'boli, they are bagobo. Sayang kay mga ining yang kamayo ihago sang pag sayaw. makawa nang gana kay itin.
well, these so called "folkdance workshops" in Manila are more often than not organized by people who have close affiliations with Bayanihan.so what would you expect?cultural shows/info that are zillion times removed from the original.
So you are relying on handouts given in National Folkdance Workshops at CCP Folk arts Theater?these workshops are the reason why Mindanao tribes are oftentimes misrepresented and their culture bastardized by "char"-eographers.
In the original TODAK or MIAMAS NENG OMMOY (that is the Bagobo name for this 'Rice cycle dance'), the male dancers would drill small holes using the pakupak poles and BEHIND them are the women dancers who SHOOT a few grains of rice to the drilled whole. Here, the dancers are face to face with the womwn dropping anywhere they please. Certainly the birds will eat the grains easily. The translation of the Todak to theater made that movement unrealistic and illogical. Needless sacrifice!
Please read the handout distributed during the 9th National Folk dance Workshop last 1993 when this dance was "presented". The resource Person? No less than Bagobo Datu Oscar Udang.
So you are relying on handouts given in National Folkdance Workshops at CCP Folk arts Theater?these workshops are the reason why Mindanao tribes are oftentimes misrepresented and their culture bastardized by "char"-eographers.
Are you a Bagobo yourself? The research (and resource) person was himeself a Bagobo datu: Datu Oscar Udang and his wife Bai Bonifacia Udang! Have you noticed the many variants of that word? Those were not given in the handout.
Wait... the Likha video here don't use the PAKUPAK, THE POLE WITH A NOISY CLAPPER!
...AND, BTW, who distinguishes as to who are the culture bastards, and who are not??? Is it you?
by the way, I am from Mindanao and a Bagobo. no need to educate me with the terms that you learned from your workshops.
nowadays anyone can claim that he/she is royalty to some tribe.you too, perhaps may claim you are some babaylan of an ancient tribe in Samar or whereever you are from.
I would like to add that theatre is stylized and created for a more theatrical performance. It is created to help tell a story (if it was hard for you to understand the concept of this piece obviously you need to research more yourself.) Just like Balley, it is choreographed differently from reality. Likha has come a long way and i give them thumbs up for all the effort they've put into their ensemble.
anybody knows that a Bagobo wears a white costume beaded blouse? what does a white blouse represents? I know red ones are for the higher class and blue ones are for the maganis. anybody knows the classification of color in the bagobo tribe? the green ones and the yellow ones are for the slaves. the mabaylan wears a decorative top with lots of manas, jewels, stones and metals. Can anyone correct this study? if this is right or wrong.
wow..what a performance..i am a lover of our folk dances. hope the big networks could show these programs as one of their specials so that children today would be taught how to appreciate our dances. it is for a fact that filipino dancers are graceful and artistic. keep up the good work. more power to all of you.
Maybe people...you should experience the cultural events here in Mindanao. And who is right and wrong. And also...dont underestimate Locals...we know better our culture and try to preserve not bastardize.
that is true...we need to preserve it...especially the dialects....we even teach our kids even if their studying in ateneo now and we used to bring them to our farm every weekends to know where they came from, meet the oldies...and practice our culture in any ways...
I know Ramon Obosan and even watched Bayanihan several times. I do appreciate their works but also people from the tribes are questioning if they are really representing them rightfully. And dont underestimate locals we know more of our culture than people who were just abroad. Does these dancers knows what the difference of wearing DAGMAY from TINALAK? Or wearing of the Tangkulo? or the designs of their dresses? Even how each tribes plays their music. Now were is the justice here!

Certainly different from the Bagobo dagmay "man or lizard motif" that is also used by their Mandaya relatives. Hay naku! Such nuances......

amp! your definitely correct! but i was born in Davao City home of the Lumads. What I saw from the video are combined footworks of Ifugao and Moro. There are several ways i guess to break down the authenticity of tribal steps or shall i say "contemporize" it but not combining footworks from two different tribe representing one tribe which is in other words "bastardation of culture". I hope this comment is constructive not destructive. Only means someone watching this group. :)
Not a bad performance... however the footsteps are not based on the traditional bagobo tribal steps. Ethnic dances are supposed to be nearest to the authentic. but i dont see any relevant tribal footwork.

well, you know the rice field became a football field after the harvest - Jerry Rice of the SF 49'ers
loves Bagobo Fried Rice which is very natural
and nutritious that's why he can out run and outwit anyone with running speed for a touchdown which is analogous to a 'harvest'
so to speak... Ha ... ha ... ha...ha...this was
how the sport of FootBall originated...
